The book provides a critical overview of the literacy debate in academic and general educational discourse; the role of functional literacy in societal development programmes during the past two decades; and a critical evaluation of the issues that surround literacy in an increasingly computer-dominated world.

The idea behind this book is that in complex societies like our own there are different worlds of literacy that exist side by side. This book presents a range of case studies describing some of these worlds of literacy and is carefully organised by theme, so as to bring out both the differences and connections between them.

This book provides much needed evidence from research in a rural community in Sub-Saharan Africa, that show the value of literacy in increasing the life chances of women. It concludes with macro and micro level policy options that are necessary for critical (re)construction of women's lives in the region and elsewhere.

This text looks at how computers are being used in primary classrooms and how they could be used better. Its three sections focus upon: how do we investigate learning through talk around computers? What affects the quality of group work around computers? What can teachers do to improve this?
