The second edition of this collection of 13 original papers contains an updated introductory section detailing the significance that the original articles published in 1992 have for the further development of research into linguistic politeness into the 21st century. The original articles focus on the phenomenon of politeness in language. They present the most important problems in developing a theory of linguistic politeness, which must deal with the crucial differences between lay notions of politeness in different cultures and the term 'politeness' as a concept within a theory of linguistic politeness. The universal validity of the term itself is called into question, as are models such as those developed by Brown and Levinson, Lakoff, and Leech. New approaches are suggested. In addition to this theoretical discussion, an empirical section presents a number of case studies and research projects in linguistic politeness. These show what has been achieved within current models and what still remains to be done, in particular with reference to cross-cultural studies in politeness and differences between a Western and a non-Western approach to the subject. The publication of this second edition demonstrates that the significance of the collection is just as salient in the first decade of the new millennium as it was at the beginning of the 1990s.

Die Reihe HANDBÜCHER ZUR SPRACH- UND KOMMUNIKATIONSWISSENSCHAFT erschließt einen Wissensbereich, der sowohl die allgemeine Linguistik und die speziellen, philologisch orientierten Sprachwissenschaften als auch diejenigen Wissenschaftsgebiete umfasst, die sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten aus der immer umfangreicher werdenden Forschung über die vielfältigen Erscheinungen des kommunikativen Handelns entwickelt haben. In der klassischen Disziplin der Sprachwissenschaft erscheint eine Zusammenfassung des Wissensstandes notwendig, um der im Wechsel der Theorien rasch voranschreitenden Forschung eine Bezugsbasis zu geben; in den neuen Wissenschaften können die Handbücher dem Forscher Übersicht geben und Orientierung verschaffen. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, wird in der Handbuchreihe, was die Vollständigkeit in der Darstellung, die Explizitheit in der Begründung, die Verlässlichkeit in der Dokumentation von Daten und Ergebnissen und die Aktualität im Methodischenangeht, eine Stufe der Verwirklichung angestrebt, die mit den besten Handbuchkonzeptionen anderer Wissenschaftszweige vergleichbar ist. Dabei wird davon ausgegangen, dass mit dieser Organisationsform der Hauptzweck dieser Handbuchreihe, nämlich die angemessene Darstellung des derzeitigen Problem- und Wissensstandes in den durch die jeweiligen Handbuchbände abgedeckten Teilbereichen, am besten verwirklicht werden kann.

Einizige historisch-kritische Ausgabe des Dichters und Publizisten Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), die seine sämtliche Texte in deutscher und französischer Sprache sowie die überlieferte Korrespondenz umfasst. Die Edition ist in drei Abteilungen gegliedert: Werke in deutscher Sprache (Band 1 bis 12), Werke in französischer Sprache (Band 13 bis 19) und Briefwechsel (Band 20 bis 27). Den Textbänden sind separate, zum Teil mehrbändige Kommentare zugeordnet. 57 Teilbände liegen bereits vor, der noch ausstehende Kommentarband 12K der I. Abteilung befindet sich in Vorbereitung.

Als Kernstück des vorliegenden Bandes ist die Schrift "Das Wesen der5 Religion" zu betrachten, in der Feuerbach seine anthropologisch-materialistische Naturanschauung und - in den "Ergänzungen und Erläuterungen" dazu - auch seine Auffassung der Beziehungen zwischen Religion, Staat, Politik und Recht entwickelt. So verkörpert diese Arbeit den Übergang vom "Wesen des Christentums" zu den auf ihr fußenden "Vorlesungen über das Wesen der Religion". Weiter enthält der Band neben dem Fragment "Wider den Dualismus von Leib und Seele, Fleisch und Geist" und der Abhandlung "Die Unsterblichkeitsfrage vom Standpunkt der Anthropologie" u.a. auch die 1850 unter dem Titel "Die Naturwissenschaft und die Revolution" veröffentlichte Besprechung von Moleschotts "Lehre der Nahrungsmittel", in der Feuerbach - im Vertrauen auf die revolutionierendem Wirkungen des wissenschaftlichen Denkens - nach der Niederlage der Volkserhebungen von 1848/49 der Reaktion das unvermeidliche Heraufkommen einer neuen Revolution ankündigt.

Pierre Bayle bereitete durch seinen Kampf gegen Theologie und spekulative Philosophie, den er mit Hilfe des Skeptizismus führte, den Boden für die Entwicklung aufklärerischer und materialistischer Ideen in Frankreich. Bayles kritische Betrachtungen über Religion und Moral, über Theologie und Wissenschaft, über den Atheismus und eine atheistische Gesellschaft, nutzt Feuerbach zur Propagierung eigener aufklärerischer Auffassungen: Er kritisiert jegliche Vermittlung von Theologie und Wissenschaft, von Philosophie, Religion und reaktionärer Politik und plädiert für eine Philosophie, die die Wissenschaften und das allgemeine Wohl befördert. Unter Feuerbachs Schriften erinnert dieses weit über den Rahmen einer philosophiegeschichtlichen Darstellung hinausgehende Werk in besonderem Maße ab die streitbaren Schriften der französischen Aufklärer und Atheisten des 18. Jahrhunderts.

