Ten years ago, at the International Botanical Congress in Edinburgh, a group of us from various countries discussed the difficulty of pursuing academic problems in depth at such meetings. A little known, but remarkably understanding group becoming visible was the Science Committee and the Division of Scientific Affairs of N.

The concept of a specialist workshop to address this problem was borne during conversations at the Gordon Research Conference on "Hicrobiological Safety of Foods" in Plymouth, New Hampshire, in July 1982.

The advent of hybridoma technology leading to the successful produc tion of monoclonal antibodies against a variety of tumor-associated antigens has, during the last decade, provided a very powerful tool for research and clinical investigations.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "Surface Membrane Receptors: Interface Between Cells and Environment" was held in Bellagio, Italy September 13-21, 1975.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute held in the Hotel Metropole Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales from July 26th to August 4th 1981 provided an excellent platform for presentation and appraisal of our current knowledge of neurotransmitter systems.

The NATO - EMBO Advanced Study Institute - Lecture Course on "CHROMOSOME DAMAGE AND REPAIR" was held at Godcysund Fjord Hotel outside Bergen, Norway. In addition to the for mal lectures, a number of short contributions presented in the dis cussion sessions following the lectures are also included.

This volume, the sixth in the series "The Prostaglandin System" assembles most of the lecture notes from the International School of Pharmacology on "Prostanoids and Drugs" that took place in Erice, Sicily, at the "Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture" on Sept 5-15, 1989.

This volume is arecord of the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study institute on "Biochemical and Bio­ logical Markers of Neoplastic Transformation" held September 28 - October 8, 1981, at Corfu, Greece. As early as 1860, Rudolf Virchow provided the first genetic concept of cancer by postulating "Omnia ceZZuZa e ceZZuZa ejusdem generis", a modification of the then exisiting cell theory "Omnis ceZZuZa e ceZZuZa". Thus, the idea that all cells originate from the parent cell was extended to the idea that all cancer cells come from the "paren t" cancer cello But how the first cancer cell arose, or in other words, how anormal cell changed to a cancer cell, is, even after 120 years, a mystery. Experimental studies of the past have convinced us that a number of factors contribute to the neoplastic transformation of anormal cell, but our knowledge on the mechanisms involved in this process is still in an embryonic state. In the last few years, however, this field has witnessed a most remarkable advancement cata­ lyzed by the development of modern technology in the al lied fields of immunology, the production of mono­ clonal antibodies, molecular biology, and sequencing v PREFACE and cloning of ONC genes. Presently, it is becoming more and more evident to the wishful mind of those engaged in this research that we are approaching a turning point. Thus, an assessment of the present situa­ tion will be most desirable at this time.

However, since the beginning of the final quarter of the twentieth century, few attempts have been made to organize and integrate information applying our knowledge of the regulation of plant growth to the enhancement of the world's yield of food, forage, fiber, and other useful plants.

The idea to hold an ASI on Sensory Ecology evolved slowly, main ly due to my own research interest in the past and partly to the discussions I had with a number of colleagues, particularly Dr. John Lythgoe of the University of Sussex.

A volume on the biliary system appeared in 1965, based on a symposium of the NATO Advanced Institute held in September, 1963, in Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
