In the spring of 1933, exactions of old age forced William Trenckmann to sell his newspaper to the National Weeklies of Minnesota but he remained its editor in all mat-ters pertaining to Texas. Here the contents of his newspaper series on his beloved Austin County are reproduced in book form for the lovers of Texas today.
This work of singular historic importance was originally published in 1840 in German. For the first time the book is now presented in English and gives detailed insights into the world of the Republic of Texas in 1840.
THE HEDGEHOG AND THE MOLE.(from Fables and Parables by Lessing)The Hedgehog, when he found that the winter drew near, asked the Mole to spare him a little place in his hole, that he might be protected from the cold. The Mole agreed; but no sooner had the Hedgehog gained admittance, than he began to make himself comfortable, and to spread himself out, so that his host pricked himself every moment, now here, now there, with the hard bristles of his new guest. The poor Mole now perceived the consequences of his rashness; protested that this was quite intolerable to him, and in short desired the Hedgehog to depart, as his small dwelling could not possibly contain them both. But the Hedgehog laughed, and said, “Whoever is displeased with his situation, let him depart! I, for my part, am well contented, and remain.”Reflect first, whom thou wilt take into thy intimate companionship; if he prove an unsociable person, thou mayst then be obliged to make room to thine own damage.
Management science has become like theology, dominated by respected gurus and a body of accepted teachings. However, the pressures of a rapidly changing business environment are making managers and leaders more and more aware of the need for a broader scope of ideas to help in decision-making and the encouragement of innovation. Here I have attempted to combine conventional theories of management with concepts and writers outside of the conventional and accepted orthodoxy at the danger of being burned at the management stake for heresy. Yet, the original source of this work on strategic management was inspired by the need to provide students of the subject at bachelor and masters level with a basic script to guide their studies and was first published as a series of four books. This was of course accompanied by face-to-face lectures and many discussions and term papers. It is the author's intention to here provide a simple framework that managers and leaders as well as students and teachers of management can use as a basis for provoking thought and intention. It was because of many requests to provide the four sections in the form of one book as a reader for managers and others interested in strategy that inspired me to produce this reader's edition.
From the original fly leaf: "A distinguished American statesman and member of the bar, known chiefly heretofore as the Secretary of Commerce and Labor in the Cabinet of President Taft, as director in important enterprises, and as counsel for various corporations and individuals, here makes his bow as author (at the fine age of nearly 88) of a good book giving his recollections of life as it was lived, and war as it was waged, in the days of 1861 to 1865 during the conflict between the States. A penetrating pen-picture of things and places that few persons living today have experienced for themselves, and that still fewer are now capable of recollecting, Mr. Nagel's book also takes the happy reader to the Germany of student days, where as a young man the author entered the University of Berlin, which later was to confer on him the honorary degree as Doctor of Political Science. Known not less for his good works than for his great accomplishments, the present modest memoir will afford the reader both information and pleasure, and put in permanent form a record of days and ways that will not come again." This edition has been augmented with copious footnotes and illustrations to assist the modern reader to understand better the context of the time.
