This book presents new research findings on different aspects of Russian society, both showing how there was much reform before 1917, and much continuity afterwards. The attitude of Russia towards climate change is extremely important for the success of climate change control policies worldwide, as Russia, with its cold climate and vast resources of carbon fuels, is one of the worldΓÇÖs biggest polluters. Moreover, Russia frequently comes across as not being very interested in containing environmental pollution. This book explores how issues to do with climate change are handled by the Russian media. It discusses how the state and economic elites have influenced RussiaΓÇÖs environmental communication, with the stateΓÇÖs control of the media strengthening since Putin came to power, and with control being exercised in some cases by ignoring or silencing the key issues. However, the book also shows how, recently, elites and the state in Russia have begun to realise that it is in the stateΓÇÖs best interest to pursue more climate-oriented policies. The book concludes by examining how the communication of climate change issues in Russia could be improved and by assessing the extent to which a recent change in state climate policy could mean that media coverage of climate change in Russia will keep increasing.

Russia, one of the world's most ethno-culturally diverse countries, provides a rich case study on how globalisation and associated international trends are disrupting, and causing radical rethinking of approaches to, inter-ethnic cohesion. The book highlights the importance of television broadcasting in shaping national discourse and the place of ethno-cultural diversity within it, arguing that television¿s role has been reinforced, rather than diminished, by the rise of new media technologies. Throughout, the book shows how difficult it is for Russia to strike the right balance given its Soviet legacy, weak civil society, extremely large native Muslim population, and state aligned media.
The Soviet Union's collapse has had long-lasting impacts on Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia: changes in state-society relations, reconfiguration of political, economic and social ties, resurgence of regional conflicts, and new migration patterns towards Russia and the European Union. Meanwhile, the EU has emerged as an important regional player, engaging neighbouring states in cross-border regional co-operation. This book explores questions related to borders, security and migration in the emerging "European Neighbourhood", and the potential role of the EU as a stabilizing force.
