In this uplifting story, the reader is guided by the point of view of the main character (a baby) as he observes the world around him during the Covid-19 pandemic. Events marking this unusual period in history are portrayed in a friendly manner throughout this "memoir," brightening up what was a time of uncertainty and encouraging readers to always wear a smile.

This story came from a piece of wood. I was hiking in the mountains on a trail that led around a swamp. Beside the trail was a piece of wood, gnawed on each end by beavers. It looked like a small football to me. I picked it up and took it to my classroom. When my students asked what it was, I told them that it was a Beaver Ball. Thus, Beaver Ball was born. I would like to acknowledge all of my students from that time, and hence, for their imagination.

I call this "macho poetry" because pure poetry just doesn't describe how I write. Now the love poetry that I write is where I indulge my romantic side but I still choose to be simple and readable. When I graduated Georgia State University I chose to go straight into the U.S. Paratrooper Department and later I moved to the Ranger Department. Then I attended college later in my life and people were a little surprised when they found I had a bent toward poetry. However, I have been writing all my life whether songs, poetry or stories. I write down to earth poetry 97% of the time. I don't like my readers to have to try and figure out what I am saying. So I just call it "macho poetry", straight words from a man. I hope you like it.

In 1992, Gatorade ran a series of ads about the legendary basketball player and icon, Michael Jordan. The series was called Be like Mike. I tried. I went to the backyard with my basketball and tried the alley oop but there was more alley than oop. I tried his 360° wind-mill dunk, but did more like a 10° lay-up. I tried his long-range threes and came up with short-range twos. As hard as I tried, I couldn t be like Mike. Which brings me to my older brother, Mike. He introduced me to sports, which he loved dearly. Because of his recent death, I am dedicating the book to his memory. And I am also going to try to be like Mike in the way that he nurtured his friendships. People are lucky if they have one or two really good friends. Mike had several. Some had been friends for fifty years. One of his friends said at his funeral, Mike was the most loyal friend I ever had. I m going to nurture my friendships in memory of my brother. All of these stories in this book have appeared in my church s newsletter over the years and as such, are a reflection of what was happening in my life at a particular point in time. They also reflect the sports that either I or our son, Tyler, (please forgive the constant references to him, my wife, Sheri and our little girl, Natalie) have played or loved. With that in mind, if you love tennis or gymnastics, then accept my apologies. Those sports, and some others, are not in the book. I trust that this book will be helpful to moms and dads, coaches and to the many kids and adults, like me, who love to play the game.

When Steve Davis became pastor of the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Georgia in 1995, one of the first things he learned was the expectation that he was to write a weekly newsletter column. They were to be about 300 words and could be on any topic he chose. Some pastors make these columns into promo pieces about upcoming church events. But Steve decided that this would be a good opportunity to bring a smile to the faces of parishioners and bring a touch of inspiration as well. Steve had never done much writing but nonetheless undertook the weekly assignment with enthusiasm. He began to get much positive feedback, which only inspired him more. Over the years, his articles have covered topics such as Christian living, Church, Sports, Holidays, and Family. Many people in the church had encouraged him to put his articles in a book. Well, after about ten years of articles and some prodding from others, he did just that. He chose to focus, in the first book, on articles dealing with the subjects of Church and Christian Living. When searching for a book title, he came across one of his articles with the title, Steeple People, and he quickly settled on that. You will find these articles easy to read, humorous and inspiring. They will make excellent stories for preachers and teachers who need to illustrate a particular point.

See the stats of Willie McCovey from his first professional baseball assignment in Sandersville, Georgia in 1955. Check out the early managerial numbers of Earl Weaver when he played and managed for Fitzgerald and Dublin in 1957 and 1958. Another Hall-of-Famer named Red Schoendienst made his professional debut down in Albany, Georgia in 1942. Numerous big leaguers got their start playing class-D baseball in one of the small Georgia cities. Cities who participated from other states include from Alabama: Alabama City, Anniston, Attalla, Dothan, Gadsden, Huntsville, Lanett, Opelika, Selma, Talladega, Tallassee, and Valley; and from Florida: Gainesville, Panama City, and Tallahassee. This book is loaded from cover to cover with statistics and information about these three great class-D minor leagues. Sorry, there aren't any pictures except on the cover. Hoping to have a photographic history of the leagues in the near future.
