This series of selected scores are from our beloved classical concert program «Singing Strings» YANG Jing Music for Pipa with String Quartet. Stringed instruments form the backbone of the Western classical symphony orchestra. The Eastern string instrument Pipa has developed into a leading solo instrument as early as the Tang dynasty (618 - 709) in the East. In this set of classical concert programs, all pieces maintain the original and natural acoustic sound source of unplugged string instruments. It enables the encounter of different acoustic properties, different expressions of sound, and sound aesthetics that have developed over time in different regions. This Program lets old & new string instruments offer us an unforgettable musical experience _ from the fresh energy of the morning to the poetry of the sunset - from a silk bamboo tea house to a passionate dance in the desert of the Wild West - from the search for one's own identity to the singing of swinging hearts - from pearls falling on to a jade plate to the gallop of black horses... Each piece opens up a new perspective.

An electroacoustic, olfactory, and textual project by artist Florian Hecker.Florian Hecker is an artist whose work is realized through the technical manipulation of sensory data. By utilizing machinic scales and registers, Hecker creates environments marked at once by overwhelming complexity and vexing subtlety, where audience members are led to dwell on the outer limits of their own perceptual capacities.Resynthesizers took place in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, in the Fitzpatrick-Leland House, a tri-level residence designed by Rudolf Schindler and built in 1936. Centered around a trio of compositions produced using a novel algorithm for texture synthesis, the exhibition also featured three olfactory accords selected by Marc vom Ende and Philip Kraft of Symrise, and three electrophoretic displays transmitting a libretto by Robin Mackay. The molecular construction of sensory experience enabled by the technical manipulation and synthesis of materials emerges as a central theme of Resynthesizers. The regime of these ‘immaterials’ disjoins sensation from inherited conceptual models, and in the encounter with its resyntheses we are challenged to reintegrate sense and formulate new concepts.Designed by NORM, Zurich, this meticulously assembled document features exhibition documentation by Fredrik Nilsen Studio and data visualizations by Axel Roebel alongside essays by Wendy Hui Kyong Chun and Alex H. Barnett, Marc Vom Ende and Philip Kraft, Robin Mackay, and Luciana Parisi.

American composer John Zorn is arguably one of the most important composers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This book provides a comprehensive exploration of Zorn's concert works for keyboard from 1982 to 2019.John Zorn is a prolific composer whose body of work includes a wide array of pieces that aim to resist traditional categories. Zorn's body of work is exceptionally diverse, and he has been actively involved in creating music since 1973. Until now, almost no scholarly studies have been published that focus on Zorn's musical output. This book aims to start the conversation on interpreting Zorn's work, focusing exclusively on Zorn's concert works for the keyboard from 1982-2019.Beginning with "Dead Ringer" in 1982 and working his way chronologically to pieces arranged all the way up to 2019, author Andrew Santander presents John Zorn's work while making no attempt to classify Zorn under any one tradition. Santander's interpretations of Zorn's work aim to begin a discourse among those who both play and appreciate music. This book will hold special appeal for musicians who are interested in learning more about Zorn's works for the keyboard, as well as anyone who enjoys listening to Zorn's music.

That Man in the Gold Lamé Suit offers a fresh, original, and dynamic examination of Phil Ochs, the often overlooked topical folk singer of the 1960s who wrote the soundtrack to that era's antiwar movement and so much more. That Man in the Gold Lamé Suit explores who Phil Ochs was as he saw and understood himself to be; how he wanted to see himself; and how he wanted to be seen by others. In presenting this exploration of Phil Ochs, author Jim Bowers delves deep into Ochs's personality to craft a narrative that allows the singer/songwriter to tell his own story rather than the story others would impose upon him. In letting Ochs tell his own story, Bowers in That Man in the Gold Lamé Suit provides the reader with insights into how Phil Ochs's search for self came to define who Ochs really was and how it, in turn, shaped his music, his politics, and his relationships with such contemporaries as Bob Dylan.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Satchel and Bobby Kennedy, a sweeping group portrait of the pioneers and longtime kings of jazz?Duke Ellington, Satchmo Armstrong, and Count Basie?who, born within a few years of one another, overcame racist exclusion and violence to become the most popular entertainers in America. This is the story of three revolutionary American musicians, the maestro jazzmen who orchestrated the chords that throb at the soul of twentieth-century America.Duke Ellington, the grandson of slaves who was christened Edward Kennedy Ellington, was a man whose story is as layered and nuanced as his name suggests and whose music transcended category.Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in a New Orleans slum so tough it was called The Battlefield and, at age seven, got his first musical instrument, a ten-cent tin horn that drew buyers to his rag-peddling wagon and set him on the road to elevating jazz into a pulsating force for spontaneity and freedom.William James Basie, too, grew up in a world unfamiliar to white fans?the son of a coachman and laundress who dreamed of escaping every time the traveling carnival swept into town, and who finally engineered his getaway with help from Fats Waller. What is far less known about these groundbreakers is that they were bound not just by their music or even the discrimination that they, like so many black performers of their day, routinely encountered. Each defied and ultimately overcame racial boundaries not by waging war over every slight, which never would have worked in that Jim Crow era, but by opening America's eyes and souls to the magnificence of their music. In the process they wrote the soundtrack for the civil rights movement.Based on more than 250 interviews, this exhaustively researched book brings alive the history of Black America in the early-to-mid 1900s through the singular lens of the country's most gifted, engaging, and enduring African-American musicians.

