Autodidatta, gira per anni la Russia e svolge una serie di lavori umili che saranno successivamente fonte di ispirazione per i suoi primi scritti, incentrati sulle figure dei vagabondi russi. Dopo un periodo di propaganda e celebrazione del comunismo, Gorkij raggiunge il successo nel 1898, quando pubblica la raccolta in due volumi delle sue novelle. Nel 1905, coinvolto nei moti rivoluzionari, viene arrestato. È in questo periodo di vicinanza agli ambienti rivoluzionari che i suoi scritti assumono un risvolto sociale, inziando la corrente del "realismo socialista". Studiò nell’università di Città del Capo. Nel 1905 fece ritorno a Lisbona, dove cominciò a lavorare come corrispondente commerciale.
