This book is the first of its kind in Pakistan and aims to encompass all major aspects of Pakistans culinary offerings. Through an exhaustive but meticulous selection of subjects and detailed entries on them by experts in their field, this encyclopaedia offers an insight into the gastronomic history and food ethos of Pakistan. The volume will serve as a valuable reference book on almost all the elements of Pakistani food, including people, places, events, historical data, and food culture. It draws on subjects like archaeology, history, botany, and anthropology. Providing a wealth of information on food materials and the cuisine of the country, it includes descriptions of dishes from across Pakistan, cooking techniques practiced, and ingredients and utensils commonly used.

After Independence he was appointed a member of the delegation to negotiate the Indus Water Dispute with India. The author is widely recognized as an eminent engineer and his historical perspective on the water resources development of arid regions is a useful reference for those interested in working on these issues in Pakistan.

The extraordinarily visible and ubiquitous presence of the state in most of South Asia points to its overarching power. The states unbridled reach also suggests its importance as a locus for societal hopes, frustrations, and aspirations. However, scholarship on Pakistan (and to a lesser degree, South Asia more broadly), has offered few systematic attempts to address the complexity of these state-society relations. This edited volume is an attempt in this direction. A defining feature of this volume is its focus on the state and society through a critical engagement with the theoretical openings offered by Michel Foucault. Prime among these lenses is the replacement of the concept of citizens with subjects, i.e., individuals whose modes of thinking and acting are shaped and governed by the intrusive arms of the state-apparatus. The contribution of the book is not simply theoretical; each chapter is deeply grounded in a South Asian context, with a sizable majority of chapters focusing specifically on Pakistan. The captivating case studies that lie at the heart of each chapter allow us to step into those domains of state-society relations-everyday life, discourses, rituals, etc.-that have been largely ignored in other studies on the state in Pakistan.

This book is about Pakistans most popular Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar whose shrine in Sehwan Sharif is one of the most fascinating sanctuaries in the Muslim world. At the time of pilgrimage, this flourishing cult centre becomes a vibrant place of ecstatic religiosity marked by intense forms of devotion. The present ethnographic study is organized around three themes: piety, pilgrimage, and ritual. Thus, its focus is first on visual culture and material religionas well as various aspects of religious aesthetics which highlight how sacred spaces are constructed and shaped. Secondly, it deals with the year-round pilgrimage, mainly investigating pilgrims from Punjab (including a unique life history of a female Sufi lineage from Lahore), but also discussingremarkable ritual agents in the cult. The third theme is the spectacular trance dance known as dhamal. On February 16, 2017, a suicide bomber executed a horrible massacre among the dancing devotees.

This book identifies and analyzes the impact of the various ways in which local people are responding, taking stands, recapturing their culture, and saying 'stop' to the violent extremism that has manifested over the past decade (even longer) in Pakistan.
