The volume contains studies on Ramon Llull (1232-1316) in a variety of different languages. They are the fruit of a symposium organized by German and Spanish foundations and reflect the main lines of present-day research on the philosophical roots of Llull's "art of finding the truth", his relations to Judaism and Islam, his influence on Nicholas of Cusa and his personality as an author of literary works. In addition various other aspects of "Lullism" are dealt with which cast light on the overall achievement of the Catalan philosopher and convey a vivid impression of his extraordinarily dynamic personality.
Why the Twenties? Recent scholarship has been pointing out more and more clearly that in Spain, too, the Twenties were a period in which both radical and varied change was being striven for. An obsolete mainstream cultural practice was being confronted by an increasing interest in such novelties as sports, jazz-bands, silent movies or even the first stirrings of feminism. It is the decade of reviews promoting various -isms, from ultraism to surrealism, and of Valle-Inclán's grotesque esperpento, which heralded the fall of Primo de Rivera's dictatorship. The essays assembled here treat some of these and many other aspects. The authors base their contributions on recent criticism and many years of dedication to the field, and propose new directions for fertile future investigations.
The volume assembles the papers delivered at the International Colloquium of the Latin American Studies Center (CELA) of the University of Mainz at Germersheim in June 1997. The topics of the contributions mirror the research interests of the Spanish Studies scholars working at CELA and their guests: history of Colombia, Venezuela and the Spanish Caribbean; cultural and linguistic identity; Afro-Hispanic linguistics; modern Colombian and Venezuelan literature.
This volume is devoted to an examination of the vast range of relations existing between Brazil and its Hispano-American neighbours. The Latin American context in which Brazil is embedded is determined by a multifarious network of bi- and multi-lateral relations that has been given little attention by scholars so far. The volume sets out to make a contribution to a closer engagement with the intercultural dynamics informing those relations. The cross-disciplinary aspect is very marked. Alongside articles from representatives of literary and film studies, philosophy, and the social and political sciences, there are also studies illuminating theological, historical, and anthropological aspects.
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the conference »Palenque, Cartagena y Afro-Caribe conexiones históricas y lingüísticas, Cartagena, Colombia«, held at the University of Cartagena in late 1996. The volume features 17 articles by leading figures in the fields of Afro-Hispanic linguistics, creolistics, history, and anthropology. It reflects the state of the art on Palenquero research, and is representative of scholars' special interests in Palenquero.
