Russell was an exceptional author and had an uncanny ability to make the most difficult spiritual subjects easy to understand and apply. He maintains a loyal following to this day and has published dozens of New Thought works on grief, faith, fear, vice, and many other inspirational subjects. This title starts by asking: "Are you sick? Is your body uncomfortable and perhaps racked with pain? Is some organ diseased or out of place or not functioning properly? Are you suffering from inaction or overaction? Is your mind distressed? Is your spirit rebellious? Do you wonder why God allows such conditions to exist or why He does not answer your prayer? Many persons have asked these questions and wondered about the same things. But wondering does not get one anywhere." This book is Russell's answer to these perennial questions.
2020 Reprint of the 1919 Edition. Winesburg, Ohio is a 1919 short story cycle by the Sherwood Anderson. The work is structured around the life of protagonist George Willard, from the time he was a child to his growing independence and ultimate abandonment of Winesburg as a young man. It is set in the fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Mostly written from late 1915 to early 1916, with a few stories completed closer to publication, they were conceived as complementary parts of a whole, centered in the background of a single community. The book consists of twenty-two stories, with the first story, "The Book of the Grotesque", serving as an introduction. Each of the stories shares a specific character's past and present struggle to overcome the loneliness and isolation that seem to permeate the town. Stylistically, because of its emphasis on the psychological insights of characters over plot, and plainspoken prose, Winesburg, Ohio is known as one of the earliest works of Modernist literature.Winesburg, Ohio was received well by critics despite some reservations about its moral tone and unconventional storytelling. Though its reputation waned in the 1930s, it has since rebounded and is now considered one of the most influential portraits of pre-industrial small-town life in the United States. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Winesburg, Ohio 24th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
2020 Reprint of the 1932 Edition. Thurman is perhaps best known for this novel, which is a satire of what he believed were the overrated creative figures of the Harlem scene. Some reviewers welcomed Thurman's bold insight, while others vilified him as a racial traitor. A thinly disguised memoir of Thurman's own experiences in the 1920s. "[This novel] centers on the larger-than-life denizens of a Harlem mansion called "Niggeratti Manor": The Novel pokes fun at a few famous writers, including Zora Neale Hurston, Alain Locke, and Langston Hughes. Thurman weaves a hilarious story that critiques the paternalistic Negro author/white patron relationship, uncovers the social-class antagonisms in the Afro-American community, and foreshadows the sexual and social themes of James Baldwin and E. Lynn Harris. Thurman's elegant and elastic prose adds more illumination to this bright period in African American literature. --Eugene Holley Jr.at Amazon.com."This delightful roman à clef about the Harlem Renaissance reflects . . . many of the competing notions of its time - between the masses and individuality, between art and uplift, between civilization and primitivism, between separatism and assimilation." - Kirkus Reviews
2020 Reprint of the 1915 Edition. Ford's 1915 novel is set just before World War I and chronicles the tragedy of Edward Ashburnham, the soldier to whom the title refers, and his seemingly perfect marriage plus that of his two American friends. The novel is told using a series of flashbacks in non-chronological order, a literary technique that formed part of Ford's pioneering view of literary impressionism. Ford employs the device of the unreliable narrator to great effect as the main character gradually reveals a version of events that is quite different from what the introduction leads the reader to believe. The novel was loosely based on two incidents of adultery and on Ford's messy personal life. Using pre-First World War Europe as its stage, The Good Soldier is the story of Edward Ashburnham, his wife Leonora, and their friends, John and Florence Dowell. The eponymous Good Soldier, Edward embodies upper-class English values but behind closed doors carries on a long-running affair with Florence. When Florence's husband, John, discovers the affair, he sets in motion a series of events both tragic and unavoidable.
2019 Reprint of 1923 Edition. Largely criticized or ignored by a war-weary public when it was originally published in 1922, A Son at the Front is an extraordinarily poignant novel chronicling the effects of WWI on painter John Campton and his only child, George. Wharton's antiwar masterpiece, now once again available, probes the devastation of World War I on the home front. Interweaving her own experiences of the Great War with themes of parental and filial love, art and self-sacrifice, national loyalties and class privilege, Wharton tells an intimate and captivating story of war behind the lines.

This title is one of eight comprising the series The Bible for School and Home. It was used in Charlotte Mason schools and intended for parents and teachers to use in preparing Bible lessons for the children in their charge. In concludes that "There is but one truth, and all sacred writings are parts or fragments of the ancient wisdom which has come down to us from time immemorial. 2019 Reprint of 1923 Edition. First published in 1923, Reminiscences is a fictionalized account of the life of the securities trader Jesse Livermore. Despite the book's age, it continues to offer insights into the art of trading and speculation. In Jack Schwager's Market Wizards, many of the traders interviewed considered Reminiscences a major source of stock trading information for both experienced and new traders. The book tells the story of Livermore's progression from day trading in the then so-called "New England bucket shops," to market speculator, market maker, and market manipulator, and finally to Wall Street where he made and lost his fortune several times over. Along the way, Livermore learns many lessons, which he happily shares with the reader. The Wall Street Journal described the book as a "classic", it was ranked #15 on Fortune's 75 The Smartest Books We Know, and Alan Greenspan said it is "a font of investing wisdom."
