This is the year I grew old became aware of lawscareless of the lives they dislodge designed to break down wallsto shatter this house of strong timbers solid as rock. This is the year I grew old my children and Imake our way alone, our life endedas sharply as the lines I slashed on paper reduced to a scarred charcoal image."
Matthew: The Place of Faith in the Life of a Family With an Autistic Child by Fr. Louis Fowoyo is a non-fictional, faith-centred book about Matthew, who suffers form autism. His inspiring story embodies hope in the face of hardship.Matthew was born one month premature. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. He was non-verbal, with severe sensory and behavioural problems. Even with a whole team of specialists trying to help him, nothing seemed to be working and I was at my wits end.A friend of mine recommended that I take him to a naturopath doctor, who told us Matthew had severe allergies to gluten, dairy, and a few others confirmed by blood work. The doctor recommended a strict diet and supplements. He told us it would take a year to clean him out.Astonishingly, when the year finished, Matthew began to talk. He had fewer behavioural problems, but still had a ways to go.Matthew is now 20 years old, finishing grade 12 by home schooling. He still needs care in areas, but he's a loving, bright man with a great sense of humour. We all love him very much.I recommend to others prayer, love, patience, naturopathic help, and diet.
A mother and her two teenage daughters head to the city where she grew up to arrange for her grandmother's funeral and of disposal of assets. They give themselves lots of time for traveling and for everything they need to accomplish while they're there, fully expecting to be back at home living their normal lives within a month. But it doesn't work out that way. Within a couple of weeks, they are thrust into a new way of living, along with everyone else they meet. Can they survive?Excerpt from Consequences: A Gripping Tale of Survival in the Midst of Loss by Gail Gillingham Wylie:"Margret smiled and leaned her head back against the headrest. I got this. She wasn't sure of how she managed to raise such independent daughters. She could never remember a time when she truly felt like she could say, I got this and mean it. Maybe they had skipped back a couple of generations and taken all their genes from their grandmother. She glanced to her left again at Marisa. How thankful she was that she had insisted that she be allowed to try out for her driver's licence as soon as she was old enough to have one. It was so much easier to make this trip with two drivers instead of one.Margret closed her eyes and allowed her thoughts to drift back over the events of the past week. The tortured hours of pacing the floor after they had returned home from the school, waiting for John to call. Finally, his face appearing on the iPad: solid, dependable and comforting, her sobs as she begged him to come home on the next flight, his promise to her that he would try.The night of fitful sleep filled with dark images of men grabbing her daughters and driving off with them in a black van, only to have them reappear at her side with her grandmother. A much younger and more vibrant grandmother than she had seen in years. John's call the next morning when he asked to speak with Marisa. The agonizing minutes in the next room, biting her fingernails, as she waited to hear what they were talking about. And then finally, the family call in which John carefully explained that he could not leave right away. He wanted them to drive to Grande Prairie in the Dodge Caravan, taking as little with them as possible. He would join them in Grande Prairie by air as soon as the Super Bowl was over. When Margret resisted, it was Marisa who took over the conversation, insisting that she would help drive and make sure they got to her grandmother's in record time."

"You can't drive at highway speed in first gear, and you can't live at the speed of destiny in the first gear of grace."When you shift through the gears of a vehicle there is tension felt when you reach each gear's speed limit. Using that as a metaphor, Landen identifies six 'gears of grace' or revelations of the nature of God's grace, along with the tension that one feels when one reaches the speed limit of that revelation. He then identifies the 'clutch' or discipline of a disciple necessary to relieve that tension, allowing for the 'shift into a new gear' to grow as a disciple. One's maturity in Christ is proportionate to the revelation of God's grace they live in.

Of course, we were sad not to have Dad present, but Mom was the centre of our home, and she was amazing. She cared for us and was such a good mom that we rarely felt the absence of anything vital even during such a time of upheaval in the world. We were always fed, clothed, and loved. In retrospect, Mom's desire to be a teacher probably made her especially engaged in reading to us and teaching us as we grew up. I remember her reading Bible stories to us at night and saying bedtime prayers. Our home was very adequate for the time. It had seven rooms; four upstairs bedrooms meant the boys shared one room, the girls had another, one was a sewing room for Mom, and the fourth was a guest room. Mom's bedroom was on the main floor to the left of the back door. Through her room was the indoor bathroom, and to the right was the living area and kitchen. We lived only two blocks from the school and close to downtown. Shaunavon was not that big, but we got to see and experience a lot. My earliest memories there were pre-school and the wonderful freedom that afforded me to just be a child. Before Grade 1, I was a dreamy kid with no concept of responsibility or of how hard life could be. As the youngest,I may have been spoiled just a little. My sister Pat remembers me laying on the floor, kicking and screaming while trying to get my own way. I obviously have a strong will, and according to my sister, Mom had a hard time handling me on occasion."
