All the while striving to stay in touch with his wife Jill Oppenheim, an enthusiastic letter-writer, who is expecting, then rearing, their first baby, while keeping him abreast the events on the home front... He meets ordinary and extraordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, learning lessons both practical or tragic. Two especially drove home: "Do what you think best, but do it." And: "Watch you don't trip on a mine." Alfred de Grazia was made posthumously a Distinguished Member of the Regiment of Psychological Operations of the Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on October 31, 2014
