He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He attended the University of Buffalo and Carnegie Institute of Technology, receiving a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1958. Comstock has worked on various engineering and research projects connected to the Cold War. He worked on electronic intelligence for the CIA and NSA and did experimental and theoretical work in sonar for the Navy. In Australia, he worked on an AN/FPQ-6 radar that tracked space missions for NASA, including APOLLO and SKYLAB. Comstock also has an MA in mathematics from the University of Colorado and a BS in computer science from the Montana State University. From 2006 to 2011, he worked for the Department of the Army at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
