Intersectionality is a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. Crenshaw, a scholar of law, critical race theory, and Black feminist legal theory, uses intersectionality to explain the experiences of Black women who--because of the intersection of their race, gender, and class--are exposed to exponential and interlocking forms of marginalization and oppression, often rendering them invisible. The third edition of Intersectionality & Higher Education: Theory, Research, & Praxis further documents and expands upon Crenshaw's articulation of intersectionality within the context of higher education. In Roman Catholicism and Neo-Calvinism, author Eduardo Echeverria asks: what do Rome and Amsterdam have to say to each other? Taking the global sport of Formula 1 (F1) motor racing as a sustained case study, Streaming the Formula 1 Rivalry examines how the relationship between the sport and the media has evolved in this new digital environment. Starting with a map of the political economy of F1 and its complex commercial relationship with sponsors, investors, and the media, shows how new media owners have aimed to use social and digital media strategies to deepen the global reach of a television sport previously thought of by many as in decline. This book develops the main political lessons that the Mexican Neozapatismo movement brings us, in its almost 30 years of public life. Thus, beginning by defining the singular concept of Autonomy that the Neozapatista movement proposes, different from legal, anthropological or political definitions, and conceived as real global autonomy. Then the content of the Neozapatista oxymoron 'Mandar Obedeciendo', 'To Lead by Obeying' is explained as identical to the idea of popular self-government. A new concept of autonomy is linked necessarily with the idea of 'Other Politics' and 'Other Democracy'. The book also presents how Neozapatismo embodies a project of modernity that, having been constructed as a modernity of resistance for five centuries to the dominant modernity imposed by the Spaniards in Mexico, has now been transformed into a project of a real alternative modernity to capitalism.

The Black Feminist Coup: Black Women's Lived Experiences in White Supremacist Feminist Academic Spaces is a collective narrative of how three Black women faculty at a large Midwestern PWI, and two of their former students and allies build alliances to collaboratively disrupt white supremacist feminist spaces. Themes of what it means to be a fugitive, to be free, and to be a feminist inform how we envision the future of Black women's labor in the academy. More specifically, this project explores intersecting narratives of how three Black women faculty fled a racist and microaggressive Gender and Women's Studies (GWS) department, following the start of the COVID 19 pandemic and the 2020 summer of racial unrest, and moved to an institute that houses African American and African studies. Their stories of misogynoir reflect a brutal irony that GWS departments expect Black women to further all women's interests while impeding Black women's ability to thrive. This work demands that institutions bear responsibility in providing Black women with an environment to thrive, and dream of new possibilities and opportunities to develop curricula and initiatives that center Black lives with priority. Bridging at the intersections of feminism, Black Studies, and higher education, this project surveys concepts of survival, trauma, pain, and healing to offer future possibilities for dismantling and challenging systems of white supremacy in the academy. The Black Feminist Coup is a groundbreaking text. Through courageous counter-stories and brilliant theoretical engagements, the authors spotlight the various intellectual traditions, institutional arrangements, power dynamics, and sociocultural practices that have made academia a persistent site of oppression and violence for Black women. This updated, new edition of this book explores the emergence of what the author terms "late modernist freakish aesthetics"- a creative fusion of "high" and "low" themes and forms in relation to distorted bodies. Literary and cinematic texts about "freaks" by Nathanael West, Djuna Barnes, Tod Browning, and Carson McCullers subvert and reinvent modern progress narratives in order to challenge high modernist literary and social ideologies. These works are marked by an acceptance of the dysteleology, anarchy, and degeneration that racist discourses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries associated with racial and ethnic outsiders, particularly Jews. In a period of American culture beset with increasing pressures for social and political conformity and with the threat of fascism from Europe, these late modernist narratives about "freaks" defy oppressive norms and values as they search for an anarchic and transformational creativity.

