In the last surviving cities of a ruined world, the concept of "woman" has been forgotten to history. Those unfortunate enough to lack a Y chromosome live as second-class citizens in a world dominated by mascs.Ember is Y negative. He is scorned, bullied, abused by every masc he encounters, at work and at the gym. Not even his Y negative roommate cuts him any slack. He wants so desperately to be accepted as a masc that he'd rather buy black market testosterone than food. Something's gotta give-he needs a change in his life, but has no idea how to find it.Jess is a masc with a passion for studying the recovery of their devastated world. His boyfriend is pressuring him for more commitment, and his father expects him to take over the family business. He can't wait to get away from civilization for his seasonal research out in the wild. When Jess offers Ember a job, their lives collide in the isolated wasteland, and their initial attraction turns into a relationship that horrifies those around them. Soon their struggle to stay together and to be who they are turns into a fight for their lives.
You think you know the story - prince gets cursed, girl meets Beast, they fall in love and live happily ever after. If only it was that simple. But dating is tough even in the best of circumstances.Ever since the fateful day when we let that horrible Good Fairy into the castle, our lives have been on hold. When she turned our bad-tempered prince into a Beast, she lumped us, his loyal servants, into the curse too, just because she assumed his rude behavior was our fault. Theodore the butler should never have let her inside, and the rest of us should have helped bar the door. Now Theodore is an armchair, and we're all trying to carry on our duties as a piano, a coat rack, a bookcase and the like. At least we have Robert to clean up the pink sparkles piling in the corners from the Good Fairy's curse, since he's a mop now. We know we just need the Beast to fall in love to break the spell. We're all doing whatever we can to help him find True Love, one visitor at a time, hoping the right person finally comes along--but will the Beast ever learn to love?
For three years, my four friends and I have searched through a land that was created by magic hundreds of years ago, existing just outside our space and time. We've seen incredibly strange, beautiful, and terrifying things in Chimera. We've been on a quest in that world, trying to find out why so many magic beings have disappeared from there. Thank goodness for my friend Brady's science-techno-geek brain - it's come in handy fighting monsters, following bizarre clues, and interpreting prophecies of doom.Unfortunately, his super-brain may not be enough to stop the wild magic leaking into our world. It's causing devastating storms and freaky things like birds flying backwards and toads falling from the sky.For the record, when I found out we were going to start searching through an abandoned town, I thought we'd have it easy for once. Shows what I know.Magically booby-trapped houses are way more dangerous than monsters. No lie. I only hope we survive. That's not a sure thing, with acid-spitting doors, carnivorous books, and quicksand floors! And somewhere in the middle of all this, I've got to figure out what the heck is up with Brady and my best friend Olivia. Because all their snarking at each other is going to drive me crazy!
Lions and tigers and bears really don't scare me. Not after goblins and dragons and trolls. I've seen strange, beautiful, and terrifying things in Chimera - the land created by magic hundreds of years ago, existing just outside our space and time. Where myths and legends from our world moved to be safe from their deadliest enemy; the Mundane. You know, regular human beings, like me and my friends. This year we're exploring the forest, though we've sworn not to enter the Dark Side. Lucky thing, since there's a dragon in there, and Doug keeps insisting he's going to ride it. Even though he's been warned it'll just eat him. So now I get to worry about man-eating dragons, the psycho-boy the bullies are trying to recruit, and the monsters that just keep getting creepier. We're all feeling the strain as things get worse and worse, especially my friend Faith. She's more scared than the rest of us combined! And the fact that magic has begun to spill into our world? That may be the most frightening thing of all...
Tarragon isn't your typical fairy. He scoffs at gossamer wings and he never, ever sparkles. Plus, he's much more interested in common folk than in anyone wearing a crown. All he wants to do is enjoy good food and good parties, but he can't quite resist sparring with his cousin Marjoram, a typical Good Fairy if there ever was one. Against his better judgment, Tarry becomes the reluctant defender of the ordinary people Marj is trampling underfoot in her efforts to help the royalty. That includes people like Jack, a goatherd stuck on the opposite side of a mass of thorns from his true love Emmy, a maid in Sleeping Beauty's castle. Or Catherine, who has no desire to marry a very un-charming prince just because her shoe size matches some girl he danced with. Or Anthony, whose youngest sister Beauty got involved with a great and terrible Beast.Tarry has to set down his supper, brush up on his magic and his arguments, and try for once to wrangle some kind of Happily Ever After out of the mess.
Maybe you've heard a tale about twelve princesses who danced their shoes to pieces. That was only part of our story.Talya would tell you how dark and frightening the cursed forest and enchanted lake were. Vira would be too busy looking after all of us to tell you many details, and Mina would try to give you every fact and figure, even though magic is rarely so logical. Each of my eleven sisters would tell the story a bit differently. And Dastan--well, he'd write a ballad. Or maybe a love song.As for me, I'm the storyteller, so I'm giving you my version. It's about my sisters and me, our father, twelve princes and a cursed country--about a series of misguided champions, one even more misguided fairy godmother, and a great deal of dancing. It's about twelve trapped princesses who decided to take control of their story.I'm Lyra, the ninth princess, and this is how I tell the tale.
Forrest can't fathom this prickly, knife-wielding girl who so unceremoniously turns up in his family's barn one morning. His life has never been this exciting. Karina can't make herself trust the strangely hospitable villagers on this island she's now stuck on, and when they claim they can knit spells into their garments, that doesn't help. She knows magic exists, but that's just ridiculous. And no one can understand why the chickens have suddenly started laying gilded eggs, or why the horse is talking in rhyming couplets. When the inexplicable magic goes from mere bad poetry to actual threats, when dancing becomes dangerous and the wrong thought could cause disaster, the only answers are in the past Karina is fleeing-and the only way to survive is for the knife-wielder to trust the spellspinner.
