The trumpet is a brilliant instrument which shines brightly when playing proclamatory pieces. However, the trumpet also has a wonderfully lyrical side. The sound of an unaccompanied trumpet causes people to take note. It is a sound that announces something to come, or as the case may be, a poignant memory of what has gone before. I wrote the enclosed 54 arrangements and compositions to capture the beauty of solo, unaccompanied trumpet. Two of the selections are written for two trumpets. Some are well known hymns and some are lesser known lyrical pieces from early American hymnody. There are ancient chants and an original communion setting called The Lord's Supper.

The trumpet can be a beautifully lyrical instrument. Often not enough emphasis is placed on making the instrument sing. The 20 ballads contained in this book are designed to develop a lyrical sense. Play the pieces in a relaxed and free manner. Avoid playing too loud. On these pieces, when in doubt, play a notch softer thanyou might think normal. Strive for long phrases and let the melodies sing freelyfrom your trumpet. I think that if you play a number of these ballads as part of yourdaily practice you will see a definite growth in your ability to play in a beautifully free style.

Guitar Nocturnes is a collection of 12 lyrical, contemplative solos for plectrum or flatpick guitar. The pieces are intermediate in difficulty and give the guitarist solos which enable a maximum of expression. The compositions are characterized by introspective voice leading and lush chordal harmonies. All solos are in notation and tablature.

The guitar is such a wonderfully expressive instrument. The various possibilities available for tone color, timbre, voicings, etc. make composing for guitar a joyous task and also a challenge. I wrote these preludes to provide concert or recitalmaterial for the plectrum guitarist. They reflect an interesting variety of rhythms, keys, moods and harmonies. I have always believed that the plectrum or flatpickguitar could be an exciting concert instrument and it is with this in mind that I offer this new collection of solos. Guitar Sonatas isa collection of four extended compositions for guitar. The sonatas were composed in the keys of D, Dm, E and Em and each contains 3 or4 movements. Every sonata reflects an array of musical moods, colors and harmonic textures. They were composed to provide concert and recital material for the flatpick or plectrum guitarist. Velocity Etudes is a collection of 43 original compositions designed to enhance important elements of classic guitar technique. I have always felt that as important as scale and technique drills are, they can by themselves be very tedious to practice. In addition, technique has relevance only in the context of the entire musical composition it is intended to enhance. So I like to present technique as part of a musical composition. These etudes were composed with this thought in mind. The compositions can be used merely as technical studies but they also may be used as short concert or recital pieces. Several of them may be grouped to present a kind of suite. I hope you enjoy playing these etudes. The guitar has so many moods and colors. Good technique enables the guitarist to bring out thebreadth and subtlety of expression possible with this instrument. I have tried to present a variety of moods, rhythms and textures in these compositions and have presented a workable assortment of keys, both major and minor.

The tango is the king of the Latin dances. The captivating rhythms and seductive melodies of the tango have captured the imaginations of musicians and composers for many years. The tango has even found its place in the world of concert musical literature due to the fine works of composers such as AstorPiazzolla. It is hard to imagine a guitarist today without a number of tangos in his solo repertoire. These 14 tangos were composed to provide tango literature for the plectrum or flatpick guitarist. Of course they may also be performed on theclassic guitar.I would like to make special note of the tango, Lucia. I originally wrote Lucia as a guitar duet. The duet is recorded on my Acoustic Guitar Portraits recording and is also in print in the companion book. I composed a new solo setting for Lucia in this book. I believe these tangos may be performed in concert or recital, for fun oreven on a "gig." I hope you enjoy performing them as much as I did composing them! All music in notation and tablature.

The twenty classic guitar etudes in this book are melodic and "guitaristic." I composed them in guitar friendly keys. They were written to be fun to play and also to provide short pieces ideal for recitals or concert preludes and encores.The pieces should be played with freedom and expression. They are intermediate in difficulty and will present a diverse array of moods and textures for the guitarist.

The goal of these twenty etudes is to address various issues of guitar techniquewhile presenting pieces that have melodic content, are interesting and fun to play and which can be used in concert or recital. Fragmented scale runs, scales ascending and descending several octaves, switching positions amidst musical phrases, arpeggio picking, string skipping and combining open and fingered strings are some of the issues addressed in these compositions.
