A classic adventure book in the spirit of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Heart of...
Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Three policemen have been killed over the course of a few days. Espinosa, chief of the 12th Precinct, doesn't have much to go on. When the body of a woman connected to one of the dead cops is found on the sidewalk below her apartment window, things get even more complicated, as a reputed "witness"--the wife of a high-ranking government official--becomes obsessed with the case, and with Espinosa. Nothing is quite as it first appears as Espinosa finds himself in his old haunts of Leme and Copacabana, and in the all-too-familiar terrain of corruption, greed, and fear.
A Rio de Janeiro ThrillerChief of the Copacabana precinct Espinosa is more than happy to interrupt his paperwork when a terrified young man arrives at the station with a bizarre story. A psychic has predicted that he would commit a murder, it seems, and the prediction has become fact in the young man's mind. As the weather changes and the southwesterly wind-always a sign of dramatic change-starts up, what at first seems like paranoia becomes brutal reality. Two violent murders occur, and their only link is the lonely, clever man who had sought Espinosa out a few days earlier for help.In Southwesterly Wind, the third in this atmospheric, erotic series featuring the inimitable Inspector Espinosa, Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza once again "breathes fresh air into the crime novel genre." (Los Angeles Times)
A Rio de Janeiro ThrillerA retired policeman spends a typically alcohol-filled evening with his girlfriend, a prostitute. When he wakes up the next morning, his wallet and car key are missing, his girlfriend has been murdered, and he can remember none of the events of the previous night. Inspector Espinosa, veteran detective and friend of the ex-cop, is convinced there's more here than meets the eye, and when other bodies begin turning up, he finds himself not only racing after a killer but falling in love.
A Rio de Janeiro ThrillerIn a parking garage in the center of Rio de Janeiro, corporate executive Ricardo Carvalho is found dead in his car, a bullet in his head, his wallet and briefcase missing. Inspector Espinosa is called in to investigate the apparent robbery and murder, but the world-weary Espinosa knows that things are not always as they seem. Carvalho's recently acquired one-million-dollar life insurance policy and the subsequent disappearance of his secretary Rose complicate matters-as does Espinosa's attraction to Carvalho's beautiful widow, one of the suspects. And when two more people turn up dead, Espinosa must speed up his investigation before anyone else becomes a casualty.
Capoeira is simultaneously a dance, a fight, and a game. Created by the Africans brought to Brazil as slaves beginning in 1500, capoeira was forbidden by law but survived underground. When open practice was allowed in the 1930s it soon became very popular. Capoeira came to America around 1975, and has become widely recognized by dancers and martial artists. The author discusses capoeira's evolution from Brazilian street play into a way of life. The philosophy of capoeira, and the practical and spiritual benefits of this philosophy, are also discussed. Instructions and exercises in intermediate and advanced skills take up where the author's previous book left off. The book includes 100 black-and-white photos and illustrations.
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER. The Old Patagonian Express chronicles Paul Theroux's train journey from his home in Boston, Massachusetts to the foot of South America, in 1978. Full of witty and sharp observations, Theroux goes out of his way to talk to as many locals as possible along the way.Starting with a rush-hour subway ride to South Station in Boston to catch the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, Theroux winds up on the poky, wandering Old Patagonian Express steam engine, which comes to a halt in a desolate land of cracked hills and thorn bushes. But, with Theroux, the view along the way is what matters: the monologuing Mr. Thornberry in Costa Rica, the bogus priest of Cali, and the celebrated writer, Jorge Luis Borges, who delights in having Theroux read Robert Louis Stevenson to him.
