Diese erste umfassende Studie uber das Werk Friedrich Schleiermachers in gendertheoretischer Perspektive untersucht die Entwicklung seines Denkens im Blick auf die zeitgenossische Geschlechterdebatte. Sie arbeitet heraus, dass Schleiermachers Konzept der egalitaren Geschlechterkomplementaritat grundlegende Bedeutung fur seine philosophische Ethik wie auch fur seine Theologie besitzt. Die Analyse zentraler Texte Schleiermachers zeigt, wie dieses Geschlechterkonzept seine Anthropologie und Ehetheologie pragt und wie die Verbindung von Geschlechterkonzept und Religionstheorie zu einer weiblichen Kodierung des Religiosen fuhrt, die Schleiermacher zum theoretischen Vorlaufer einer Feminisierung der Religion im Rahmen der burgerlichen Geschlechterordnung des 19. Jahrhunderts macht.

Paul Tillich setzt sich von 1909-1912 intensiv mit der Philosophie Friedrich Schellings auseinander. Dieser Prozess mundet in die beiden akademischen Qualifikationsschriften Tillichs. Im Zuge seiner Beschaftigung mit diesem Typus idealistischer Philosophie kristallisieren sich die Grundzuge seiner fruhen Christologie heraus, zu deren Explikation sich Tillich derjenigen Kategorien bedient, die auch schon im Zentrum der Christologie Schellings gestanden haben - Offenbarung und Geschichte. Es ist die Aufgabe dieser Studie, die Herausbildung der fruhen Christologie Tillichs vor dem Hintergrund von Schellings christologischem Ansatz historisch-genetisch zu interpretieren, zu welchem Zweck bisher unveroffentlichtes Quellenmaterial hinzugezogen wird, das im Anhang publiziert ist. Ausgehend von der kategorialen Durchdringung des fruhen christologischen Programms Tillichs gilt es, dessen systematische Reichweite bis in das Spatwerk hinein auszuloten. Auf diesem Wege wird ein Terrain erschlossen, von dem aus das intellektuelle Profil dieses groen Auenseiters der Theologiegeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts bewertet wird.

although Hans Urs von Balthasar's earliest publication is from 1925, and although he was a mature forty years old in 1945, there is a deficiency in the secondary literature regarding his early literature, its historical backgrounds and non-theological sources. In this study Balthasar is presented in relation to the various contexts in which he was both drawing upon and responding to from the 1920s to the 1940s. The major contexts analyzed here are the broad central European Germanophone cultural context, the Germanophone Catholic cultural context, the German studies context, the French Catholic renewal literature and theology of the early 20th-century, the popular journal Stimmen der Zeit, Neo-Scholasticism, early 20th-century French Catholic culture, Swiss fascism, National Socialist literature, the Renouveau Catholique, the George-Kreis and many others. Balthasar's early anti-Semitism and some of the problematic aspects of his early work are also addressed in this study. His understanding of the modern age, his relationships with some key intellectual figures and his later reflections on his early work are also introduced. The book offers a comprehensive study of Balthasar's early intellectual development.

The sweetness of music is something that has puzzled Christian theologians for centuries. In this study, Luther's theology of music is approached from the point of view of pleasure. It examines the significance of joy, beauty and pleasure in relationship with music and Luther's theology. The notion of music as the supreme gift of God requires also a discussion about the idea of 'gift'. Music opens up new perspectives into Luther's thinking. Luther has seldom been reckoned among aesthetic theologians. Nevertheless, Luther has a peculiar view on beauty, understanding faith as a kind of aesthetic contemplation.

John Henry Newman (1801-1890), Dozent in Oxford, anglikanischer Priester und romischer Kardinal, ist der bedeutendste und theologisch einflussreichste Konvertit der neuzeitlichen britischen Geschichte. Als Leitstern der katholischen Erneuerung seit dem ersten Weltkrieg wurde er einer der Vater des zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils. Seine Konversion ist eine lebenslang vorbereitete Wende: Er war zunachst protestantischer Biblizist, dann evangelikaler Calvinist, liberaler Freidenker, griechisch-orthodoxer Sympathisant, anglikanischer Hochkirchler und schlielich romischer Katholik. Die vorliegende Studie ist die erste protestantische Monografie zum Thema. Sie bietet eine grundliche Auseinandersetzung mit Newmans Argumenten, blickt auf die biografischen Kontexte seiner Motive, uberlegt, ob sich in einer protestantischen Selbstkritik etwas aus ihnen lernen lasst, und fragt, ob Newmans scharfsinnige wie verfuhrerische Apologie wirklich tragfahig ist.
