This book takes a fresh look at the Minoan Abacus and the Phaistos Disk, and presents recent discoveries about the two Minoan calendars. One of these was for use by priests, for religious ceremonies, while the other was meant for the navy. This suggests elements of a very advanced, almost modern, civilization. Another subject treated in this context is the role the Minoan Labyrinth plays, being the oldest map of the sky. Here, basic models and prototypes are developed from material from such diverse sources as the Orphic texts, Homeric Epics, and Pythagoras and his followers, as well as Plato, Aristotle and others. The interdisciplinary approach will appeal to scientists interested in ancient astronomy, calendars, science and technology.

This is a volume in the new IYPE series commemorating the UN International Year of Planet Earth. It presents the current state-of-the-art in soil sciences, and ways forward for a sustainable future. The book provides a wealth of information on soils offered by new airborne and space-borne sensors, with unprecedented detail, accuracy, rapid regional and global coverage, and also information from deep below the surface. This new data is used in climate models, agricultural and forest production estimates, assessment of land degradation and improvement, water resources management, and estimation of erosion and sedimentation. The book discusses how good intelligence can support interventions to arrest salinity, identify shallow groundwater resources, design water storages and other engineering works, and assess land suitability for particular uses. TOC:1.Introduction: Context of Land Use and Management.- Part 1.The Status of the Soils. 2.The Soils.- 3.Soil Composition and Texture.- 4.Soil Mineralogy and Elemental Composition.- 5.Absorption Capacity and Reaction.- 6.Soluble Salts and Soil Solution.- 7.Humus - the Mainspring of Fertility.- 8.The Nitrogen Riddle.- 9.Phosphorus and Sulphur Budgets.- 10.Life in the Soil.- 11.Soil Structure, Soil Water and Drought.- 12.The Chernozem Family.- 13.Land Degradation and Accommodating Soil Diversity.- 14.Society's Perspective.- Part 2.Principles of Ecological Agriculture. 15.Biological Cycles.- 16.Soil Health and Quality.- 17.Farming and Soil Health.- 18.The Past, Present and Future of Chemozem.

Following the events of 9/11, the Administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency created the Water Protection Task Force (WPTF), which identified water distribution networks as a major area of vulnerability. Steps can be taken to reduce the chances of future occurrences and to make it as difficult as possible for potential saboteurs to succeed, and security will have to be scrutinized with renewed vigor to secure water and wastewater systems against these possible threats. While it is impossible to defend all water treatment facilities against terrorism with existing resources, it is necessary to have a response plan in the event an act of terrorism occurs. Novel technologies from various fields of science and engineering are addressing water security issues and looking for innovative solutions. The need is for rapid on-line detection methods that are accurate and have a wide detection range. Once such technologies are available, there will be a rapid implementation process that will present many business opportunities for the private sector. The proposed volume will address the problems associated with intended terrorist attack or natural disaster affecting water or wastewater systems. The book is divided into parts based on the kinds of threats on a water distribution system: (1) a direct attack on major infrastructure, such as dams, treatment plants, storage reservoirs, and pipelines; (2) a cyber attack disabling the functionality of the water utility system or taking over control of key components which might result water outages; and (3) a deliberate chemical or biological contaminant injection at one of the water distribution system's nodes. It will examine unique plans, technological and managerial innovations in protecting such systems, or description of projects that were implemented. The volume also address the role Public-Private Partnerships in securing such systems. Case studies discuss existing projects evaluates their performance, with an emphasis on providing guidelines involving protecting methods that could be implemented. TOC:Introduction: The Scope of the Water Protection Problem.- Elements of Physical Security.- Planning for Security.- Nature and Consequences of the Attack.- Protecting Against Cyber Warfare.- Contaminant Monitoring Systems.- Placement of Sensors.- Containment Strategy.- Chlorine Residual Management.- Nebraska's Drinking Water Protection System.- Cincinnati's Approach.- Privatization and Water Protection.
