Mamayh ar-Rumi ad-DimaSqi was one of the most significant Damascan poets in the 10th/16th century, whose verses were sung from Damascus to Yemen. Based on the current results of the ongoing edition of Mamayh's diwan (Rawdat al-muStaq wa-bahgat al-'uSSaq "Garden of the ardent yearner and the joy of the lovers") this study discusses a selection of poems in which the poet converses with the literary past by not only using mimetic and emulative techniques (like tadmin, iqtibas, and tahmis poems) but also through the use of more modern styles, forms and topics (like 'atil verses, coffee poems, and vernacular poems). While the mimetic poems refer directly to the admired or canonized models of the past perpetuating the tradition into the poet's present, the focus of the contemporary topics in the diwan is on how the poet's present is connected to the poetic and aesthetic practices of the past. With the analysis of Mamayh's poetry, the study offers evidence of the impressive literary and intellectual background of an initially Ottomanized and then 'Syrianized' (former soldier-) poet, as well as his tremendous poetic creativity in melding together the 'old' and the 'new' in his verse.

Peter Margetts was a successful property developer in Dubai when the city-state's economy collapsed sending his company into bankruptcy. Post-dated cheques he'd written to investors were worthless. Along with hundreds of other businessmen, including Americans, he was arrested under Dubai's draconian cheque laws and thrown into Central Jail with a life sentence. Locked up with hardened criminals from all over the world he struggled to survive in a world of drug warlords and mafia bosses. But Peter was no quitter and whilst making friends with gangsters, witnessing a murder and a firing-squad execution, he went on hunger strike to bring his plight to world attention. Peter's case was even raised in the British Parliament. Gripping and powerful, When's Daddy Coming Home? is also brutally funny and a painful insight into Dubai few know...or talk about.

“A story of love and courage amid brutality and terror, this is the testimony of a child who has endured the unthinkable.” —J.K. Rowling “I’m very afraid I will die tonight.” —Bana Alabed, Twitter, October 2, 2016 “Stop killing us.” —Bana Alabed, Twitter, October 6, 2016 “I just want to live without fear.” —Bana Alabed, Twitter, October 12, 2016When seven-year-old Bana Alabed took to Twitter to describe the horrors she and her family were experiencing in war-torn Syria, her heartrending messages touched the world and gave a voice to millions of innocent children. Bana’s happy childhood was abruptly upended by civil war when she was only three years old. Over the next four years, she knew nothing but bombing, destruction, and fear. Her harrowing ordeal culminated in a brutal siege where she, her parents, and two younger brothers were trapped in Aleppo, with little access to food, water, medicine, or other necessities. Facing death as bombs relentlessly fell around them—one of which completely destroyed their home—Bana and her family embarked on a perilous escape to Turkey. In Bana’s own words, and featuring short, affecting chapters by her mother, Fatemah, Dear World is not just a gripping account of a family endangered by war; it offers a uniquely intimate, child’s perspective on one of the biggest humanitarian crises in history. Bana has lost her best friend, her school, her home, and her homeland. But she has not lost her hope—for herself and for other children around the world who are victims and refugees of war and deserve better lives. Dear World is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, the unconquerable courage of a child, and the abiding power of hope. It is a story that will leave you changed.

This book is about an actual journey into the heart of the Islamic world, Saudi Arabia. It tells of the discoveries and revelations about the history of the Middle East, Islam, and Muslims. The book's main proposition is connecting the dots between the early Islamic State at the time of the Prophet Muhammad and modern-day terrorism and radicalism. The author presents new findings about the true history of Islam. The findings are about the theology of Islam, the language of the Quran, the history of radical Islam, the influence of Salafism and Wahabism on political Islam, and the social life of Muslims. The book presents an unprecedented analysis of the Quran and an empirical study of the psychological effect of the language of the Quran; there is also a historical and a sociological approach to understand Islam that has never been attempted before. In addition, the book exposes the goals and plans of terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, Taliban, ISIS, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, and the Muslim Brotherhood and their followers who want to take over the world, enforce Islamic Sharia law, and destroy human civilization. The book also explores the beauty of literature and how it can defeat Islamic radicalism, and how literature can be used to change the rigid mindset of some radicals. In addition, the book shows how peaceful Muslims become victims to those extremists and terrorists. It is hoped that radical Muslims would show little humbleness and some humility after they know what their religion is about and learn the truth of the Quran. This book is a rational analysis of the past and the present of the Middle East and Islam, the authenticity of the Quran, the life of Muslims under Sharia law, and the control of the clergy over the lives of Muslims, but it warns of the lurking danger of radical Islam that might jeopardize human civilization if it is not stopped immediately. The author of this book, Sami Benjamin, was born in Egypt in 1949. He was raised as a Muslim in a Cairo neighborhood. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1985. Currently, he works in a publishing company in London since 2012. The author lives with his wife in a London suburb. He has three children and six grandchildren.
The true and fascinating origin story of Saudia Arabia.Ibn Saud grew to manhood living the harsh traditional life of the desert nomad, a life that had changed little since the days of Abraham. Equipped with immense physical courage, he fought and wonoften with weapons and tactics not unlike those employed by the ancient Assyriansa series of astonishing military victories over a succession of enemies much more powerful than himself. Over the same period, he transformed himself from a minor sheikh into a revered king and elder statesman, courted by world leaders such as Churchill and Roosevelt. A passionate lover of women, Ibn Saud took many wives, had numerous concubines, and fathered almost one hundred children. Yet he remained an unswerving and devout Muslim, described by one who knew him well at the time of his death in 1953 as probably the greatest Arab since the Prophet Muhammad.”Saudi Arabia, the country Ibn Saud created, is a staunch ally of the West, but it is also the birthplace of Osama bin Laden and fifteen of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers. Saud’s kingdom, as it now stands, has survived the vicissitudes of time and become an invaluable player on the world’s political stage.Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs.
Concepts such as influence, imitation, emulation, transmission or plagiarism are transcendental to cultural history and the subject of universal debate. They are not mere labels imposed by modern historiography on ancient texts, nor are they the result of a later interpretation of ways of transmitting and teaching, but are concepts defined and discussed internally, within all cultures, since time immemorial, which have yielded very diverse results. In the case of culture, or better Arab-Islamic cultures, we could analyze and discuss endlessly numerous terms that refer to concepts related to the multiple ways of perceiving the Other, receiving his knowledge and producing new knowledge. The purpose of this book evolves around these concepts, and it aims to become part of a very long tradition of studies on this subject that is essential to the understanding of the processes of reception and creation. The authors analyze them in depth through the use of examples that are based on the well-known idea that societies in different regions did not remain isolated and indifferent to the literary, religious or scientific creations that were developed in other territories and moreover that the flow of ideas did not always occur in only one direction. Contacts, both voluntary and involuntary, are never incidental or marginal, but are rather the true engine of the evolution of knowledge and creation. It can also be stated that it has been the awareness of the existence of multidimensional cultural relations which has allowed modern historiography on Arab cultures to evolve and be enriched in recent decades.
