Hildegard von Bingen var en tysk abedisse, såkaldt mystiker, forfatter, læge og komponist. Hun var født som 10’ende barn i en adelig familie og blev ”givet” til klostret. Det er ca.1000 år siden hun levede. Hun siges at være middelalderens mest betydningsfulde kvinde.En væsentlig del af hendes eget forfatterskab, bl.a. Physica, foreligger nu i en dansk oversættelse-gengivelse af Anemette Olsen for første gang. I øvrigt sagde hun selv, at hun ikke havde skrevet et ord selvstændigt, men blot nedskrev, hvad Gud havde dikteret.Physica rummer en række ”bøger”, hvoraf de vigtigste er: Træbogen, Plantebogen, Dyrebogen og Mineralbogen, her giver hun anvisninger på, hvorledes dyr, træer, mineraler og planter kan give mennesket helende muligheder. Hun er middelalderens vigtigste naturlæge, og hendes værker giver stadig genklang, bl.a. i Carsten Vagn Hansens konstatering i forordet, at sundhedsvæsenets krav om videnskabelig evidens slet og ret er bestemt af medicinalindustrien.Bogen er gennemillustreret med over hundrede middelalder-illustrationer.Hildegard von Bingen blev kåret som helgen, men først i 2012.