Writing can be a tortuous process in any discipline. However, it can be particularly daunting in science, technology, engineering, the arts or architecture, and mathematics (henceforth, STEAM). In fact, it is not uncommon for most STEAM professionals to say things like, "As an engineer, I write only when I have to..." or "engaging in science is easy for me but sitting down and writing my manuscripts are so painful" or "I'm really good at math but I'm a terrible writer..." However, writing can become an easier process in STEAM especially when one's ideas are fleshed out and organized in a systematic manner. While there are a number of books or articles on reading and writing in specific STEM disciplines, at present, there are no books or supplementary materials that serve to support STEAM learners, practitioners, and even researchers in becoming better critical writers. Writing Critically in STEAM will be the first book of its kind to focus primarily on what the scientist, technology specialist, engineer, artist, art historian, or architect, and mathematician needs to know in order to become a finer writer in one's field. In addition, given the current post-truth zeitgeist, Writing Critically in STEAM addresses the essential issue of evidence as a means of supporting scientific and scientifically related claims.

At its onset, the American Indian Women of Proud Nations Organization set out to create a space that would uplift Native American women, children, and families because of their central roles in the continuation of Native communities. The contributors to the second edition continue to document and reflect on the organization's initiative and the efforts of Southeastern Native women and their allies to center women, children and families in protecting and strengthening kinship, land, and language as enduring aspects of Native American cultures. White supremacy and American-style individual autonomy are mutually supportive and co-dependent. Attacking white racism will not dislodge white supremacy, which the author contends is the greatest danger facing America. The first of its kind, this book focuses on the personal and educational experiences of three Latina teachers in the Deep South, using contemporary young adult literature written by three Latina authors. The three-month narrative ethnographic study explored the lived experiences of these teachers during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection methods included book talks, altered book tasks, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and ethnographic field notes. This study disrupted traditional methods by emphasizing cultural trenzas (braids), highlighting the linguistic and cultural attributes of the Latina teacher participants. Findings revealed three predominant themes in the narrative stories shared by the participants, namely: grounding by family, the experience of belongingness, and empowerment (stemming from bilingualism and increased awareness through young adult literature).

Our passion and pride to serve our community instilled a desire to provide adequate preparation of biculturalbilingual counselors. Five Spanish-speaking Latina scholars, with professional experience as bilingual counselors, recognized the multitude of challenges encountered when providing services in Spanish without any formal training. As you read this text, know that this book was created by bilingual counselors, and for bilingual counselors, to raise our collective voice. Throughout our first conversations we realized a significant problem in the field: the overall assumption that in order for bilingual counselors to be culturally and linguistically efficacious, they simply have to speak the language or identify as part of the Latine community. Our ground-breaking book attends to the need of providing adequate knowledge and resources to prepare culturally efficacious bilingual counselors. Given that our focus is to ensure access to materials in Spanish that address Latine mental health issues, another unique feature of our book is that it provides a variety of translations, resources, and case studies in both English and Spanish. Special emphasis was also given to bilingual supervision needs and included in a chapter with resources and appropriate translations. We hope that this critical work provides the profession a resource in which theory and practice intersect for our work with the Latine community.

Cette étude porte sur un corpus de récits écrits d'apprenants chinois du français première (FL2) et seconde langue étrangères (FL3) en milieu scolaire et de deux groupes témoins (locuteurs natifs du français et du chinois). Elle a trait à deux groupes d'apprenants de même L1 (le chinois) ayant des accès différents à la langue cible, le français (avec ou sans anglais L2). Les corpus témoins nous permettent de mieux comprendre comment le temps et l'aspect sont effectivement réalisés dans les langues maternelles respectives des locuteurs. Cet ouvrage vise à répondre aux questions suivantes: comment les apprenants chinois en FL2 et FL3 utilisent-ils les temps verbaux du passé à différents niveaux d'apprentissage ? Quels rôles jouent respectivement la L1 et la L2 dans l'apprentissage de la L3 ? L'analyse des données s'exerce sur les plans sémantique (l'hypothèse de l'aspect, Andersen & Shirai 1994) et fonctionnel (l'hypothèse du discours, Hopper 1979).

