This volume contains ten individual articles which focus on a variety of topics relating to Uzbek history, culture, and linguistics. Coordinated by professors Bakhtiyar Nazarov and Denis Sinor, it is a joint project between American scholars and those from the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic (now the Republic of Uzbekistan). At the time of its creation, it was intended to demonstrate the immense scholarly potential that could come from collaborations between the U.S. and Uzbek S.S.R. The essays it presents contain a vast breadth and depth of knowledge, and any scholar of Uzbek or Central Asian linguistics, history, or culture in general would be remiss to not read them.

In this book, Talant Mawkanuli presents 37 individual texts in Jungar Tuvan, as well as their English translations. These texts were recorded by the author in the Jungar-Altai region of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China from the years 1987 to 1995. Jungar Tuvan is spoken by only 4,000 people worldwide, and it is a dialect of the Turkic language Tuvan, itself only spoken by 200,000-300,000. As such, works such as this are vital for the recording and preservation of Jungar Tuvan. The texts within the book are arranged into five general types: tales of history and culture, tales of human life and personal experiences, folk tales, songs and blessings, and conversations. The texts are presented with line-by-line Jungar Tuvan in Latin transcription with English translation. For specialists in the field of Turkic linguistics or those simply interested in the lives of minorities in Inner Asia, this book is an excellent source for both cultural and linguistic information.

The Onomasticon Turcicum presents an enormous collection of scholarship conducted by the renowned Hungarian Turkologist László Rásonyi. In this book, Ildikó Bellér-Hann presents a transcription, translation, and analysis of the Tārīkh-i Khatā'ī, or, the "History of Cathay." Written in a little-known Turkic language referred to by scholars as "Türk 'Acämī," the Tārīkh-i Khatā'ī serves as an excellent source for linguistic study. Bellér-Hann expertly dissects the language of this manuscript in order to argue that its linguistic features represent a predecessor of modern Azerbaijani Turkic. William Rozycki's Mongol Elements in Manchu is a masterful work on the subject of Manchu and Mongolian linguistics. It identifies, analyzes, and categorizes occurrences of Mongol loan words in Manchu written documents in order to better understand the relationship between these two languages. In all, it examines 1,381 individual word correspondences and places them into eight individual categories: recent loans from Mongol to Manchu, early loans from Mongol to Manchu/Jurchen, ancient loans from Mongol to Tungus, pre-loan correspondences, loans from Manchu to Mongol, problematic cases, loans from Chinese to Mongol and Manchu, and dismissible cases. This reader contains a selection of materials, which range in time from the pre-literary language to contemporary items from newspapers. It includes examples taken from the literary language under Soviet rule and as Kyrgyz (Kirghiz) is used in the West and in China. The book is designed to present the reader with an understanding of both the variety of materials available in Kyrgyz and with the internal structure of the language. The material ranges in difficulty from primers to historical documents. Each text is presented as it originally appeared, followed by a literal English translation. In addition, comments on the style and content are included with each text. (The comments section is a combination of literary, linguistic, historical, grammatical, and sociolinguistic explanations and remarks.) Publication information for the texts proceeds each subsection (e.g., the oral tradition, early written documents, and toward modern Kyrgyz are all included in a larger section titled The Pre-literary Language). An explanation of the transliteration systems used in the book is also included.

This volume is a translation into English of one of three variant texts treating early Hungarian history. As the third chronicle, following the Pict Chronicle (1358-1370) and the Buda Chronicle (1473), it was written by Johannes de Thurocz (Thuroczy Janos) who lived from c. 1435 to 1490. An educated nobleman, Thuroczy was the first layman known to have written a book in the Kingdom of Hungary. The second and third variants are based upon its predecessor.
