Freshwater Biodiversity is a much underestimated component of global biodiversity, both in its diversity and in its potential to act as models for fundamental research in evolutionary biology and ecosystem studies.

Most of the diadromous fish of the world have decreased in distribution and abundance since the beginning of the twentieth century. The causes of these trends vary among species and basins but regional human impact (damming, pollution, fisheries) and global change (climate) are suspected to be responsible for these difficulties.

Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments.This book provides a first review in this field.

This book presents the latest advances in Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) mapping and modeling and introduces the environmental approach to EFH identification through the combined use of latest technologies and advanced techniques.

The main themes of the Symposium were biodiversity in enclosed and semi-enclosed seas and artificial habitats, and the restoration of degraded systems. The papers dealing with the first theme represent current research and concerns about marine biodiversity in enclosed seas.

The monitoring of benthic diatoms, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish will be the backbone of future water management in Europe.