Für die Heine-Säkularausgabe musste eine Entscheidung bezüglich der chronologischen Anordnung getroffen werden. Gewählt wurde eine Anordnung, die zusammengehörige Werkkomplexe, zum Beispiel die Prosateile der "Reisebilder" oder die "Lutezia", als selbständige Bandeinheiten begreift. Ähnlich wie Heine selbst in der Ausgabe seiner französischsprachigen Werke bestimmte, werden in der Säkularausgabe gleichzeitig entstandene Texte nach inhaltlicher Übereinstimmung zusammengefast, so das sich eine leicht zu überschauende Anordnung des Gesamtwerkes ergibt. Band 3 enthält die Gedichte 1845 bis 1856 mit "Romanzero" und Einzelgedichten aus den Jahren 1845 bis 1856.

Volume 2 treats, in great detail and, at times quite innovatively, the individual stages of development of the study of language as an autonomous discipline, from the growing awareness in 17th and 18th century Europe of genetic relationships among a host of languages to the establishment of comparative-historical Indo-European linguistics in the 19th century, from the generation of the Schlegels, Bopp, Rask, and Grimm to the Neogrammarians and the application of the comparative method to non-Indo-European languages from all over the globe. Typological linguistic interests, first synthesized by Humboldt, as well as the development of various other non-historical endeavours in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, such as language and psychology, semantics, phonetics, and dialectology, receive ample attention.

Intelligentsia has been a widely used term in the studies of history and society to describe intellectual, academic, educational and publishing circles. Zhang Qing analyses the formation of Chinese intelligentsia in the context of modern China, more specifically the late Qing dynasty and Republic of China, and addresses topics such as the expansion of newspaper distributions, the relationship between newspapers and academia, the impact of newspapers on society, the change of readers' expressions and scholars' social mobility. The emergence of the intelligentsia and other circles in the early twentieth century is an epitome of the drastic changes in Chinese society at the time, indicative both of a new state-society relation and of Chinese scholars' efforts to find new roles and identities for themselves after bidding farewell to imperial examinations. The author shows how both the emergence of new-type publications and new roles in academia had a profound influence on modern China. The formation of the intelligentsia at the turn of the twentieth century was not only a key to grasping modern Chinese history, but also a mirror for examining the future society.

Morphological typology is usually limited to the realm of grammar. Accordingly, English is considered an analytic language due to its poor grammatical morphology - but what about the lexicon? Taking a twofold approach, this study investigates the typological development of English nouns since 1150. First, the focus is on the means used to extend the lexicon: Correlating the central noun formation processes as well as borrowing reveals, for the first time, their quantitative importance - with some surprising results. Second, the structure of the lexicon takes center stage: The morphological analysis of all nouns uncovers diachronic shifts - and striking parallels between grammar and lexicon.

This book thematizes the tension between education, politics, and religion in Norway after the Second World War, with an emphasis on the years between 1945 and 1970, and throws a new light on Norwegian school and education in the post-war period. The Norwegian educational landscape in the years after the Second World War must be seen against the development of the welfare state, and it appears as a part of the social democracy project typical for Norway at that time. The Labour Party, which held a prominent position in the educational landscape in the post-war decades, is normally regarded to have been an important driving force behind secularization of schools in Norway, not least because the total number of weekly lessons in religious education gradually was reduced. This book problematizes this thesis and enlightens how important politicians and policymakers within the Labour Party defended religious education. A central point is that this defense must be seen within the frames of a liberally oriented protestant theology. The role of phonetic detail within the language system and its interplay with other kinds of linguistic information represent a hotly debated territory. This is the very first publication mapping onomatopoeia in the languages of the world. The publication provides a comprehensive, multi-level description of onomatopoeia in the world's languages. The sample covers six macro-areas defined in the WALS: Euroasia, Africa, South America, North America, Australia, Papunesia. Each language-descriptive chapter specifies phonological, morphological, word-formation, semantic, and syntactic properties of onomatopoeia in the particular language. Furthermore, it provides information about the approach to onomatopoeia in individual linguistic traditions, the sources of data on onomatopoeia, the place and the function of onomatopoeia in the system of each language.

Werden solche Prozesse literaturwissenschaftlicher Beschreibungsvokabulare selbst zum Gegenstand der Betrachtung, dann fallen verstärkt Rupturen, mitunter auch Kontroversen im Gebrauch der vielfach aus den Bereichen von Organizität und Technizität transferierten Metaphoriken ins Auge: Organisches und Technisches überlagern sich, interferieren, tauschen die Plätze. Eben diesen Phänomenen der Grenzüberschreitung in der metaphorischen Übertragung von Verbindungen des Organischen und Technischen - die im Angesicht neuester Technologien und Biopolitiken mehr den "Normalfall", denn eine Ausnahme bilden - geht der Band aus einer historiographischen Perspektive vom Mittelalter bis heute nach. "Organitechnoscience" stellt sich somit als Laborbegriff vor, literarische wie literaturtheoretische Operationen technischer und organischer Interferenzen nicht nur post , sondern auch ante digitisation nachzuzeichnen und auf ihre wissenspolitischen Dimensionen hin zu befragen.

