While both the Latin Primer and the Shorter Latin primer are elementary compendiums this book 'The Public School Grammar' is a much higher work. Benjamin Hall Kennedy said this book was written simply as a development of the famous Latin Primers. In general principals, all Kennedy's books are the same but this book is three times as large with the subject matter being arranged more systematically. Examples have been increased and the illustrations are wider with a large amount of information added. A grammar of this size will set you on the path of becoming a Latin scholar. Kennedy's Latin books have acquired a firm place in English culture: They are not simply excellent textbooks on the Latin language but are symbols of what schoolchildren have endured and enjoyed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. • - Original Edition, Republished in Larger and Clearer Typeface
    af H. G. Liddell
    647,95 kr.

This is the abridged version of 1909 edition, often called the "Little Liddell". Simon Wallenberg has enlarged the typeface for easier reading and except for this improvement the publishers have left the original work intact. A Greek-English Lexicon. is the standard lexicographical work of the Ancient Greek language. Based on the earlier Handwörterbuch der griechischen Sprache by the German lexicographer Franz Passow it has served as the basis for all later lexicographical work on the ancient Greek language. No student of Classical Greek or indeed New Testament Greek could possibly be without this Lexicon. Although it is an abridgement of a larger work, it is by no means incomplete and in some respects is a better option than the larger editions. If you study the New Testament Koine Greek, or study Classical Greek, this book will be invaluable to you. The entries are succinct yet informative, and each entry will tell you how a word has been used in different periods of Greek literature. Therefore, if one word has been employed in different uses in Homeric literature, compared to the New Testament, this Lexicon will let you know. This edition of the Liddell and Scott is a comprehensive lexicon of the classical Greek and remains the best lexicon for the New Testament, as the definitions offered in the Little Liddell are so precise you will rarely find them to be wrong. It was edited by Henry George Liddell and Robert Scott, It is now conventionally referred to as Liddell & Scott. The first editor of the LSJ, Henry George Liddell, was Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and the father of Alice Liddell, the eponymous Alice of the writings of Lewis Carroll.

Mary Heaton Vorse or Mary Heaton Vorse O'Brien (October 11, 1874 - 1966) was a U.S. suffragette, journalist, labor activist, theatre patron, and feminist. She became one of the most popular writers of women's fiction in the U.S. As a labor journalist and war correspondent, she traveled to Lenin's Moscow and Hitler's Germany. She was outspokenly active in peace and social justice causes, such as women's suffrage, civil rights, pacifism (specifically including opposition to World War I), socialism, child labor, infant mortality, labor disputes, and affordable housing. She was instrumental in forming the Women's Peace Party in January 1915 in Washington, D.C. Newspapers and journals she wrote for included the New York Post, New York World, McCall's, Harper's Weekly, Atlantic Monthly, The Masses, New Masses, New Republic, and McClure's Magazine, as well as various news services. She participated in and reported on the Lawrence textile strike, the steel strike of 1919, the textile workers strike of 1934, and coal strikes in Harlan County, Kentucky. She was also a popular novelist for several decades and published poetry as well. Her writing helped her raise three children without a husband. "I love my golden wings and I want to fly right into the sun until they are all draggled and battered, ' wrote Vorse in 1896. A rebel at a young age, she fled her wealthy New England family and settled in Greenwich Village in the early 1900s. Vorse was intimately involved with the political, cultural, and feminist leaders of the Left. Her commitment to feminism led to her presence at women's rallies in Europe and America; her unique contribution to the journalism of her time was to give consistent attention to the special concerns of women and their role in the labor movement.

  • af Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston

As part of China's 2008 Olympic welcome to visitors Xiaomina Press, presents this book about the last emperor of China. This book is essential reading for all visitors to China The Author Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston was a Scottish diplomat and the tutor of Puyi, the last emperor of China. Johnston was eye witness Chinese events in the crucial years of the 1920s and 1930s. Johnston was the only foreigner in history to be allowed inside the inner court of the Qing Dynasty. The author carried high imperial titles and lived in both the Forbidden City and the New Summer Palace. In 1934, Johnston looked for a residence in Scotland to retire to. He found a house on Eilean Righ, a small island in Loch Craignish, some 9 miles (15 km) NW of Lochgilphead. He moved there with his enormous library, which included a Chinese Encylopaedia in 1734 volumes and a complete collection of Buddhist scriptures in 1500 volumes. Twilight in the Forbidden City is very much a history of an entire period and not an exclusive portrait of the last Emperor of China. Twilight in the Forbidden City is prefaced by the Emperor Hsüan-T'ung himself in the year 1931 Chosen by Dowager Empress Cixi while on her deathbed, Puyi ascended the throne at age 2 years 10 months in December 1908 following his uncle's death on November 14. Puyi's introduction to emperorship began when palace officials arrived at his family household to take him. Puyi screamed and resisted as the officials ordered the eunuchs to pick him up. His wet-nurse, Wen-Chao Wang, was the only one who could console him, and therefore accompanied Puyi to the Forbidden City. Puyi would not see his real mother again for six years. Puyi's upbringing was hardly conducive to the raising of a healthy, well-balanced child. Overnight, he was treated as a god and unable to behave as a child. The adults in his life, save his wet-nurse Mrs. Wang, were all strangers, remote, distant, and unable to discipline him. Wherever he went, grown men would kneel to the floor in a ritual kow-tow, averting their eyes until he passed.

  • - Complete Directional Guide to the Pilgrimage to Santiago with Accommodation
    af Jaffa Raza
    351,95 kr.

