Faulkner's first novel, Soldiers' Pay, is among the most memorable works to emerge from the First World War. Through the story of a wounded veteran's homecoming, it examines the impact of soldiers' return from war on the people¿particularly the women¿who were left behind. It was written during the summer of 1925, while he was working in New Orleans, that Faulkner met Sherwood Anderson and was encouraged by him to write a novel.Unlike his later books this post-war story of a wounded, helpless and dying officer returning home to his father and his fickle sweetheart is set in Georgia, but some of Faulkner's feeling for the south and many of his character-types are already foreshadowed.

The Key of Solomon (Latin: Clavicula Salomonis) is a grimoire (also known as a book of spells) attributed to King Solomon. It probably dates back to the 14th or 15th century Italian Renaissance. It presents a typical example of Renaissance magic. It is possible that the Key of Solomon inspired later works, particularly the 17th-century grimoire also known as Clavicula Salomonis Regis, Lesser Key of Solomon or Lemegeton, although there are many differences between the books. Many such grimoires attributed to King Solomon were written during the Renaissance, ultimately being influenced by earlier works of Jewish kabbalists and Arab alchemists. These, in turn, incorporated aspects of the Greco-Roman magic of Late Antiquity.This grimoire of sigils and rituals for summoning and mastering spirits the most famous, or infamous, of all magic books. It has influenced everything from the revival of magic and the Western Mystery Traditions (tarot, alchemy, astrology, etc.) to fictional works such as Lovecraft's The Necronomicon.S. L. MacGregor Mathers (1854-1918) was a prominent scholar and leader of the occult movement in Britian at the turn of the century. A lifelong fascination with mysticism and Celtic symbolism led Mathers to hold high office in the Rosicrucian Society of England, and eventually to become a founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He is also well known for having been a key tutor to Aleister Crowley.

Few people have had as dramatic an influence on modern ideas of child education as Maria Montessori. Born in 1870, Montessori was an Italian physician and educator. Maria drew on her own experiences working with children as well as insights from her Roman Catholic faith to pioneer a new way to help children learn. Her approach, known as the Montessori Method, continues to be used with great success today.In the preface to Maria Montessori's treatise on childhood learning The Secret of Childhood, Maria's son Mario clearly articulates the vision that his mother shared. In the first words of this preface, he writes: "Today's problems with regard to youth and childhood are the most patent proof that teaching is not the most important part of education. Yet the delusion persists that teachers form the person through their teaching of the child."At the center of the Montessori way is an understanding of the child as a person worthy of respect. She writes, "I have come to appreciate the fact that children have a deep sense of personal dignity. Adults, as a rule, have no concept of how easily they are wounded and oppressed."

Dunne, a British soldier, aeronautical engineer and philosopher describes in this work his experiment with precognitive dreams and builds on them a theory of time which he later called Serialism. First published in March 1927, the book was widely read and influenced the imaginative literature of the day. An Experiment with Time divides into two main topics. The first half of the book describes a number of precognitive dreams, most of which Dunne himself had experienced. His key conclusion was that such precognitive visions foresee future personal experiences by the dreamer and not more general events. The second half develops a theory to try and explain the dreams. Dunne's starting point is the observation that the moment of "now" is not described by science. Contemporary science described physical time as a fourth dimension and Dunne's argument led to an endless sequence of higher dimensions of time to measure our passage through the dimension below. Accompanying each level was a higher level of consciousness. At the end of the chain was a supreme ultimate observer.According to Dunne, our wakeful attention prevents us from seeing beyond the present moment, whilst when dreaming that attention fades and we gain the ability to recall more of our timeline. This allows fragments of our future to appear in pre-cognitive dreams, mixed in with fragments or memories of our past. Other consequences include the phenomenon known as deja-vu and the existence of life after death.Dunne's ideas strongly influenced the J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. Both writers were members of the Inklings literary circle, and Tolkien also used Dunne's ideas about parallel time dimensions in the Lord of the Rings. Other important contemporary writers who used his ideas included John Buchan, James Hilton, his old friend H. G. Wells, Graham Greene and Rumer Godden.

He dutifully records his ever-changing states of consciousness, which culminate in a powerful religious experience. Big Sur was written sometime after Jack Kerouac's best-known works, following a visit to northern California and the first feelings of midlife crisis. Kerouac stayed for several weeks in a cabin in Big Sur, California, and with friends in San Francisco. Upon returning home, he wrote this account in a two-week period. Critic Richard Meltzer referred to Big Sur as Kerouac's 'masterpiece, and one of the great, great works of the English language."

In 1916 Arthur Conan Doyle made a declaration that would impact the rest of his life. He stated his belief in Spiritualism. Could it be? Did the man who created the ever-logical Sherlock Holmes believe in ghosts? During October of 1917 Conan Doyle gave his first public lecture on Spiritualism. He wanted to present the facts, as he knew them, for the benefit of mankind. Even though he knew his reputation and career would suffer he became an outspoken proponent for the movement. He was so sincere that even opponents of Spiritualism considered him to be well-intentioned. Our American Adventure is an account of a trip made by Arthur Conan Doyle to the U.S. in 1922. In the book Doyle recounts his and his speaking tours discussing spiritualism in New York, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, New Haven (Yale), Buffalo, Toronto, Detroit, Toledo and Chicago.

The Moberly-Jourdain incident was an event that occurred on 10 August 1901 in the gardens of the Petit Trianon, involving two female academics, Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain. The women were both from educated backgrounds. During a trip to Versailles, they visited the Petit Trianon, a small chateau in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, where they allegedly experienced a time slip, and saw Marie Antoinette as well as other people of the same period. After researching the history of the palace, and comparing notes of their experience, they published their work in a book entitled An Adventure, under the names of Elizabeth Morison and Frances Lamont, in 1911. Their story caused a sensation and continues to find a readership to this day. This edition is Edited by Joan Evans.

He taught and lectured on horology, was an industry consultant and illustrated his own books. He was a consultant for Random House Dictionary and the Merriam Webster Dictionary. He was president of the New York City Horological Society and the New York State Watchmakers Association. He was also vice president of the old Horological Institute of America and was the first American to receive the Silver Medal of the British Horological Institute. For decades, he was the watchmaker whom others consulted on the really challenging cases, a fact he attributed in part to his "tweezer skills." While he received just about every honor imaginable in his field, the one he got last fall meant more than most: A clock tower at the new world headquarters of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute near Cincinnati was dedicated in his honor.

Chesterton detailing a popular theme both in his own philosophy, and in Christianity, that of the "holy fool", such as in Dostoevsky's The Idiot and Cervantes' Don Quixote. This is a book in two parts. The first, "The Enigma of Innocent Smith", concerns the arrival of a new tenant at Beacon House, a London boarding establishment. Like Mary Poppins, this man (who is tentatively identified by lodger Arthur Inglewood as an ex-schoolmate named Innocent Smith) is accompanied by a great wind, and he breathes new life into the household with his games and antics. However, when the household is at its happiest two doctors appear with awful news: Smith is wanted on charges of burglary, desertion of a spouse, polygamy, and attempted murder. The fact that Smith almost immediately fires several shots from a revolver at Inglewood's friend Dr. Herbert Warner seems to confirm the worst. Before Smith can be taken to a jail or an asylum, Michael Moon declares that the case falls under the purview of the High Court of Beacon and suggests that the household investigate the matter before involving the authorities or the press.The second part, "The Explanations of Innocent Smith", follows the trial.