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Musicology - Ethnomusicology, grade: 1+, University of East London, language: English, abstract: Music brings people together, is spiritually uplifting and empowering. Among the 5000 languages that are spoken on planet earth, music is the only one that everyone understands.Despite its very rich music culture, Brazil¿s inequality remains one of the highest in the world and poverty levels in the Northeast are the highest in all of Latin America. This work suggests that the overall wellbeing and social development of northeastern Brazils poor population can be forged through improving investment and infrastructure of the cultural sector. Establishing a greater network of music schools and increasing access to ICT centers can fuel social change and transform poor people¿s lives. The project¿s main objectives will be to analyze the youth¿s present access to IT, which can be linked to music production skills and facilities, contact to independent labels, online networks and the creation of a fan and financial support base. This paper suggests that the Brazilian government underestimates young musicians and denies that they are a potential motor of increasing chances for socio-economic development in the Northeast of Brazil. A critical aspect of this work is the supposition that the government does not sufficiently address their services to the local needs of the poor. The first section of this paper introduces the reader to the major facts and figures on Brazil. The second section presents Brazilian music, in particular the music scene from the Northeast. Moreover the impacts that the process of globalization has on music are examined aiming to understand the present shift cultural industries are undergoing. The third section introduces latest trends in technology, particularly highlighting the importance of the Internet for sustainable development. A good ICT infrastructure has proven to play a crucial role for developing and emerging countries¿ development endeavors, thus this section places Brazil¿s fairly unevenly distributed national ICT network and unsatisfying access to computers into spotlight. Finally, the fourth section presents four role models for successful implementations of social and digital inclusion projects by the means of music and technology from Recife, Caracas and Rio de Janeiro. These case studies highlight the impact music and technology can have on the livelihood of the poor, outlining the capability of transforming the lives of thousands of individuals, their families and their communities in developing/emerging countries.

Peter trådte ind i hulen. Han havde faklen i hånden. Der var som i et feslot. Krystaller lyste. Drypsten lignede trolde.
This study sheds new light on the Brazilian communist movement and how the specter of the USSR influenced mid-twentieth century Brazilian foreign policy. Between 1918 and 1961, Brazil and the USSR maintained formal diplomatic ties for only thirty-one months, at the end of World War II. Yet, despite the official distance, the USSR is the only external actor whose behavior, real or imagined, influenced the structure of the Brazilian state in the twentieth century. In Brazil and the Soviet Challenge, 19171947, Stanley Hilton examines Brazilian policy toward the Soviet Union during this period. Drawing on American, British, and German diplomatic archives and unprecedented access to official and private Brazilian records, Hilton elucidates the connection between the Brazilian elite's perception of a communist threat and the creation of the authoritarian Estado Novo (19371945), the forerunner of the post-1964 national security state. Hilton shows how the 1935 communist revolt generated irresistible pressure for an authoritarian government to contain the Soviet threat; details the Brazilian government's secret cooperation with the Gestapo during the 1930s and its concomitant efforts to forge an anti-Soviet front in the Southern Cone; and uncovers Brazil's attempt to build counterintelligence capabilities in neighboring countries.

';Parker has used recently declassified American materials and interviews... to reconstruct the steps that led to the creation of Operation Brother Sam.' The American Historical Review When the Brazilian military overthrew President Joo Goulart in 1964, American diplomats characterized the coup as a ';100 percent Brazilian movement.' It has since become apparent, largely through government documents declassified during the course of research for this book, that the United States had an invisible but pervasive part in the coup. Relying principally on documents from the Johnson and Kennedy presidential libraries, Phyllis Parker unravels the events of the coup in fascinating detail. The evidence she presents is corroborated by interviews with key participants. US interference in the Goulart regime began when normal diplomatic pressure failed to produce the desired enthusiasm from him for the Alliance of Progress. Political and economic manipulations also proving ineffective, the United States stood ready to back a military takeover of Brazil's constitutional democracy. US operation ';Brother Sam' involved shipments of petroleum, a naval task force, and tons of arms and ammunition in preparation for intervention during the 1964 coup. When the Brazilian military gained control without calling on the ready assistance, U.S. policy makers immediately accorded recognition to the new government and set in motion plans for economic support.
Examines the emergence of Brazilian psychiatry during a period of national regeneration, demonstrating how sociopolitical negotiations can shape psychiatric professionalizationReasoning against Madness: Psychiatry and the State in Rio de Janeiro, 1830-1944 examines the emergence of Brazilian psychiatry, looking at how its practitioners fashioned themselves as the key architects in the project ofnational regeneration. The book's narrative involves a cast of varied characters in an unstable context: psychiatrists, Catholic representatives, spiritist leaders, state officials, and the mentally ill, all caught in the shiftinglandscape of modern state formation. Manuella Meyer investigates the key junctures at which psychiatrists sought to establish their authority and the ways in which their adversaries challenged this authority. These moments serve as productive points from which to explore the moral and political economies of mental health, demonstrating how sociopolitical negotiations shape psychiatric professionalization. Meyer argues that the gradual adoptionof punitive configurations of insanity helped sanction socioeconomic and political inequalities during a time of rapid socioeconomic, political, and cultural transformation. Manuella Meyer is Associate Professor of History at the University of Richmond.
