Audienssalen på Frederiksborg Slot er et af de smukkeste og mest interessante barokrum i Danmark. Salen og den tilstødende gallerigang overlevede mirakuløst en slotsbrand i 1859 og er for nylig blevet restaureret, så den fremstår med samme pragt, som da Christian V’s generalbygmester, Lambert van Haven, lod den indrette i 1680’erne. Salen har dannet ramme om enevældige kongers modtagelser, og alle udsmykningens elementer smelter sammen i en hyldest til kongen. Mellem de marmorerede paneler er indfældet portrætter af de oldenborgske konger, og ovenover er de danske sejre under Skånske Krig. Fra en kuppel nærmest svæver stukengle ned fra himlen med Christian V’s krone og monogram. I denne bog fortælles hele den fascinerende historie om, hvordan det prægtige rum er blevet indrettet og brugt gennem historien, ligesom man kan læse om den omfattende restaurering. Slavepræsten er en nyfortolkning af præsten Oluf Egilssons (1564-1639) korte beretning. Den blev første gang trykt og udgivet på dansk i 1740. Fortællingen begynder, da de islandske Vestmannaøer i 1627 bliver angrebet af muslimske sørøvere, fortsætter med beretningen om deres tid som slaver i Algier og ender med, hvordan det mirakuløst lykkes en stor del af dem at vende hjem igen.Uddrag af bogenDe mange islændinge blev fra det danske hus efterhånden fragtet ud til de store skibe. Dette foregik i mindre robåde, som de selv blev beordret til at ro. På skibene blev så flere af mændene lagt i jern, mens de øvrige i hvert fald til at begynde med kunne bevæge sig temmelig frit omkring. Fangerne fik snart noget brød at spise samt noget ”surt vand” at drikke. Robådene sejlede i fast rutefart mellem skibene og havnen, og alle fangerne blev på den måde befordret ud til de store skibe. Da alle var kommet ombord, begyndte søfolkene at binde de voksne fanger, der endnu ikke var lagt i jern. Det skulle ikke være muligt for dem at starte et oprør eller på anden måde gøre det mere besværligt end højst nødvendigt for deres fangevogtere. Frans Hals is one of the most important portrait painters of all time. He was the first artist in Holland to paint social outsiders and genre figures as well as the middle classes, thus giving hitherto unknown visibility to marginalized groups in society. Hals' works are characterized by an unusual liveliness and apt characterization. His sketch-like paintings, executed with loose, bold brushstrokes, had a decisive influence on modernist painting.  In addition to a large selection of paintings by Hals, the comprehensive catalogue accompanying the Berlin exhibition also shows works by those around him and situates him as an exceptional figure in the context of his time. Among the 70 works illustrated and presented with concise catalog entries are around 50 of Hals' most important paintings from collections in Europe, the USA and Canada-including highlights such as Isaac Abrahamsz.
