Seoul Searching offers a unique perspective on Korean culture, life, and work, providing valuable information for Western expats looking to relocate to Korea and an engaging read for anyone curious about this dynamic nation and its people. In this enthralling narrative, the author shares how the idea for this book was born during an arduous twenty-six-mile hike along the Han River, a team-building event of the local firm he worked for that turned into an endurance test under unexpected snowfall. These moments of challenge and camaraderie were just one aspect of the author's deep exploration of Korean society.Drawing from over twenty years of experience in the asset management industry, including work in a Korean corporation, the author provides a rare insider's view of the intricacies of Korean corporate culture, hierarchy, and protocols. Unlike many other books about Korea, this author's firsthand knowledge of the corporate world sets this volume apart. This book, however, is not limited to the workplace; it delves into the rich tapestry of Korean culture and politics. Amongst other events and insights, the author's visits to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) and North Korea offer gripping accounts of encounters with history and geopolitics.Seoul Searching is an informative and entertaining resource that combines personal stories with facts and figures about Korea. The Korean Wave, or Hallyu, which began in neighboring Asian countries in 1997, has expanded to become a global phenomenon in the 2020s. Korean cultural content, as witnessed through BTS (K-pop), Parasite (K-cinema), and Squid Game (K-drama), has come to dominate mainstream culture on the global stage. This is especially true with Korean dramas, which played a pioneering role in the birth of the Korean Wave, as well as in generating interest in Korean society and culture. In recent years, thanks to global OTT platforms like Netflix, Korean dramas have been distributed to every corner of the planet and have attracted a wide range of audiences across racial, national, gender, and age divides. This book selected thirteen K-dramas for television and K-cinema films that have either become global hits thanks to the Korean Wave or are worthy of further exploration, and provides a wide-ranging look at the meanings and contexts of these works, as well as the reasons for their success and how they can be interpreted from different angles. In addition, this book examines the realities and specificities of Korean society and how those specificities are not just limited to Korea, but have become universal so that they now resonate with people around the world. The works covered in this book were all released between the second half of 2021 and the second half of 2022: Squid Game, Hellbound, The Silent Sea, D.P., All of Us Are Dead, Juvenile Justice, Pachinko, and Extraordinary Attorney Woo (dramas) and Broker, The Outlaws series, Alienoid, Seoul Vibe, and 20th Century Girl (movies). We sincerely hope this book will help readers better understand each of these works and develop an interest in and passion for K-cinema and K-dramas.
What does hanok mean to today's generation? Older generations may have memories of living in a hanok as a child or visiting relatives who lived in one. However, for younger people who have been exposed to hanok in a similar way culturally as they have been to Buddhist temples and palaces, hanok are often thought of as historical artifacts that need to be preserved in their old, taxidermized form.Recently, there have been an increasing number of hanok that break this perception and have a direct connection to young people in a friendlier, more attractive way. This is the result of owners who have broken away from the stereotype of traditional hanok and created their own unique hanok.Today, some owners are not only using hanok as residential spaces but also for commercial purposes, such as restaurants, cafes, offices, accommodations, and galleries. At the same time, they are contributing to preserving hanok and revitalizing local culture. From foreigners who arrived in Korea and fell in love with hanok, to those who created new hanok by designing and transforming them to suit their own purposes, the diverse ways of life and mindsets of these people make us rethink what hanok are. The beautiful harmony between tradition and modernity that is expressed through the passion and creativity of these people shows the infinite possibilities of hanok and gives us a glimpse into their future.Hanok Today is not an informational book that answers all of your questions with detailed descriptions about every hanok in every photo. Rather, the authors distill the individuality and essence of each hanok and beautifully arrange the images to convey the meaning of the space, inviting readers to see, feel, and think for themselves. Follow along with the text and photographs through the eyes of the two authors and add your own interpretation to them as you go.

North Korean Women in Power is the first field report on North Korea written by a South Korean woman reporter in English. Chun Su-jin, who refers to herself as a "Korean-Korean (South Korean nationality with a North Korean heritage)," introduces four North Korean women who make Chairman Kim Jong-un complete-the one and only blood to Chairman Kim, Kim Yo-jong; the First Lady with pride and dignity, Ri Sol-ju; a seasoned career diplomat, Choe Son-hui; and a de facto protocol officer, Hyun Song-wol.North Korea is a small, isolated country ruled by the authoritarian leader Kim Jong-un. They have locked the door and claim that they have nuclear weapons. Then they keep sending signals to the world-mainly to the United States and South Korea-by making statements and shooting missiles. So it may be inevitable for North Korea to be considered an incomprehensible strange country. But Chun tells us that they need to be properly understood for the safety and security of the world and the key to understand this hermit kingdom is the people who move the regime: the leader Kim Jong-un and his female entourage. There are quite a few books on North Korea, but not from a Korean-Korean. This book is the first of its kind from South Korean point of view targeting English-speaking readership. This is the product of the author's nearly 20 years of experience meeting and writing about North Korea. She has talked to tens of dozens of sources for this book alone, not to mention many others she met while working as a news reporter. This book will allow readers develop more interest and understanding the enigmatic country and its people
