Verbs of Desire underwent important changes in the course of their histories. In earlier English they could be used impersonally in constructions lacking a nominative subject. When impersonal uses are lost, they are gradually replaced by personal patterns, in particular a pattern where the verb governs a prepositional complement.
This volume explores discourse mainly through corpus linguistics methods. Indeed, Corpus Assisted Discourse Studies has become a widely used methodology for the critical (or non-critical) analysis of discourses in recent times.
The monograph focuses on the characterization and history of the English reaction object construction (ROC) from the perspective of Diachronic Construction Grammar.
In the early nineteenth century the theory and practice of translation received special attention in Italy, a country that was still trying to define itself. Translation, particularly from English, became a means of enriching the Italian language, culture and literature, laying the foundations for the construction of a new national identity.
The volume examines the role of context in the production and reception of historical news texts from the 17th until the 20th centuries. The authors use various methodological approaches comprising historical pragmatics and corpus linguistics. The volume is divided into: British News Contexts, International News Contexts, and Advertising Contexts
This book explores if/si-constructions in spoken English, French and Spanish, from a functional-pragmatic and corpus-based perspective. The data are retrieved from parliamentary discourse and conversations corpora.
This volume aims at bridging the gap between LSP translation, gender issues, and the professional world. The purpose is to broaden the discussion on gender awareness in LSP and translation.
This book approaches metaphor in specialised discourses, covering various fields. The studies presented in the book adopt different research frameworks, ranging from pragmatics to conceptual metaphor theory, among others.
This book explores subjectless ing- and ed-supplement constructions in the recent history of English from a corpus-based perspective in an attempt to provide their syntactic and semantic characterisation in terms of prototypicality and to describe diachronic variation in Late Modern and Present-day English.
This book illustrates the advantage of a diachronic perspective to learning and teaching language and translation. This perspective is applied to English spelling pedagogy, translation studies, bilingual education, approaches to teaching culture, new genre development, aspects of legal English, and meaning shifts in American lexis.
This book is concerned with frequency in foreign language learning, in particular with contrastive frequency across English and Italian, and to what degree this is captured in dictionaries. With the aid of corpus analysis, this survey brings out unexpected frequency differences in the areas of lexis, grammar and collocation.
The book presents the Triple-Decker Model that describes the interactive mechanism among key constituents of English for Specific Purposes Ability (ESPA): language knowledge, strategic competence and background knowledge (nursing knowledge).
This volume focuses on vocabulary size, vocabulary knowledge, affix acquisition, pronunciation, translanguaging, language learning strategies, considerations of oral participation and academic adaptation. Contexts explored are Australia, Chile, China, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand. Education levels explored are elementary, secondary and tertiary.

The specialised language of fashion draws the research interest of linguists and semioticians as well as communication experts and fashion historians. This volume contributes to advancing the knowledge of crucial aspects in the language of fashion that still need deep investigation. It brings together contributions that shed light on the morphological, lexical, pragmatic, and cultural aspects of the language of fashion, without ignoring cognitive and semiotic phenomena. The diversity of topics and perspectives of the chapters presented here testifies to the variety and vitality of scientific research in the complex and multifaceted language of fashion.
This volume is a collection of studies dealing with age or, rather, ages, mainly from a linguistic viewpoint, but also accommodating inputs from other disciplinary perspectives. It focuses on the linguistic, social, economic and ethical aspects of social groups defined in terms of age ¿ which clearly includes seniors but is, of course, not limited to that. In a global setting where spaces are constantly being redefined, new technologies and phenomena like the COVID-19 pandemic exert a substantial influence on how ages are perceived, seen and constructed. Within such a complex and multi-layered context, the chapters of this book provide attempts at showcasing realities connected with language, ages and, in general, the discourses surrounding them.
Evidentiality and Epistemic Modality: Conceptual and Descriptive Issues presents ground-breaking research on the domains of evidentiality and epistemic modality. The book includes papers on key theoretical issues (the nature of evidential inference and the challengeability criterion for evidentiality), and descriptive studies covering various European languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Romanian, Catalan and Latvian), based on general corpora or specific discourse types. The prominent corpus-based contrastive methodology uncovers a wide range of idiosyncratic discourse-pragmatic features of diverse languages, discourses and genres. The contributions are representative of the work on evidentiality and epistemic modality in a substantial number of countries.
This book focuses on the linguistic needs of university students enrolled in English Medium Instruction (EMI) programmes in which disciplinary subjects are taught in English, a practice that has significantly risen over the last 20 years. It includes seven online, self-study modules (Creating outlines, concept maps, writing definitions, writing summaries, reporting data, the language of presentations and writing abstracts) that were designed after conducting specific research into students¿ needs in terms of academic genres and language functions. All these modules were piloted with students in different degree programmes. The piloting confirmed the suitability of the materials for EMI undergraduate and postgraduate learners and the benefits of following a genre-based approach in this specific context.
The book explores finite and nonfinite clausal verb complementation in World Englishes. It provides an assessment of the influence of language contact, simplicity and transparency, geographical proximity, and evolutionary phase on this alternation. On the one hand, a quantitative analysis of GloWbE data through different statistical tests proves the effects of these factors on the choice between finite that-clauses and nonfinite -ing clauses. A number of intra-linguistic factors are also considered as potential explanatory factors. On the other hand, a detailed, manual, qualitative analysis results in the discovery of a series of new verb complementation structures available in English varieties around the world.
Fraseografia) e tramandare (IV. Fraseodidattica) tali espressioni così eloquenti e saporite.
The main assumption proposed in this book is that legislative drafting represents an example of professional discourse, where the propositions of specialized information is translated into meanings, and such meanings are given as input to the rules and strategies of grammatical formulation. A relevant question for our understanding of modern legislative process is related to the effects of ¿context¿ at different levels, within which legislative process takes place. By looking at those levels, the analysis conducted in the book demonstrates that it becomes possible to reach a deeper understanding of the professional groups taking part in the process, better assess the lexico-grammatical and textual features of its final product (i.e., normative texts), and suggest alternative linguistic and textual strategies aimed at making texts more accessible to potential readers and/or intended users.
