Throughout eight years of existence, La PanaderÃa served Mexico City as a vibrant non-profit space for exhibitions, residencies, and cultural events involving local and international artists. This retrospective catalogue exists as a collective testimony on the artistic productions and exhibitions that resulted from the space, which was founded in 1994 in a former bakery by local artists Yoshua Okon and Miguel Calderón. La PanaderÃa emphasized, by way of its inherent nature, the integration of eclectic marginal practices. Young artists were invited to exhibit video, photography, installation and performance-based works, but the space was also characterized by parties and concerts, reflecting a lifestyle and a social dynamic that opposed a rigid set of paradigms which dictated how art should be. La PanaderÃa: 1994-2002 is a visual and theoretical digest representative of the national and international art scene, presenting a selection of 60 exhibitions by foreign and Mexican contemporary artists via photographic documentation, a brief descriptive text, and ephemera such as invitations. Six critical texts consider the relevance of the space, while anecdotes from artists and the visiting public pay testimony to it. Dozens of artists are represented here, including Carlos Amorales, Chris Johanson, Emily Jacir, Francis Alÿs, Gelatin, Kirsten Stoltmann, Las ultrasónicas, Luis Felipe Ortega, Miguel Calderón, Minerva Cuevas, Semefo, Shepard Fairey and Uri Tzaig. The book is accompanied by a CD with music by Silverio.
In his multidisciplinary works, Mexican artist Fernando Ortega plays with everyday perception--the negligible sights and sounds around us. In "Piano Recital" (2008), for instance, Ortega asked a motorcycle mechanic to tune a piano, on which pieces by Chopin were then played. Featured here are recent works and essays by curators Jens Hoffmann and Michel Blancsubé.
This book offers essential support for families of any constellation who are exploring Jewish life while respecting the heritage and traditions of those they love.
A comprehensive new survey of Crowner's multimedia explorations of abstraction and material cultureNew York-based artist Sarah Crowner (born 1974) makes paintings, ceramics, sculptures, installations and theater sets. Her large-scale sewn canvases display a fluency in mid-20th-century art, artists and architecture, with a particular regard for geometric abstraction and Color Field compositions. Crowner's rigorous practice has long engaged thematic research with an abiding interest in materials, craft, and their related histories and processes. This beautifully produced, comprehensive publication spans over a decade of the artist's wide-ranging practice, documenting all of her major works to date, including her most recent exhibitions in Mexico and Brazil. Essays by Nikki Columbus, Diego Matos and Ingrid Schaffner discuss Crowner's tileworks, paintings and designs for the stage in depth, showing how she has drawn inspiration from Mexican culture across disciplines and throughout the history of modernism as a whole. A portfolio of images is featured alongside Quinn Latimer's lyrical narrative poem "Score for Three Snakes."

The settlements along Florida's gulf coast that now comprise Sarasota County-including Venice, Osprey, Englewood, and Sarasota?started out with economies reliant on cattle, citrus, and fish. The communities grew with the arrivals of immigrants from Scotland, transplants from among the socially prominent of Chicago, and others looking for a better place to live. The story of the county is of people such as Bertha Palmer, who was able to have a town moved, and John Ringling, who made the area the "Circus Capital of the World." It is also the story of agricultural towns evolving into cities sought by tourists.Historic Photos of Sarasota County traces the region's growth from the small wooden homes and fishing piers of old to the modern high-rise condominiums of today. In vivid black-and-white, the book offers historic images of the early pioneers in the wilderness, the ?Tin Can Tourists? arriving in trailers, and sunbathers on the broad white beaches.

- Critically-acclaimed author: Jeff Johnson has received praise from numerous high-profile authors (including John Irving and Katherine Dunn) and media outlets (such as Time Magazine)- A delightfully eccentric cast of characters: Knottspeed offers a wide variety of truly unique characters and an anti-hero protagonist that can't help but be charming despite (and perhaps because of) his rough edges.- Urban noir at its best: Fans of authors like Irvine Welsh and Jerry Stahl will love the grittiness of this urban mystery while also appreciating the heart behind the story.
