William Powell Frith (1819-1909), famous for his picture The Derby Day which normally hangs at Tate Britain, was the most celebrated painter of modern-life subjects in mid-Victorian England and the most popular British artist of that time. Published to mark the bicentenary of his birth and in association with an exhibition at the Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate, this richly illustrated volume of essays offers fresh and fascinating perspectives on Frith''s career and context. Despite dramatic shifts in taste with regard to Victorian painting during subsequent generations, Frith''s name has never been eclipsed, let alone forgotten ΓÇô unlike those of most of his genre-painter contemporaries ΓÇô as an introductory survey of critical responses to the artist''s work reveals. This provides a starting point for investigations, drawing on much new and original material, of three of Frith''s great panoramas of the Victorian world ΓÇô Life at the Sea-Side (Ramsgate Sands), The Derby Day and The Private View at the Royal Academy, 1881. Further contributions explore important but hitherto neglected aspects of Frith''s personal life and professional activity. Of significant biographical interest are studies of Frith''s close connections with Yorkshire (the county of his birth and also his first wife Isabelle''s) and his friendships with contemporary writers, notably the Sensation novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon. The artist''s less well-known historical genre pictures are reappraised, with focus on the early success of An English Merry-Making, a Hundred Years Ago, while the key role played by the print trade in the widespread dissemination of Frith''s images is examined in detail for the first time. An intriguing manifestation of Frith''s popularisation was the re-creation of certain of his most famous compositions as tableaux on the London stage, yet another fresh topic in this presentation of ''The People''s Painter''. Revisiting Frith and his achievement through new approaches, this book confirms his position as the pre-eminent visual chronicler of the mid-Victorian scene and the importance of his place in the history of British art.

This book explores the career of the St Ives artist Kate Nicholson, daughter of Ben and Winifred Nicholson, from her early landscapes, the still lifes painted in Cumberland and St Ives, the abstracts ΓÇô many of them inspired by her travels in Greece ΓÇô to the late works made on the Isle of Eigg in the Hebrides. It examines her artistic relationship with her mother, with whom she painted side by side in Cumberland and Scotland, and on their many Greek travels. It also discusses her creative relationship with her father with whom she lived in St Ives in the mid-1950s for two years, as well as her friendship with many of the St Ives artists and her role in the Penwith Society. Published to accompany the exhibition ''Kate Nicholson'' at Falmouth Art Gallery, this book is the first monograph on this highly talented artist who deserves to be better known. It illustrates many works from both public and private collections and draws on groundbreaking new research, together with the author''s experience of travelling with her on painting trips.

The Grosvenor School of Modern Art was founded by the influential teacher, painter and wood-engraver, Iain McNab, in 1925. Situated in London''s Pimlico district the school played a key role in the story of modern British printmaking between the wars. The Grosvenor School artists received critical acclaim in their time that continued until the late 1930s under the influence of Claude Flight who pioneered a revolutionary method of making the simple linocut to dynamic and colourful effect. Cyril Power, a lecturer in architecture at the school, and Sybil Andrews, the School Secretary, were two of Flight''s star students. Whilst incorporating the avant-garde values of Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism, the Grosvenor School printmakers brought their own unique interpretation of the contemporary world to the medium of linocut in images that are strikingly familiar to this day and are included in the print collections of the world''s major museums, including the British Museum, the MoMA New York and the Australian National Gallery. This new book which accompanies an exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery illustrates over 120 linocuts, drawings and posters by Grosvenor School artists and its thematic layout focuses on the key components which made up their dynamic and rhythmic visual imagery. For the first time, three Australian printmakers, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme - who played a major part in the Grosvenor School story - are included in a major museum exhibition outside of Australia.

This comprehensive book is both a biographical exploration of the early life of Mary Seton Watts and a survey of the pottery she designed. Her roots in Scotland, her artistic career and her marriage to the Victorian artist George Frederic Watts all influenced the design of the Grade 1 listed Cemetery Chapel at Compton and the art potteries which she then set up, both in Compton (The Potters'' Arts Guild) and in her home village near Inverness. The pottery at Compton was in business for more than fifty years, making terracotta garden ware, memorials and small decorative pieces. It remained open through two World Wars and a trade depression. This highly illustrated publication showcases the beautiful and individual pieces of pottery and is a fitting tribute to the ability of Mary Watts to coordinate both people and resources.