Set in the 20th century, From Leeds to Lashburn by Joyce Sjogren is a historical romance which begins in Britain and ends in Lashburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1903, while in England, Louise Hesley receives a letter from her lover in Canada, telling her that he wants to marry her and asking her to move to Canada to be with him. Although reluctant at first, Louise is excited to start a new life in Canada with James, her soon-to-be husband, hopeful that it will give them both the opportunity to build their love and their lives in a new and exciting country. They soon realize though that life in Canada is far from simple as they strive to overcome both old and new challenges, all of which test their love. Will their love overcome and stand the test of time? Prologue:"My story starts in Leeds, England, an industrial city, where Louise was born and raised and where she would learn the many talents that sustained her and her husband through the rough times. James, her husband, was also from Leeds, a devout member of the Church of England. Through hard work and adaptability, they survived the harshness of the land and raised two daughters. Both lived a long life, more comfortable in the last few years, always remaining solidly behind the teachings of the Bible. In my story I have navigated around stories that Louise, whom I met in 1958 when I married her grandson, Donald Irving Sharpe(son of Elizabeth 'Betty' & Albert Irving Sharpe), often spoke of regarding the times surrounding her time in Saskatchewan. She mentioned the Railroad, the Province and Rev. Lloyd(the city of Lloydminster is named after) during the 1900's when she made the determination to immigrate and meet up with her true love. She persevered through all the difficulties coming to the bald prairie, knowing very little of the multitude of facets of climate and farm life..."

Children identify themselves with many different strengths according to their different social circles. We can't be good at everything. Yet, being good at something, whether it be a sport or kindness or generosity or humour can help children find where they belong, and help them become confident in themselves.I Identify is a book written to show all the ways children identify themselves and others in their social circles: by their strengths and talents. Children identify themselves by many characteristics: kind, fast, brave, funny, musical, stylish, creative... and they recognize those same strengths andtalents in their friends and peers. This is a book written in love, for the love of children. To remind them and ourselves to focus on the positive thatwe see in them. That they are perfectly made on purpose for a purpose. It is always important to focus on a child's strengths. I hope that children will see themselves in at least one character in this book, and will also be able to point out other children that they recognize for the strengths they possess! Excerpt from I Identify by Erin McCormack:"I identify as smart.I may find some work intimidating, but once I make myself understand then it becomes easy and I can help my friends understand too.I identify as musical.I don't play any instruments, but I can listen to music and remember all the words to all the songs and I will sing them at the top of my lungs when I am all alone." Praise for the book:"We live in a society where the topic of identity can be confusing and scary. In her book, 'I Identify,' Erin McCormack addresses the subject of identity for children in a simple and profound way that all who read can benefit from. McCormack demonstrates that identity is a broad term as well as a personal one but most of all, identity is accessible to everyone. This book is a solid foundation for children to build on their sense of self and who they are as a child of God created with unique gifts, talents and strengths."Jenny McConnell, Masters in Special Education
Art in the City: Michael VonDrak and His San Francisco Paintings is a biography and retrospect of American artist Michael VonDrak, focusing on his San Francisco paintings, and written by his daughter, Ilona Ryder. When Ilona Ryder was writing the personal biography of her grandfather, Michael Curtiz, she asked her father Michael VonDrak many questions. At one point, exasperated, he turned to her and said, "you should be writing about me!" That statement haunted her for years.Michael VonDrak, a successful artist in San Francisco at the time, did not live to see his wish come true. Now his first daughter has answered the call, has sketched the varied details of his life in the cities where he lived, and has created a collage of his creative work. Michael's friends and the many people who knew him can finally hold in their hands, a vivid reminder of Michael's spirited nature and creative energy.¿¿¿Excerpt from Art in the City: Michael VonDrak and His San Francisco Paintings by Ilona Ryder:"San Francisco, California, has long been a haven for artists, and my artist father Michael VonDrak was fortunate to make the City On The Bay his home for almost twenty years during his most mature period. The color reproductions featured in this book not only display some of his best work, but they also represent the breadth and depth of subject, technique and materials that he developed over his long career. Over the years, Michael VonDrak created different versions of his artistic vision. Of the many bits scattered throughout his personal effects, the brochure from his years in San Diego features this statement: 'Artists should be able to create expressions in such a way that they appear visually and need no verbal explanation.'His insistence that the artwork should speak for itself echoes some of our conversations." ¿¿Contributions by:Tessa Nunn, BA, BFA, MFA, provides a professional assessment of VonDrak's art.Mark Stokes of Round Rock, Texas shares his memories of VonDrak painting with his circle of friends.Robert Ryder, VonDrak's grandson, now lives in Chicago, Illinois and is a professor of German at Northwestern University. *A number of the art pieces featured in this book are available for purchase as prints.