Dieser Band lotet vor dem Hintergrund einer krisenhaften Gegenwart das Verhältnis von Verletzbarkeit und Institutionen aus. Im Fokus stehen dabei die Fragen, wie Dimensionen der Verletzbarkeit durch Anrufungen und soziale, politische, kulturelle Praktiken ( doing vulnerability ) institutionell hergestellt und perpetuiert werden, in welchen Bedeutungszusammenhängen sie verankert und verstetigt sind und wie Anrufungen der Verletzbarkeit schließlich auch provoziert und subvertiert werden können. This book advances a local, regional, and comparative analysis of the history of the sixty-eighters from Hungary and Romania between 1956 and 1975. The aim of the book is to answer to the following research question: to what extent does 'the long 1968' mark and change protest history? Another axis of my research, equally important, is: how can one genuinely distinguish between a protest, an opposition, and a pastime? Where did radicalisation truly begin, and when was it solely an auto-perception as a dissident? In other words, how can one truly distinguish between a leisure activity like listening to Radio Free Europe or exploring an altered state of consciousness, and an explicit political activity like organising a protest or writing subversive texts? Among other aims, the books's scope is to understand where a leisure activity ends, and a protest starts. By 'practicing counterculture, ' did the youth wish to contest the system or simply express themselves? As method, oral history plays a crucial part. On a superficial level, the interviews helped to fill in the archival gap. However, oral testimonies proved to reveal much more than essential factual information. Oral history clarified how political and social events influenced the subjects' memory formation.

For a brief moment in the history of Acre, there was a Hebrew community that linked old and new settlements. It had a national-Zionist orientation and consisted of Jews of local and Mizrachic origin. This community is no longer visible in the cityscape, and its history has disappeared from the collective Zionist memory - but it played a role in building the Jewish national community in Palestine. The unusual history of Acre shows how it succeeded in attracting new, nationalist settlers.The book seeks to illuminate the complexity and diversity of the Zionist enterprise in relation to the Arab and mixed towns of Mandatory Palestine by raising questions about the relationship between the "history of a place" and "national history." The notion of apocalypse is an age-old concept which has gained renewed interest in popular and scholarly discourse. Based on extensive fieldwork and interviews, it is the first of its kind to portray the inventory of linguistic and accompanying non-linguistic behaviors observed within and between different ethnolinguistic groups in the Siwa Oasis. It provides first-hand information about the linguistic habits of Siwan women, an aspect which is generally difficult to access in this gender-segregated community. The book sheds light on Berber-Arabic contact at the core of the Arab world and at a critical time when individual linguistic repertoires are expanding and Arabic is emerging as a powerful resource.

5G-Netze werden weltweit auf- und ausgebaut. Im Vergleich zu 4G bieten sie nicht nur offensichtliche Vorteile wie höhere Bitraten, sondern hohe Zuverlässigkeit und geringe Latenz, z.B. für Car-to-X-Anwendungen, oder die Einbindung einer sehr hohen Anzahl von Endgeräten, z.B. von Sensoren in einer Smart City. Open-RAN mit ihrer leistungsstarken Übertragungstechnik sowie das Kernnetz mit den innovativen Konzepten der Service Based Architecture und des Network Slicing inkl. Beispielen aus der Netzwerkpraxis ein. Ein 5G-System wird in der Gesamtsicht dargestellt, ergänzt durch einen Blick auf Campusnetze und abgerundet durch einen Überblick über alle relevanten IT Security-Aspekte. Abgeschlossen wird die Gesamtbetrachtung durch einen Blick auf die Umwelteinflüsse durch die elektromagnetische Strahlung, die Energie- und Rohstoffbedarfe sowie das Thema Nachhaltigkeit. Zudem wird die Weiterentwicklung bei 5G beschrieben inkl. eines optimal aufbereiteten Einstiegs in 6G. Hauptziel des Buches ist es, an 5G-Technik und -Anwendungsszenarien interessierten Personen fundiertes 5G-Wissen zu vermitteln und zur weiteren Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Themengebiet anzuregen. Angesprochen sind allgemein technisch Interessierte, speziell Mitarbeitende von öffentlichen und privaten Netzbetreibern. Interesse wird dieses Buch auch in den IT-Abteilungen möglicher 5G-Anwenderfirmen wecken, nicht zuletzt natürlich bei Studierenden der Informatik und Elektrotechnik.

Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit der Problematik der Funktionstüchtigkeit des Richtervorbehalts bei Fixierungen im Maßregelvollzug gemäß § 63 StGB. Für die Beantwortung der Frage, in welchem Maße sich der Grundrechtsschutz der Untergebrachten durch die Schaffung von § 33 StrUG NRW effektiv verbessert hat, wird die Thematik der rechtlichen Bedeutung und faktischen Wirkungskraft des Richtervorbehalts intra- sowie interdisziplinär umfassend beleuchtet.