Use this book to walk a medieval path off the beaten track. This Village to Village guide enables the walker to follow the 1,000 year-old pilgrimage footpath to Santiago de Compostela and to re-enact Europe's most historic journey. This guide is recommended by the Catholic Church to those making the pilgrimage to Santiago on foot. It is a detailed directional guide for the 800 km footpath in Spain. The book contains listings of budget accommodation and other practical information. In the middle ages, a network of foot paths carried pilgrims to the shrine at Santiago from every country. The roads went over the Pyrenees and into Spain, either by way of the great monastery at Roncesvalles, or via that of Santa Cristina and the Somport Pass. Santiago, far away under the mists and Atlantic skies of Galicia, all woods and water in a Celtic landscape of menhirs and lost gods, exerted an appeal that was infinitely pre Christian. The route to Santiago was a Roman trade-route. It was nicknamed by travellers la voje ladee, the Milky Way. It was the road under the stars. The pale arm of the Milky Way stretched out and pointed the way to the edge of the known world: to Cape Finisterre The vast majority of those who walk The Way of St James today, are not experienced walkers at all. Many have never done any serious walking in their lives. and many will never do anything like it again. Most long-distance footpaths avoid not only large towns but even quite small villages as well; the Way of Saint James, on the other hand, because of its historic origins and the need for shelter, deliberately seeks them out. It passes through ancient places rich in art and architectural masterpieces

  • - an Anglo Indian Heritage Book
    af Cedric Dover
    317,95 kr.

A belief in Eugenics was widespread in the early half of the last centenary and amongst its prominent believers were George Bernard Shaw, Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. This iniquitous social philosophy supposed that Northern Europeans were superior in civilization to such races as Indians. Anglo Indians who were of mixed blood were considered, even more inferior since they inherited the worst characteristics of both races. Anglo Indians came under attack from government scientists who wrote papers on Eugenics and used the Anglo Indians as examples how the human race could be degraded by intermarriage. Cedric Dover's book Cimmerii was written as defence against this racist attack on India's Anglo Indians. A remarkable pioneering book written before the Second World War, it thoroughly disproved the eugenics theory by recounting the achievements of the Anglo Indian race. It is a shame this brilliant book did to find its way to Europe after it was published, as it would have contributed in discrediting the pseudo science of eugenics. The belief in Eugenics led to the killing, institutionalising and outright genocide of races perceived as inferior or undesirable. The book would have defended the Jews who like the Anglo Indians were deemed a threat to racial purity. After the defeat of Nazi Germany, many ideas about "racial hygiene" were publicly renounced by politicians and members of the scientific community. But the work of Cedric Dover will forever stand out, as the work of one brave man who stood up and defended his small Anglo Indian community in a little book, and in doing so, struck the first blow against an evil that was to sweep through Europe a decade later. Cimmerii? Or Eurasians and Their Future by Cedric Dover is the fourth book in the Anglo Indian Heritage series. The Others are: Herbert Alick Stark 'Hostages To India Britain's Betrayal in India: The Story of the Anglo Indian Community These are the Anglo Indians by Reginald Maher. The books are called the Anglo Indian Heritage books as they chronicle the rich and colourful history of the Anglo Indian Community. This small community has had outstanding achievements at every level of society for hundreds of years but that record of achievement has been hidden, passed over or co-opted as British and Indian History. These Books are an attempt to fairly represent the history of the community by works by Anglo Indians themselves.

  • af James Reginald Maher

Reginald Maher's 'These Are the Anglo Indians' is the second book in the Anglo Indian Heritage series. The author tells the little known story of Anglo Indian history. How this small community adapted, in the face of difficulties and survived and helped shape the destiny of the British in India. The Portuguese came to India just over 500 years ago. The Dutch, French and the British soon followed, attracted by the famed riches of India, Europeans married local people. These unions resulted in the birth of a new community which later came to be known as Anglo-Indians. Reginald Maher narrates this 500 year old history and brings the achievements of a number of Anglo Indians and their significant contributions to Indian society. This remarkable story of a small community is a story of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. The books are called the Anglo Indian Heritage books as they chronicle the rich and colorful history of the Anglo Indian Community. This small community has had outstanding achievements at every level of society for hundreds of years, but that record of achievement has been hidden, passed over or co-opted as British and Indian History. The Heritage Books are an attempt to fairly represent the history of the community by works by Anglo Indians themselves. These books are a record of the history of the community and in the process celebrate the forgotten Heroes of the Community and their achievements. The Other books in the series are: (1) Britain's Betrayal in India: The Story of the Anglo Indian Community by Frank Anthony (2) Hostages to India: The Life story of The Anglo Indian Race by Herbert Alick Stark (3) Cimmerii? • - OR The Life Story of the Anglo Indian Race
    af Herbert Alick Stark
    341,95 kr.

This classical book brilliantly portrays the history of the Anglo Indian community and presents a magnificent historical reconstruction. It is an enduring work on Anglo Indians, from their darkest to finest hour. The author pulls no punches in this exceptionally well researched book and shows the hidden part of Anglo Indian life over a period of 500 years. The book is an outstanding testament against the colonial racism of the period and the courage of a small community of people. The book is a good read, containing chapters which entertain as well as inform, as when the author describes the ladies of the "fishing fleet" who would arrive from England to India to find husbands, which resulted in the great Indian marriage bazaar in Calcutta. The book describes the thriving and vibrant Anglo Indian Community and their subsequent impoverishment due to various administrative acts by the East India Company who saw Anglo Indian success as a threat. It chronicles the various measures the community took to obtain justice from England by sending emissaries from India to lobby parliament. The others three Non Fiction titles in the Anglo Indian Heritage series are: (1) 'These Are the Anglo-Indians' by Reginald Maher - (2) Frank Anthony: The Story of the Anglo Indian Community - (3) 'Cimmeri?