Rocking the Wall explores the epic Bruce Springsteen concert in East Berlin on July 19, 1988, and how it changed the world. The drama of In Cold Blood meets the stylings of a Coen brothers film in this long-lost manuscript from musicologist Robert “Mack” McCormick, whose research on blues icon Robert Johnson's mysterious life and death became as much of a myth as the musician himself "This is a human and humane book, an insightful exploration of the biographer’s craft. [...] McCormick’s book makes you feel what we lost when Johnson died young." —New York Times "Reads like noir fiction. It's a detective story riddled with fatalism and ambiguity carried out by someone who, like the archetypal noir hero, isn't a detective but an ordinary guy in a dismal, often violent setting searching for what can't be found." —Wall Street JournalWhen blues master Robert Johnson’s little-known recordings were rereleased to great fanfare in the 1960s, little was known about his life, giving rise to legends that he gained success by selling his soul to the devil. Biography of a Phantom: A Robert Johnson Blues Odyssey is musicologist Mack McCormick's all-consuming search, from the late 1960s until McCormick’s death in 2015, to uncover Johnson's life story. McCormick spent decades reconstructing Johnson's mysterious life and developing theories about his untimely death at the age of 27, but never made public his discoveries. Biography of a Phantom publishes his compelling work for the first time, including 40 unseen black-and-white photographs documenting his search. While knocking on doors and sleuthing for Johnson's loved ones and friends, McCormick documents a Mississippi landscape ravaged by the racism of paternalistic white landowners and county sheriffs. An editor's preface and afterword from Smithsonian curator John W. Troutman provides context as well as troubling details about McCormick’s own impact on Johnson’s family and illuminates through McCormick’s archive the complex legacy of white male enthusiasts assuming authority over Black people’s stories and the history of the blues. While Johnson died before achieving widespread recognition, his music took on a life of its own and inspired future generations. Biography of a Phantom, filled with lush descriptive fieldwork and photographs, is an important historical object that deepens the understanding of a stellar musician.

English Methodist leader Charles Wesley is renowned for his prolific hymn writing and prominence in the church; his journal sheds ample light into his life as a young student and believer. This volume takes us to when Wesley was thirty-one years old in 1739. It offers profound insight into the attitude and daily life of the young Christian, at a time prior to his gaining great renown both as a prodigious songwriter and a man of distinction in the Methodist church. It is clear from the outset that Wesley was a caring man concerned with the well-being of parishioners and his fellow Christian; he describes those he encounters and converses with in a sensitive, graceful manner.Upon these pages is ample evidence of the determination and vigor contained within the character of Charles Wesley. The impressive quotations of scripture, and the easy flow with which he recounts events and principles of Christian spirituality, form a picture of a motivated and talented young believer who would go on to be one of the most prolific hymnists ever. Used as a source in later biographies, the Journal of Charles Wesley nevertheless stands on its own as a worthwhile read.

  • af Bob Spitz
    232,95 kr.

No one before or since has lived the rock star dream quite like Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. Spitz separates the myth from the reality, starting with the opening notes of their first album as the band announced itself as a collision of grand artistic ambition and brute primal force, of English folk music and hard-driving African-American blues. Taken together, Led Zeppelin's discography has spent an almost incomprehensible ten-plus years on the album charts; the band is notoriously guarded. Spitz brings the band's artistic journey to full and vivid life. He shows that not all the legends are true, but what is true is astonishing, and sometimes disturbing. -- adapted from jacket

  • af Dave Bidini
    187,95 kr.

David Bidini, rhythm guitarist with the Rheostatics, knows all too well what the life of a rock band in Canada involves: storied arenas one tour and bars wallpapered with photos of forgotten bands the next. Zit-speckled fans begging for a guitar pick and angry drunks chucking twenty-sixers and pint glasses. Opulent tour buses riding through apocalyptic snowstorms and cramped vans that reek of dope and beer. Brilliant performances and heart-sinking break-ups.Bidini has played all across the country many times, in venues as far flung and unalike as Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and the Royal Albert Hotel in Winnipeg. In 1996, when the Rheostatics opened for the Tragically Hip on their Trouble at the Henhouse tour, Bidini kept a diary. In On a Cold Road he weaves his colourful tales about that tour with revealing and hilarious anecdotes from the pioneers of Canadian rock - including BTO, Goddo, the Stampeders, Max Webster, Crowbar, the Guess Who, Triumph, Trooper, Bruce Cockburn, Gale Garnett, and Tommy Chong - whom Bidini later interviewed in an effort to compare their experiences with his. The result is an original, vivid, and unforgettable picture of what it has meant, for the last forty years, to be a rock musician in Canada.
