Many of its early members had just arrived from York County, South Carolina area. A number of these early transplanted South Carolinians now lie buried in the Sugg's Creek Cemetery. Information to be found with in this book: a short account of the organization of the first Presbyterian Church at Sugg's Creek Meeting House with a brief notice of the origin of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at this place. It was founded by a Quaker named John Fenwick in 1665. This was the first English settlement established in west portion of the state of New Jersey following the English defeat of the Dutch in 1664. It had become the first Quaker colony in North America, predating any settlements in Philadelphia. In 1665, John Fenwick was involved in a financial dispute when acquiring these lands from Lord Berkeley. Lord Berkeley had also sold lands to Edward Billinge in New Jersey. The final outcome of the dispute was that for financial considerations Fenwick was granted a tenth of West Jersey.

This book is a chronological list of Quaker immigrants who registered with the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends, upon their arrival in Philadelphia. This meeting house is the largest of all Quaker meeting in the province. The information is based on the certificates of removal from the Meetings of Friends of which they were members in other countries and other colonies. A large proportion of the Quakers who immigrated into the Province of Pennsylvania took up residence in Philadelphia. Of the nineteen monthly meetings established in Pennsylvania prior to 1750, the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting easily ranks first in the number of certificates received. As a rule, the certificates give the following information: name, date of certificate, former place of residence, former meeting, date of receipt, and other details of quaint and useful interest.

This transcription of these records provides an accurate description of the industrial and social life in the colony. It provides specific information valuable to the genealogists. For example, the sale of the moveable property of John Andrew dated 11 Oct. 1783 (who, one finds from other records, died intestate) shows many sales to "the widow," not named. The widow, however, signs the account of the sales as Deborah Andrew. The "true inventory of the estate of James McCallister," dated 30 July 1771, shows among other items of personal property, 276 acres of land and was signed by Neil McCallister. Although the minutes of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions are missing for this period, we have an approximate date of death for James. Since Neil McCallister's inventory is dated 1 March 1775, we have a time frame for his death; his inventory is signed by Mary McCallister. One learns to wring out every bit of the information in every record. This volume is extremely valuable since it lists many names not found in the surviving court minutes and deed books.

At the turn of the eighteenth century most Virginia landowners were still self-sufficient small farmers holding a few hundred acres of land. The appendix in this book is the closest thing to a census for the years 1704-1705. The appendix is made up of over 7,000 Rent Rolls of individual landholders, listing them by county with the numbers of acres they had.

It lies in the far Western portion of the state surrounded by Calloway, Graves, McCracken, Trigg, Lyon and Livingston counties along with being a stone's throw from the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. Due to its geography, settlers began showing up in this area around 1818, just after the Jackson Purchase of these lands from the Chickasaw Indians. The citizens of the county were sympatric to the Confederate side during the Civil War. Many of her residents belonged to the famous Kentucky Orphan Brigade. This book has many of the usual topics being discussed: early history, creation of the county, early settlements, government, churches, economics, early hangings and etc.. Over half of the book is devoted to biographical sketches of these early residents of the county.
