Tales of The Old-Timers - A History of Lexington records small portions of life in Lexington, Ohio, over the last two centuries. The interesting words of early writers are used just as they put them to paper. The stories are based simply on facts dug up by the author and written down with only his own understanding of times past and the perspective of old-timers used as a guide. In some cases, information supplied from fading memories may have been embellished or remembered incorrectly by the old-timers, but it provides a rich tapestry of local Lexington history

This book, Johnny Appleseed in a Rich Land, explores the original testimony and memories of the early settlers of Richland County, Ohio, who considered themselves neighbors and friends ofJohn Chapman, a living, breathing personwho became known as Johnny Appleseed. The problem is not so much that too little has been written about him but that too much has been written - layer after layer, generation after generation, fantasy after fantasy. To find the truest picture of the man, the author looked for the people who knew him, who met him, and remembered him as accurately as they could. The purpose of this book is to present the lost stories and the best storytellers in order to discover the truth. Sometimes old, stale history yields new, fresh information to those with the patience to look, like Ohio historian, D. W. Garber, whose search after the truth and knowledge of local history inspired this book. After much research, author Peggy Welch Mershon discovered an interesting whole rather than layers of stale stories told and retold and changed. This book contains some fresh, good information straight, if not from Heaven, then from Johnny's real, truthful friends. The people of Richland County, Ohio, lived beside John Chapman from the minute they settled the area, around 1808 until he refocused his efforts of planting appleseeds and spreading the religious teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg to Indiana in the late 1830s. They saw him walking down the streets of Mansfield, welcomed him to their cabins, listened to his stories, saw him sleeping by their hearths, and most called him fondly "Uncle Johnny" even though he had chosen a life much different than their own. This book tells their stories about the man who came to be called Johnny Appleseed and thus reveals a very close-up picture of a neighbor who would later be turned, by people who never met him, into a legend. This book for the first time reprints two "lost" newspaper articles from 1839 and 1840, the first found to incorporate him as a character called "the Swedenberger." It includes stories by Rosella Rice, a national author who was the third generation of her family to know Chapman well. Additional stories, long out of print, by other Richland County pioneers and the first picture drawn of Johnny Appleseed by a person who had met him are also included. When readers finish this book, they may not know how many nurseries he was said to have planted, or whether a pot on his head was his regular dress, but they will feel that they actually knew him, as a person, much like the pioneers of Richland County.

The Final Test - A Biography of James Ball Naylor, is about one of the most well known men in the country at the turn of the twentieth century, who has since faded into obscurity. A country doctor exceptionally gifted with natural ability, Naylor's passion for writing led to his greatest success as the author of a 1901 best seller. He wrote poetry, short stories, historical and other novels, and became well known as an entertainer and speaker on the Lyceum and Chautauqua Circuits, as well as a political force both as a candidate and a newspaper columnist. His contributions and accomplishment as an educator, writer, poet, public speaker, entertainer, public servant, and politician were numerous. His involvement in politics brought him more than passing friendships with local and national politicians, including Warren G. Harding, whom he knew from their earliest days in politics. This association led to Naylor's thirteen-year stint as a columnist for the Marion Star, but his staunch support of Harding in the face of the scandals after Harding's death affected Naylor's reputation as well. This is an inspiring story of a remarkable man with strong moral character and integrity who was dedicated to his family and to helping others in his profession as a physician. The Final Test - A Biography of James Ball Naylor was a FINALIST in the Biography-Historical category in the 2011 National INDIE Excellence Awards.

Vintage Verse is a special collection of poems that are as apropos today as when they were written between 1889 and the mid-1940s by James Ball Naylor. The poems were culled from treasured family scrapbooks by Lucile Naylor as a tribute to her father, the best-selling author of Ralph Marlowe in 1901. Most of the poems appeared in newspapers and magazine but were not included in any of the seven volumes of collected verse that Naylor published during his lifetime. His poetry was written for ordinary folks and touches on the beauty of nature, portrays family life, pays tribute to the flag and the veterans of our wars, addresses political issues and tickles the funny bone. The poems in Vintage Verse linger and take you on a journey down memory lane--there's a little something for everybody. The volume includes special selections that are appropriate for this, the first in a Tribute Series to James Ball Naylor. It is edited and annotated by Theresa Marie Flaherty, the author of The Final Test - A Biography of James Ball Naylor.

In His Name is Jacob Harris (2ndEdition), the main characters of the book are loosely based on the author's great-great grandfather, Jacob, and Jacob's brother, Lorenzo. They were adopted when quite young after Indians massacre the rest of their family. They are plunged into an historical background that will be surprising to many readers, such as the Confederate Navy, connections to Canada and England, secret societies, and the financing of the Confederacy. Although a love story is woven into their adventures, the backdrop of the romance is the Civil War and the Confederacy's effort to keep the Southern way of life. The story introduces many aspects of the Confederacy's attempts to win the war; their naval threat against Union shipping, the smuggling of arms from Liverpool to the port of Charleston, the Confederate Secret Service's subversive activities in Canada, and how secret societies such as the Knights of the Golden Circle, the Sons of Liberty, and the Copperheads Order sabotaged northern transportation networks and even national elections. Elements of the Civil War not often discussed in other books are included in this book. Surprises in it might challenge current thinking on the War Between the States and the brave men who fought it.Betrayal, conspiracy, romance, and adventure are the themes portrayed in this narrative. The story is more than romance, spies, Confederate organizations, and the conflict of opposing armies, however. It is a tale about people, the choices they make, about families separated by war and what that sacrifice means, and about men and womentrying to rebuild their lives after the war. It is also about loss, as well as acceptance. Although the previous edition ended on a cliffhanger with no promise of resolution, this 2ndEdition contains one additional chapter that changes the ending.
