From an aerial viewpoint, Hilton Head is a foot-shaped, or ankle-boot shaped, island albeit without any visible toes. It lies roughly 95 miles south of Charleston and 31miles north of Savannah and is one of over 100 Sea islands on the Atlantic Ocean, along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and North Florida. The Sea islands form a chain of tidal and barrier islands along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and North Florida. It is sometimes referred to as a barrier island. A tidal island is a piece of land connected to the mainland by a natural or man-made causeway exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide. The terrain of a barrier island includes a dynamic beach system with offshore sandbars, a pounding surf and shifting beaches, as well as grassy dunes behind the beach, maritime forests with wetlands in the interiors, and salt or sand marshes facing the mainland. Using those defining characteristics, the north end of Hilton Head would be classified as a tidal island and the south end a barrier island. The barrier and tidal halves of Hilton Head Island are separated by Broad Creek, a land-locked tidal marsh. Hilton Head is roughly twelve miles long and 5 miles across at its widest point. It is surrounded by the Intra-Coastal Waterway on the mainland side and 13 miles of beachfront on the Atlantic. Those 13 miles include ten prominent beaches with public access (although some are tucked away inside gated communities with limited access). The beaches are what draw many visitors to the island. But those who deem to explore a little beyond the sandy shores are rewarded with at least 22 public parks and nature preserves, as well as, 64 miles of leisure trails (shared by foot traffic, bicycles, and the occasional Segway) spread across its 42 square miles of land. Hilton Head Island is also known for its rich history that dates back thousands of years to the seasonal occupation by Native Americans. The historical accounts of the island continue with its sighting by William Hilton in 1663, the arrival of English planters who grew indigo and rice, followed by the introduction of cotton after the American Revolution. Hilton Head became an important base of operations for the Union blockade of Southern ports during the Civil War. One of the things I most enjoy doing on the island is to pack up my camera and set out by foot, bicycle or car for a few hours of exploring along the beaches or inland areas. Those times have garnered me a large collection of photographs, some of which I have included in this book. This book is not intended to be a travelogue or tourist guide. I don't have photos of all of the various species of wildlife, or the top spots to visit. Instead, I consider this book the testimony of a love affair between a girl and an island, much like what I wrote about in books 3 and 4 of my Georgia Ayres novel series. In this case, I'm the girl, although I have long passed the age where that description could be used accurately!Within this book, I have tried to present a sample of what I find to be the heart and soul of Hilton Head Island: the sunrises and sunsets that start and end each day, and the various interior contributors to the total beauty and charm of the island. I hope you enjoy the visual journey!

"Ziggy Zig-Zags the Light and Dark Fantastic, Volume 1" is a fantasy graphic novel with a story and scripting by awarded author Ron Baxley, Jr., art by renowned Oz artist Vincent Myrand, and layout and lettering by Ali Tavakoly (who has also done work in the comics industry). Ziggy, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi based on Ron's shelter-adopted emotional support dog of the same breed, is one of many steeds of the elves in Wales and is the elves' chosen champion for great quests. (According to Welsh mythology, in fact, the markings around many Pembroke Welsh Corgis' heads and around their necks indicated that small saddles and stirrups were once on their bodies and that the Corgis were used as horses by the elves and faeries). As a steed, with his saddle like a super hero cape, Ziggy is chosen by the elves to rescue various characters in different fantasy worlds, including Neverland, Oz, and Wonderland. He even has adventures in the modern reality of the "Out World" including with a figure fictionally attached to World War II. During Ziggy's quests, he is pursued by the Dark Elf, a fallen elf from the Welsh woods, and other foes. Like Baxley, Jr., he contends with anxiety during his quests. Ziggy wears a silver dog tag with the elven runes for valor and even anxiety written there. Whether he can evade his foe has to do largely with how he contends with his anxiety and holds with faith.
O.Z. Diggs the seventh, descendant of Oz the Great and Terrible Wizard, like all male heirs in his family, was cursed by the wicked witch of the West. Or so the story, which had been passed down through many generations, is told. He was the storyteller now, and the last of his line, fated by the witch's curse never to produce an heir. But he does think he has found a way out. In order to break the curse and thus allow himself and his family to return to Oz, he must be recognised as a descendant of his distant relative. Things seem to be set in motion. He has come across one of the magical staffs owned by Oz, and through it he received a message about a band of good wizards and witches that were also cast out from Oz. They call themselves the Society of the Walking Cane, and he is certain they can help him. But as is always the case, there are those of good, and those of evil, and those of evil will stop at nothing to ensure the witch's curse remains in place. Can he break the curse, or is he fated to be the end of his line? Find out in Ron Baxley, Jr.'s O.Z. Diggs Himself Out.O.Z. Diggs Himself Out is a spin-off of the popular Wizard of Oz, focusing around the distant descendants of the original Wizard, and a curse bestowed upon his line. Ron Baxley, Jr. writes in an imaginative first person perspective style which, alongside a serious plot, has elements of humour, and also darker humour to it. As stated in the book, the lines between the real adventure and that immortalised through the story have been altered. This allows the author to take something familiar and turn it to their own devices. There is a lot to like about this story, such as adventure and world building. It definitely fits quite nicely into the fantasy genre, and will appeal to that audience. Imaginative, fun, and enjoyable, O.Z. Diggs Himself Out makes for an entertaining read, whether you're a fan of the Wizard of Oz or not.K. J. Simmill, Readers Favorite LLC
In the beautiful South Carolina coastal city of Beaufort there once lived a mysterious man known only as "Driftwood" Corry. No one knew from where he came or why he ended up in the Sea Islands east of Beaufort during the 1960s and early 1970s. He became well-known for the incredible works of art he made from driftwood found along the beach and marsh fronts, and for the Gullah masks he made from horseshoe crab shells, both of which he sold from his home/store fronting US Highway 21 on Harbor Island to tourists on their way to Hunting Island and the future resort Fripp Island. He disappeared in the mid-1970s as mysteriously as he arrived in the early 1960s.Decades later, long-time resident and first-time author Gibbes McDowell decided to bring "Driftwood" back to life in this entertaining tale based in part on the little-known local life of "Driftwood".In "Driftwood Unmased", Gibbes brings "Driftwood" from his beginnings in Ireland through the front lines of World War I, his eventual arrival in America and final stop in Yemassee, South Carolina, before hitching a ride to what would be his final home on Harbor Island near the Atlantic coast."Driftwood" takes up home with the Sea Island Gullah community on neighboring Saint Helena Island, which welcomes the strangely-accented white man into its own, and "Driftwood" even wins over the mysterious witch doctor "Dr. Snake" to make his home and marry one of their women. It isn't long after his arrival that he attracts the attention of the local sheriff and his good ol' boy deputies, but the conflicts of the pre-desegregation south are relatively minor until the day "Driftwood" discovers pirate gold in the marshes near his home...and a piece shows up and is brought to the sheriff's attention!"Driftwood Unmasked" explores the fictional political heirarchy of Beaufort and the Sea Islands in all its fact-based reality, sharing with the reader what life was like in those times decades past. Shining through all the political turmoil and threats, "Driftwood" steadfastly remains unchanged in his calm fight against "The Man".As an appendix, McDowell presents the true biography of "Driftwood", the result of his research as he was writing his engrossing fictional tale, many aspects of which turned out to match Gibbes' imagination long after the chapters were written!Such is the life of Beaufort legend "Driftwood" Corry!
