Ready for a change after high school, I turned my world upside down and went to college up north in redwood country, where a full-blooded Hoopa Indian gave me an eye-opening introduction to his world. Then, to avoid the draft, I became a Peace Corps Volunteer, and got snarled up in the war in El Salvador.
