In the early 20th Century, German educators Dr. H. Steiglitz and Rev. Michael Gatterer, S.J. developed a method of teaching the Catechism to children inspired by Our Lord's teaching in parables. By first appealing to the imagination of the child through storytelling or pictures, the lesson is more easily absorbed and understood. This method, which came to be known as The Munich Method, was brought to the United States through the work of Rev. George Dennerle, who here presents an English translation and adaptation of one of the key manuals of this movement, Augustine Gruber's Elementarkatechesen.
In this single volume the first two of Mother Mary Eaton's books are combined in one. The Little Ones is, as the subtitle explains, "A Course of Religious Instruction for Children up to Eight Years." The Faith For Children then takes up where that book leaves off, presenting the Catholic faith for children ages seven to fourteen. After a lifetime of experience in teaching children as well as training teachers, in these books Mother Eaton gives mothers and catechists a solid framework, with general suggestions for methodology as well as stories effective for teaching concepts.
Those who frequently avail themselves of these Sacraments will appreciate this devotional aid which presents a fresh perspective. Here Mother Loyola's characteristic child-like devotion is a refreshing breeze in a still room. The examination of conscience found in this manual is particularly helpful in rooting out our hidden faults and passions.
