The Healing Power of Art Why is there a misconception that artists are a little bit “crazy”? Does having an artistic temperament mean that creative people operate in a mental state different from the “norm”? And why is art often used as therapy for mental illnesses? Anyone who enjoys looking at art, or who finds comfort in art making while living in our high-tech, high-stress era, will be intrigued by this look at historical and contemporary artists whose work reflects the mental-wellness issues that each one has lived with. Through biographies of individual artists, readers will explore existing research and theories about the relationship between mental health and creativity. The artists' lives prompt topics like why substance abuse is found at high rates among artists, how we can learn about the mental health of artists who were diagnosed with now-obsolete terms like "melancholia," and in cases where a formal diagnosis was lacking, how artists are posthumously “diagnosed” by modern-day professionals. The artists discussed reflect a wide range of mental health topics, including anxiety and depression, schizophrenia, bipolar conditions, body dysmorphia, disordered eating, and PTSD, among others.

A book that will guide you when you are in the process of buying or appraising Sandwich glass is the most important tool you can own. This book is one of a series of guide books that describes every type of glass that was produced in Sandwich, Massachusetts. It uses the original plates of glass photos and the identification numbers form Volume 3 of The Glass Industry in Sandwich, a larger book by the same authors. (Volumes 3 and 4 are available, and Volumes 1 and 2 are in preparation.) This makes cross references much easier. In order to make this series of guides compact and light in weight, the photos from Volume 3 have been divided into two smaller guides. This one contains the complete chapters on witch balls, covered containers, toys (miniatures) and the creations of Nicholas Lutz. Another guide, available now, contains vases, colognes and stoppers. The extensive categorization and illustration of Sandwich glass should make this guide valuable for field use.The prices in this guide reflect the market at the time of publication. They will be periodically updated in a separate price guide available from the publishers.
Take a literary tour of Maryland's Eastern Shore.Originally published in 1944 as part of the prestigious Rivers of America series, this second edition brings an American classic back into print and into the hands of a new generation.Author Hulbert Footner tells the story of Maryland’s Eastern Shore through his colorful narratives of 17 fascinating rivers. His story begins from the day European settlers landed and encountered the Indigenous peoples and continues to the early 20th century. Each river has its own story, character, and beauty, lovingly described during his travels. Footner writes in vivid, glowing prose about the Eastern Shore's people, customs, towns, and houses. He speaks of its politics and economics. The region is rich with American history, from the Revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War to the trade of enslaved Africans and the oyster wars over its great natural resource. And Footner captures it all. Text and illustrations are faithfully reproduced from the original edition, augmented by a biographical sketch written by Footner’s granddaughter and a foreword by noted nature writer Tom Horton. This book is a must-have for those devoted to the character and culture of this coastal region, with its eclectic small towns and pristine natural beauty.
With more than 200 photographs and specifications for 32 watches, this book provides a comprehensive history of one of Germany's finest watchmakers and its timepieces. Since its founding in 1845, A. Lange and Sohne has been at the core of fine watchmaking. Wanting to create perfectly timed watches that did not require remachining, innovative watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange established a tradition of precise workmanship that evolved through generations of the family into a production facility of haute horlogerie, handcrafting a mere 5,500 pieces a year. From the rare 1A-quality works that command top dollars at auctions to its more affordable and modern Lange 1, Arkade, and Saxonia models, the company's high-quality timepieces and the people behind the brand are detailed. From rare and historical pocket watches to the company's line of modern wristwatches, all conserve the philosophy of a man instrumental to the evolution of mechanical timekeeping.