The Eastern Orthodox Churches in post-communist Eastern Europe are embroiled in long-running conflicts over ownership of territory, saints, sites, nations, and history. These often violent conflicts reflect political and national rivalries, most explicitly in former Yugoslavia and Ukraine. They are often understood as simplified ethnic-national tensions with religious overtones, but, as this book demonstrates such an assessment overlooks the deeper theological and historiographical framework. Nationalisation of the Sacred offers a detailed analysis of the theological backdrop to these conflicts. It analyses how various strands of Eastern Orthodoxy have adapted to the contemporary political context, a process where history, memory, and politics are transformed to fit the needs of rival nations and churches. The book provides an in-depth analysis of this process and the transformations in church-related conflicts in post-communist Montenegro, where the Serbian Orthodox Church has been pitted against a rival Montenegrin church and Montenegrin government. Additionally the book provides an up-to-date and unique analysis of Eastern Orthodox historiography, modern Serbian theology, religion in Montenegro more broadly, and the roots of the violent clash between Orthodox believers and the Montenegrin government in 2019-2021.

This edited volume fills a gap in this understudied niche of sport in Hong Kong by offering an interdisciplinary inquiry that acknowledges sport as a global force that shapes local culture, identity, and politics. As such this publication accommodates perspectives across sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, policy studies, and history to offer both a rich and complementary account of sporting culture in Hong Kong's socio-historical context. In the past, Orientalist myths told through movies and advertisements have produced an idealized image of Hong Kong as a city of hybridity, a place where "East meets West," with a futurist skyline that has inspired countless steampunk and sci-fi novels. However, the last few years have significantly changed the global perception of this Asian metropolis amidst the formation of a new geopolitical frontier. This volume is not so much a documentation of a peculiar sports system, but a timely discussion and analysis of Hong Kong as a postcolonial place in crisis mode.

Restrictively more than most, the collective image of Black women's identities are created by others. The glamorized life of Black women with light skin and the presumed likeness to whiteness has caused division within the Black community for years. Most often written and spoken of is the victimization of darker-hued women due to their skin tone. This thoughtful book explores colorism, which is a form of internalized racism, from the perspective of a light-skinned Black woman. By examining the social construction of race through the lens of Black Feminist Thought and Critical Race Theory the author uncovers a different narrative of colorism. Intimate accounts of skin tone stratification from Dr. Simpkins' own lived experience are shared as she engages in self-awareness throughout the entire book. A critical perspective of popular culture in movies offers insight into the origination of inscribed identifies of Black women. The traditional roles of Mammy, Sapphire and Jezebel are examined to further illustrate the perpetuation of colorism. The context of this work should be understood as groundbreaking to the field of colorism.

Our lives are tangled up in all kinds of suffering. The daily tasks of eating, working, clothing, and sheltering are tied to extreme ecological degradation, climate change, systems of oppression, colonial legacies of stolen land, and so much more. In the face of these complex, systemic challenges, and with the knowledge of our participation within them, what do we do? Particularly for educators - folks who are responsible both for reproducing and resisting the dominant culture - what does it look like to live with integrity in the midst of complicity? This book shares intimate narratives from 12 experienced, respected educators as they describe their understandings and experiences of integrity and complicity in today's world. Specifically, the educators highlighted here are academics working at the intersection of education, environment, and social change. Based on five years of research, their stories show the diverse ways people make sense of their lives and give readers opportunities to reflect on their own. Nora Timmerman argues that these stories collectively teach us how scale matters, to stop being one person, and to act anyway. Integrity comes not from ridding oneself of complicity but from critical learning, community accountability, cultivating interdependence, and strategic experimentation to create new worlds. This rhetorical biography illustrates the manner in which African American woman newspaper publisher and journalist Almena Davis Lomax sought to persuade her readers of her civil rights vision--through her Los Angeles Tribune editorials, columns, and other writings--from the 1940s through the mid-1970s, a period that witnessed phenomenal change in the area of civil rights for African Americans and other oppressed groups in the United States. While African American women journalists' contributions to the United States' long civil rights struggle via their writings and speeches--particularly those of the late nineteenth, early twentieth century and late twentieth century--have received greater attention in recent years, there is yet much to glean from the Black women journalists who built upon the path set by journalist-activist foremothers such as Mara W. Stewart, Mary Ann Shadd Cary, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Anna Julia Cooper and others--African American women journalists of the mid-twentieth century. This project contributes to the larger discourse on race, rhetoric and media by recovering the work of a little-known African American newspaper publisher and journalist of this era, thus adding to the body of knowledge concerning an often-overlooked group for not only journalism, media, communication, history, African American studies and women's studies scholars, but also for any reader with an interest in these areas.