I'm Florally Challenged, which is inspired by some real life events and occurrences in author David Colpitts' life, is a collection of 21 short stories and poems that will make you laugh and reflect on life.In the author's own words,"This book will divert your thoughts with a mix of humor and irrelevant observations. Some of the stories are true. Some are more true than I care to admit, since I can't recall the names of flowers (the title story), fit into a wet suit nor remember to floss. Some are almost fabrications. Have you taken a young lady hiking or to soccer practice when she is more interested in young men? There can be consequences. You might get a kitten!.." Excerpt from I'm Florally Challenged by David Colpitts:"My barrel chest and washboard stomach have switched places. That phenomenon has changed more than my mating habits. It has changed how wetsuits fit me. My old suit was past its life expectancy. I needed a new one for white- water canoeing in rivers refrigerated by glacial water. Hypothermia, I've heard, is one of the better ways to go, but could render the dearly departed unsuitable for an open casket and I wanted my mother-in-law to see that I had died with a smile on my face. Clearly, I had to get a new wetsuit. An internet search showed they were readily available online. The sizing seemed straightforward enough: weight, 155 to 180 pounds, height between 5'9" and 6'0". Medium-large. That's me. The online catalog showed models steely-of-eye and firm-of-chin looking movie star sleek, muscles distinct beneath the rubberized sheath. With a few clicks of the mouse, that could be me. Well, not quite me. I would have to practice the steely-eye gaze essential for seeking a route through tricky eddies and currents, just like those canoeists pictured in the wetsuits. The ever-present chiseled chin might be a problem, too, but I did have a few days to bushy up some facial hair to hide my three unchiseled chins."
"Do not call up that which you cannot put down"I wish my dad had taken this advice when calling Duke Vepar from the depths of Hell!Father's arrogance unleashed the Duke and his festering legions like a plague upon this earth. It seems the sins of the father really do transfer to the son. With a combination of ancient knowledge and practical skill, I took it upon myself to clean up my father's own mess. Vepar's Infernal Legions: The Complete Compendium and How to Smite Them All by Sean G. McAnulty is a first-person account of a young man's journey across land and sea to confront Vepar, a water demon unleashed from Hell. The start of every chapter begins as an encyclopedia entry, written by the protagonist, GT, who details each monster he met along the way. After outlining objective details about each monster, GT goes on to describe his own personal encounters with all 29 of Vepar's legions. In each encounter, GT must fight using both the knowledge he's studied in demonology as well as practical experiences he's had working with his hands. This book is part of the author's "Infernal Legions" series.Excerpt from Vepar's Infernal Legions: The Complete Compendium and How to Smite Them All by Sean G. McAnulty: "Like Belial Lupuls, Caecilian Tartarus are vulnerable to conventional weapons. It can flatten itself to absorb blows from blunt striking implements, but it will be torn apart by bullets or knives. The fiend seems to be stealthier than the Hell Hound, however. The worm is dark in appearance, smaller in size, and as noted above it is able to squeeze through holes as small as the diameter of a dime.Having said all that, an alert and armed person can dispatch this demon with relative ease, provided he avoids direct contact to his flesh. The demon is prone to extreme heat, which can also be used to burn out Vepar's infection before it grows to maturity. It does not appear to be affected by sunlight. The demon does not appear to have any significant reaction to pure metals like silver. It will shy away from salt, recoiling as though experiencing pain. However, salt will not kill the fiend. At very early stages it can be neutralized by clinical antiseptics."

Sojourner by Marguerite Antonio is an eco-conscious science fiction story featuring intergalactic beings, talking dolphins and more. The author's love for sea creatures, especially dolphins and others that are endangered due to pollution inspired the book.Although a traditional science fiction, some qualities make Sojourner unique:The blend of fictional elements such as, space travel portals with real life elements such as, nature, humans. This makes the book very relatable, even to those who may not be typical sci fi fans.As the story combines eco consciousness with entertainment, it takes readers to an exciting fictional world whilst also keeping them grounded in reality and conscious of its challenges. The current push for awareness on environmental pollution and its consequences on Earth make the book especially relevant today.Synopsis of Sojourner by Marguerite Antonio:"Etroygylus is honoured, and somewhat nervous, to be the youngest captain of the four landing parties that the Intergalactic Council dispatched to planet Earth. Their mission is to surreptitiously study and report on the severity of pollution on the planet, and to assess the degree to which humans are addressing the problem. Although he has been well trained, and well versed in the history of Earth's people, he can only hope that his true identity remains hidden behind his alias, "Troy", and that he can safely pilot the landing craft, and lead his crew to successfully complete their mission. He knows they will face challenges and danger, and could meet with hostility and suspicion, but he trusts their sojourn on planet Earth will be informative and hopefully rewarding."
