After all, does freedom really feel completely free when you as an artist need to please large foundations or well-established museums? How do you express yourself artistically in hyper-sensitive times? AKA HØEGH has her very own style of expression within Greenlandic and Nordic art – deeply rooted in the vast landscape and dramatic world of myths and legends that is Greenland. She focuses on everyday feelings and the sanctity of nature in a time of major societal changes. She depicts mythical landscapes, dreams and futuristic visions in the light of global warming. She thinks big while staying humble: We only get to borrow the Earth, we’re all just guests in this life. Aka Høegh works with a wide range of styles and media – from brushwork and watercolours to granite sculptures, from etching a steel needle into zinc to paintings and the decoration of entire buildings. She has influenced and inspired Greenland’s art scene more than any other artist, and her art has travelled far and wide beyond the country’s borders. MAI MISFELDT is a press officer at Nordatlantens Brygge in Copenhagen. She has a joint degree in Danish and History of Art and is a former art and literature critic for Kristeligt Dagblad and Berlingske Tidende. She was a member of the Statens Kunstfonds Projektstøtteudvalg for Litteratur from 2018-21 (the Danish Art Council’s Literature funding body). Mai Misfeldt spent part of her childhood in Greenland, and Greenlandic art and literature hold a special interest for her.

The famous fairy tale "The Flying trunk" by H.C. Andersen is about the son of a rich merchant who squandered almost all the inheritance he inherited from his father. One of his former friends gave him a trunk. It turned out to be magical, as it could fly, and the merchant's son went to the land of Turks on it. He settled in the forest, and after learning that a beautiful princess lived in the city, to whom no one was allowed, he flew to her. And since the guy was a storyteller, he captivated the princess and her parents with his stories. This fairy tale will acquaint the little reader with the contrast of what’s natural and artificial, what occurs in nature, and what is made by man, and how the beauty of the former can be superior to the latter. This is conveyed through a mechanical bird and a real nightingale. The abilities of the artificial bird consist in resembling the sound of an organ barrel and playing a melodic tune, but it is the living sound of the nightingale that saves the emperor and fends off death when he is at his most difficult hour, all thewhile the mechanical clockwork of the artificial bird remains silent.

The Tinderbox is a tale about a brave, lucky soldier who managed to deceive a terrible witch, escape execution, and marry a beautiful princess. The soldier is presented to us as a dexterous and agile hero who managed to take possession of a magic Tinderbox, kill a witch, cheat the queen and king into both pardon his execution and marry their daughter, the princess he was in love with. But note that the main character can also be called frivolous and cruel. The illustrations of the talented artist Igor Oleynikov only emphasize the duality of the character of our soldier.

Umiddelbart er det ligetil. ZUSA skærer sit eget navn i bogstaver og sætter dem op, hvor vi andre ser det. Det er enkelt, det er genkendeligt, og det er let at forstå. Og hvad så? Det er meget mere end det. Intet er tilfældigt. Det handler om kontekst – og om fællesskab. Da gadekunsten bølgede frem i Danmark i midten af 00’erne, var præmissen, at kunstneren selv valgte udtryk, materialer og ikke mindst placering i det offentlige rum. Et hav af forskellige værker, metoder, teknikker og temaer vrimlede frem. Midt i dette virvar af gadekunstens overflødighedshorn dukkede ZUSAs navneskilte op på vægge, elkasser og bænke. I begyndelsen forekom det en smule naivt, men med tiden og med gentagelsen har ZUSAs værker udviklet sig til et væsentligt statement i det offentlige rum. Konsekvensen er klar. Motivet er hver gang de fire bogstaver i ZUSA, mens valget af typografi og farver varierer fra gang til gang. ZUSAs værker er – ligesom gadekunsten – afhængig af konteksten. Værkerne folder sig for alvor ud, når konteksten er i orden. De karakteristiske navneskilte er med årene blevet nogle af de gode venner, man hilser på, hver gang man cykler forbi. Kører i bus. Går tur. Eller bare er rundt i byen. Og man glæder sig over placeringen, udformningen, konteksten... ZUSA? Hvor stammer navnet fra? Det er en forkortelse af det tyske ord zusammen, der betyder at være fælles, at være sammen. Det er det, Zusa ønsker med sine navneskilte. In 1918 Wilhelm and Henny Hansen opened their home, Ordrupgaard in Charlottenlund, to visitors with an interest in art. Today the museum houses one of Northern Europe’s most important collections of Danish and French art of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century.The director of the museum, Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark, brings us close to Wilhelm Hansen and the Danish artists and works he collected in the years 1892 –1916. The Danish Golden Age is richly represented by C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Johan Thomas Lundbye, Wilhelm Marstrand and P.C. Skovgaard, but there are also artists from Wilhelm Hansen’s own time, including Vilhelm Hammershøi, Theodor Philipsen, L.A. Ring and Funen Painters such as Johannes Larsen, Fri Syberg and his childhood friend Peter Hansen. The book also features contemporary private photographs from Wilhelm Hansen’s homes.

The Choir Work honours the ancestors. They were the singers in the monasteries a thousand years ago who invented the alphabet of music called notes. They were the masters of Notre Dame in year 1200 that gave us the first amazing polyphony. They were the masters of late renaissance that perfected the art. They were all composers that understood the true nature of the choir whatever their time, place and styles were. Therefore the Choir Work is only a small part of a huge Choir Work going through the centuries – a link in chain. I have borrowed a vehicle for a short while: a lifetime to keep the unbroken tradition alive – changing and yet not-changing. The core remains.
