Ana Mc Clure learns her father died stopping an alien invasion, but no one is aware of it because there is no such thing as aliens. The government knows aliens exist but if the public knew there would be war where Earth would surely lose. This is played against a backdrop of Earth itself going through crust adjustments of overheating and then cooling rapidly resulting in Earthquakes, huge tsunami waves, and excessive volcanoes forcing the public to move south.