Howls of the Forgotten by Linda Bondy is a striking tale centred around the life of a wolf dog named Sabean, her lived-in experiences, and the people and creatures she meets. The author was inspired to write the story following an unfortunate occurrence she witnessed involving a dog.The main character, Sabean is very relatable, and so is the story itself. Perhaps it's because the author employs:Personification, which humanizes Sabean's character, and connects and draws the reader into her worldVivid imagery and a strong narrative voice, which help emphasize and convey her struggles and later, triumphIn the author's words:"I thought when I retired; I'd write a story about some of the unfortunate people I encountered. One morning, I saw a young German Shepherd, about eight months old. She was stopping traffic on the road to look into the cars for her master. She was probably just another unwanted dog someone had abandoned in the country and forgotten. After work, I drove where I'd seen her last; I was shocked to see the dog dead on the side of the road; someone either didn't see her or didn't bother to drive around the animal. I vowed to give that poor dog a life she was denied by writing a story about her; I would make her a Shepherd/wolf cross to give her strength and country smarts.I call her Sabean."
Keep Me Sane by Sarah Cowan is a poetry collection consisting of over 90 short poems. There are four sections representing four stages or themes: The SorrowsThe FallThe ChangeThe HealingThe poems are diverse, and evoke a range of emotions as the reader progresses. Many of the poems are certainly intimate, although not extremely so, just enough to give the reader a glance into the poet's world, and prompt reflection. In the author's own words:The pages in Keep Me Sane basically prove that poetry is how I breathe. Thanks to poetry, I have evidently remained sane through all of the challenging obstacles that life has presented to me such as, falling in love, breakup, and heartache. Additionally, it's helped me become a better listener, and heal a broken heart.Excerpt from Keep Me Sane by Sarah Cowan:Keep Me Sane"The escape route from the world is carved by the poet's pen, sculpting passion and emotion with each stroke.Through the outlet of poetry, poets choose vulnerability through words. To write releases all of those pent up emotions.Putting them all on this piece of paperto get it into the world and out of the mind..."
In "How to Get Out of a Mental Hospital," Phillip Fragile shares his life experience from far gone, hopeless and out of control, to well and managed. This book covers all the thought processes and mindsets for getting from A to B. Phillip Fragile was the worst of the worst. He couldn't cope with treatment. He couldn't relate with common sense. He had a bad reputation. They said he had lack of insight. Phillip goes through every scenario. He explains step by step the way out of the gutter and how to change one's reputation. He went from being harmful to gentle. He became himself again. To all those people that had lost hope, he returned. This is the easiest, fastest and simplest way to regain self control. This book shows how anyone who can read can go from certified, restrained and locked in a scary asylum to friendly, polite and worry free in the outside world. Phillip had been given up on. He put himself back together and it is covered in this material. This is, "How to Get Out of a Mental Hospital".Excerpt from "How to Get Out of a Mental Hospital":"Are you throwing up red flags? Do you talk about vulgar things? Do you use swear words in every conversation? A calm and polite person does none of this. It doesn't even matter what your illness is, if you keep yourself in check. Do not be intimidating. They should never have to wonder if you are going to lash out. This doesn't sound fair, but in a mental hospital, they will treat you restrictively based on how you make them feel, not necessarily on your actions.Have a good reputation. Stay calm in the face of adversity. Be calm and be fine with whatever you are facing. If they tell you that no one can visit you, you have to be fine. If they tell you that you can't smoke, you have to be fine. If they told you that they are letting you go, then change their statement, you have to be fine. You will handle it. You are fine. Otherwise you could fade eternity in a box. Some people don't get out. Be ice under fire."

This book discusses how I found LIFE and how I navigated in both the earthly realm and spiritual realm. This book is my testimony of God's dealing in my life. Many Christians believe that if they follow strict rules in the giving of tithes and offerings, sowing of seeds, regular church attendance, working for the church, prayer and fasting, and helping the poor and needy they are pleasing God. While these acts of piousness should not be ignored, God looks on the motives of the heart and not necessarily the outward show of godliness. Some of us ponder why God does not respond to our prayers and fasting, though we adhere to strict biblical rules and principles. The book demonstrates how curses from: your generation, authorities and self projected words can have impact on an individual's life.As you read along you may find out that some of the hindrances to the promises and blessings could be as a result of our rebellion and disobedience. The reader is given life changing information from the authors' personal experiences. This will encourage readers to embrace the truth of God's word and to recognize that whatever the Lord has spoken will be manifested in His timing and your readiness.
