Slate is a cliffhanger -- a person who tracks down specific books on the skyscraper-like shelves deep within the Library of Doom. Slate boasts that he can find any book, even the one that no Librarian has been able to locate: THE SCRAWLER. But before Slate can locate the long-lost book, he finds more than he bargained for .

In the heart of the Library of Doom, within the Librarian's secret chamber, is a sealed, invisible vault. It contains a single book -- a book so poisonous that it drains the Librarian's life away day by day, year by year. There's just one problem: only another Librarian would know where the book was located .

Late one night, two friends hurry home after a birthday party ends. On the way, they spy a small lending library that hadn't been there before the party. They find themselves trapped in a dark world with a shadowy beast that has a taste for voracious readers .

One night, a young student's thesaurus disappears from her bedroom. A trail of slimy footprints leads to the bedroom window, so she looks outside and sees the thesaurus down below in the grass. Then, suddenly, a colossal monster unfolds itself from the pages of the thesaurus like an origami creation gone terribly wrong.
