"This unusual volume follows the doctrinal structure of the classic Puritan catechism, expanding each doctrinal point not with exposition, as is customary, but with many factual stories well selected by the author from a wide range of sources. Thus such subjects as Providence, Prayer and The Ten Commandments are illuminated with telling and sometimes fascinating narratives. First published in 1828, and passing through many editions in the last century, the book has been revised for greater usefulness today."
Young Lady's Guide by Harvey Newcomb (1803-1863) was first published in 1839, and went through numerous editions, being the most popular of the 178 books written by the author. William Taylor was one of the very few men asked to deliver a second set of lectures at the Yale Lectures on Preaching. These were delivered in 1886 and were published, upon great demand, early the next year. In his own words: "My aim has simply been to put the preachers in the environment of their times, to bring out the characteristics by which they were distinguished, and to give point to such lessons from their work as may be useful in our own age." Taylor begins with John Knox, Andrew Melville, Alexander Henderson, Samuel Rutherford, Robert Leighton and many more. Very rare!

CHRIST IN SONG: Hymns of Immanuel from all ages is a unique compilation of the best hymns from every branch of the Christian Faith. Philip Schaff, best known for his massive History of the Christian Church, has compiled hymns that center upon the Person and Work of Jesus Christ.Charles Hodge said, "After all, apart from the Bible, the best antidote to all these false theories of the person and work of Christ, is such a book as Dr. Schaff's "Christ in Song." The hymns contained in that volume are of all ages and from all churches. They set forth Christ as truly God, as truly man, as one person, as the expiation for our sins, as our intercessor, saviour, and king, as the supreme object of love, as the ultimate ground of confidence, as the all-sufficient portion of the soul. We want no better theology and no better religion than are set forth in these hymns. They were indited by the Holy Spirit in the sense that the thoughts and feelings which they express, are due to his operations on the hearts of his people."
This is the third and final volume of Dr. Spencer's marvelous sermons. Each of these messages was preached at the Lord's Table, and sets forth the glory and the majesty of "Christ and Him crucified." Gardiner Spring introduced this volume which was first published seven years after the death of Dr. Spencer.
Robert Hawker was a favorite of C.H. Spurgeon because he delighted to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ in all his writings. This is the first volume of his magnificent New testament Commentary and covers all four Gospels. Of him Spurgeon said: "If you want something full of marrow and fatness, cheering to your own hearts, and likely to help you in giving your hearers rich expositions, buy Hawker''s Commentaries."
This volume is THE LIFE & LETTERS OF ELIZABETH PRENTISS who was the author of "Stepping Heavenward", one of the most popular books of the latter 19th century. Philip Schaff is best known for his massive "History of the Christian Church". In 1869 Schaff took his love for Christ and the Church and turned his efforts to a compilation of the great hymns of the Church down through the ages. His focus was upon one thing: JESUS CHRIST. Hear his words from the Preface, "Christ is the center of sacred art as well as of theology and religion... From Him music has drawn its highest inspiration, and Handel transcended himself when he made 'Messiah' his theme. The sweetest lyrics of Zion in all ages celebrate the events of His life and the boundless wealth of mercy and peace that is treasured up in His person and work for every believer. The hymns of JESUS are the Holy of holies in the temple of sacred poetry."Schaff concludes his Preface with these words: "May He, whose holy name shines on every page, own and bless this labor of love to His own glory and praise, and to the joy and comfort of His people; animating their songs in the house of their pilgrimage, until they adore Him face to face in the chorus of Redemption everlasting."
This volume contains a sketch of the author written by a close friend of many years, and twenty Practical/Experimental Sermons preached in his regular pulpit ministry in Brooklyn, NY. Those who have appreciated his volumes, "A Pastor's Sketches", will not be disappointed when they read these marvelous sermons.
