In autumn 2024 the Vitra Design Museum will present the first ever museum exhibition about Nike, the world's most revered sport brand. The exhibition and this accompanying catalogue mark the milestones in Nike's fifty year history and explores its ascent into a global brand that holds a central role in popular culture. The focus of the exhibition is on Nike's design practice - from the company's beginnings in the 1960s and the design of its famous "swoosh" logo to iconic products such as Air Max and current research devoted to future materials and sustainability.The main source for the exhibition is the Department of Nike Archives, which contains a unique collection of drawings, prototypes and other documentation. The exhibition marks the most comprehensive access ever given to this archive. Among the objects on show are rarities and one-offs from the company's early days in the 1960s, original design drawings and prototypes of iconic sneaker models, historical documents and films, as well as the results of collaborations with creative figures such as Virgil Abloh and Marc Newson.Nike: Form Follows Motion traces Nike's design process, which begins with the scientific analysis of the human body in motion and material research and culminates in the finished product and its branding. Along with Nike designers like Bill Bowerman, Diane Katz, Tinker Hatfield and Wilson Smith, athletes - from the world's greatest to the everyday - have played an important role in this design process by bringing their own experiences and requirements into product development. At the same time, Nike: Form Follows Motion illuminates the numerous narratives behind iconic objects and innovations.

These essays document how artists and designers availed themselves of similar motifs and strategies in the Pop era. With more than 300 illustrations, Pop Art Design paints a picture of the Pop era that finally gives proper recognition to the central role played by design, offering a kaleidoscope through which to rediscover the Pop phenomenon.

The miniaturization and networking of computer processors as well as the digitalization and wireless transmission of data are opening up new possibilities for domestic environments. But what consequences will this have on residential architecture? Emerging architectural firms were invited to develop visionary answers to this question. Their extraordinary architectural visions are presented in detail for the first time in this publication. The essays are supplemented by a section providing comprehensive, graphically attractive data on demographic and technical developments that will shape our living environments in the near future.

In the fields of design, architecture, and engineering, Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) is widely considered one of the most versatile and innovative designers of the 20th century. Yet surprisingly, only a relatively small number of collectors and cognoscente outside France are familiar with his work. Alongside Charles and Ray Eames, to whose oeuvre Vitra has dedicated itself since 1957, Jean Prouvé can truly be considered the second major "constructor" in 20th century design. The small book delves into the manifest differences between the Eames' work and Prouvé's designs - differences that are quite evidently the product of the respective technological climate in which these marvelous designers were active. For many years now, the Vitra Design Museum collection has focused on Jean Prouvé as well as Charles and Ray Eames.

Flexibility, mobility and versatility: these three qualities have driven technological and formal innovations in design and architecture at least since modernism. Living in Motion is the first interdisciplinary account of flexible living, presenting works by modernist and contemporary architects and designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Jean Prouvé, Joe Colombo and Shigeru Ban, comparing and contrasting their works with flexible houses and installations in non-European cultures.

»Iwan Baan: Moments in Architecture« offers the first comprehensive overview of works created by one of the leading photographers of our time. More than 680 images from two decades document the growth of global megacities and portray buildings by prominent contemporary architects including Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, and Zaha Hadid, as well as traditional and informal architecture all around the world. The photographer was personally involved in the conception of this richly illustrated and beautifully made publication. It includes texts by Iwan Baan, Lisa Dabscheck, Beatrice Galilee, Marvin Heiferman, Mea Hoffmann, and Hans Ibelings.

Das Umbrella House ist das kleinste gebaute Wohnhaus des japanischen Architekten und Mathematikers Kazuo Shinohara (1925-2006). Das vorliegende Buch widmet sich der Geschichte dieses Meisterwerks. Ursprünglich 1961 in Tokio erbaut, konnte es mehr als 60 Jahre später durch eine glückliche Fügung vor dem Abriss bewahrt werden und fand in Deutschland auf dem Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein eine neue Heimat. Das in Holzbauweise errichtete Haus lehnt sich an traditionelle japanische Tempel- und Wohnarchitektur an. Der Abbau in Tokio und Wiederaufbau in Weil am Rhein wurde von Fachleuten aus Japan und Europa begleitet.Impressionen aus der Entstehungszeit im Japan der 1960er-Jahre, Entwürfe und Pläne, dokumentarische Bilder des Ab- und Wiederaufbaus und Fotografien des Hauses am neuen Standort zeichnen seine weite Reise nach. Fachkundige Texte von Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama und David B. Stewart ergänzen das Bild und ordnen das Umbrella House in den japanischen Architekturdiskurs zwischen 1960 und heute ein.
