This edition, the first of an anticipated twenty-one volumes, features a critical text with extensive text-critical introductions and commentaries. HBCE constructs an eclectic text, drawing from many manuscripts or placing entirely variant texts side by side. A common approach for critical editions of other ancient books, including the New Testament, the eclectic approach and scope is a first of its kind for the Hebrew Bible.

MacMullen uses excavation reports of hundreds of fourth-century sites to show how worship occurred in churches and their surrounding cemeteries: a religion that ordinary Christians, by far the majority, practiced in a different and largely forgotten second Church.
