The 1000th anniversary of the death of Emperor Henry II has instigated celebrations throughout the city and archbishopric of Bamberg . A high point in the commemorative programme is the exhibition "1000 Years Ago" at Bamberg Historical Museum in the Alte Hofhaltung - a special exhibition that does not focus exclusively on the emperor, but takes equal account of Empress Cunigunde and the people around her at that time.
An altar is a table or flat-topped block used as the focus for a religious ritual, especially for making sacrifices or offerings to a deity (Oxford Languages). Whether or not what Christians use during service today is allowed to be an altar is a point of contention between the denominations. However, since the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, the altar has been at the centre of many redesigns of Catholic church spaces. For this they like to take the early Church as an example. In fact, the Council points to the "norm of the Fathers". But how can this be reconciled with the widespread opinion that Christianity initially knew no cult and no sacrifices, but only loved feasts and meals of sinners, held in house churches? It was not until later, since the time of Emperor Constantine, that a real state cult with sacrifices, altars and magnificent sacred spaces developed, and the Church suffers from this historical burden to this day. But is this really true? Or are they not rather clichés that need to be critically questioned? This volume carves a few paths through the jungle and arrives at results that are as surprising as they are stimulating.
In 1521 Jakob Fugger laid the foundation-stone for the existence of the Fuggerei in eternity, with a deed of foundation. In fact, the Fuggerei still offers people in need from Augsburg a safe home - for today 88 cent annual rent and three prayers a day. During a tour through the settlement, the guide explains how the Fuggerei has been able to fulfil its mission as a foundation for 500 years. The diverse contents of the stations are presented clearly and vividly - from architecture, to historical and comtemporary life in the Fuggerei to the future of their foundation idea. The volume is generously equipped with pictures and illustrations. Famous guest authors comment on interesting social and cultural-historical topics of the Fuggerei. A service section, a folding map and graphics provide quick orientation. Deepened texts are delivering answers to frequently asked questions.
