    From the Preface: "e;The material in this book is based on notes for a course which I gave several times at Brown University. The target of the course was juniors and seniors majoring in applied mathematics, engineering and other sciences. My basic goal in the course was to teach standard methods, or what I regard as a basic "e;bag of tricks"e;. In my opinion the material contained here, for the most part, does not depart widely from traditional subject matter. One such departure is the discussion of discrete linear systems. Besides being interesting in its own right, this topic is included because the treatment of such systems leads naturally to the use of discrete Fourier series, discrete Fourier transforms, and their extension, the Z-transform. On making the transition to continuous systems we derive their continuous analogues, viz., Fourier series, Fourier transforms, Fourier integrals and Laplace transforms. A main advantage to the approach taken is that a wide variety of techniques are seen to result from one or two very simple but central ideas. Above all, this course is intended as being one which gives the student a "e;can-do"e; frame of mind about mathematics. Students should be given confidence in using mathematics and not be made fearful of it. I have, therefore, forgone the theorem-proof format for a more informal style. Finally, a concerted effort was made to present an assortment of examples from diverse applications with the hope of attracting the interest of the student, and an equally dedicated effort was made to be kind to the reader."e;

    The present book builds upon an earlier work of J. Hale, "e;Theory of Func- tional Differential Equations"e; published in 1977. We have tried to maintain the spirit of that book and have retained approximately one-third of the material intact. One major change was a complete new presentation of lin- ear systems (Chapters 6~9) for retarded and neutral functional differential equations. The theory of dissipative systems (Chapter 4) and global at- tractors was completely revamped as well as the invariant manifold theory (Chapter 10) near equilibrium points and periodic orbits. A more complete theory of neutral equations is presented (see Chapters 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10). Chapter 12 is completely new and contains a guide to active topics of re- search.     The first edition of this book was originally published in 1985 under the ti- tle "e;Probabilistic Properties of Deterministic Systems. "e; In the intervening years, interest in so-called "e;chaotic"e; systems has continued unabated but with a more thoughtful and sober eye toward applications, as befits a ma- turing field. This interest in the serious usage of the concepts and techniques of nonlinear dynamics by applied scientists has probably been spurred more by the availability of inexpensive computers than by any other factor. Thus, computer experiments have been prominent, suggesting the wealth of phe- nomena that may be resident in nonlinear systems. In particular, they allow one to observe the interdependence between the deterministic and probabilistic properties of these systems such as the existence of invariant measures and densities, statistical stability and periodicity, the influence of stochastic perturbations, the formation of attractors, and many others. The aim of the book, and especially of this second edition, is to present recent theoretical methods which allow one to study these effects. We have taken the opportunity in this second edition to not only correct the errors of the first edition, but also to add substantially new material in five sections and a new chapter.

    It is a distinct pleasure to have the opportunity to introduce Professor Malliavin's book to the English-speaking mathematical world. In recent years there has been a noticeable retreat from the level of ab- straction at which graduate-level courses in analysis were previously taught in the United States and elsewhere. In contrast to the practices used in the 1950s and 1960s, when great emphasis was placed on the most general context for integration and operator theory, we have recently witnessed an increased emphasis on detailed discussion of integration over Euclidean space and related problems in probability theory, harmonic analysis, and partial differential equations. Professor Malliavin is uniquely qualified to introduce the student to anal- ysis with the proper mix of abstract theories and concrete problems. His mathematical career includes many notable contributions to harmonic anal- ysis, complex analysis, and related problems in probability theory and par- tial differential equations. Rather than developed as a thing-in-itself, the abstract approach serves as a context into which special models can be couched. For example, the general theory of integration is developed at an abstract level, and only then specialized to discuss the Lebesgue measure and integral on the real line. Another important area is the entire theory of probability, where we prefer to have the abstract model in mind, with no other specialization than total unit mass. Generally, we learn to work at an abstract level so that we can specialize when appropriate.

    For the first two editions of the book Probability (GTM 95), each chapter included a comprehensive and diverse set of relevant exercises.
