Making Sense of Japanese Grammar explains in a lively and highly informative manner basic principles that underlie a wide range of phenomena in Japanese. Students--irrespective of proficiency level and linguistic training--will find clarification on matters of grammar that often seem idiosyncratic and Japanese-specific, such as avoiding the use of certain pronouns, employing the same word order for questions, hidden subjects, polite and direct forms. Organized for easy access and readability, Making Sense of Japanese Grammar consists of short units, each focused on explaining a distinct problem and illustrated with a wealth of examples. To further enhance their usefulness, the units are cross-referenced and contain brief comprehension exercises to test and apply newly acquired knowledge. A glossary and keys to the exercises are at the back of the book. This volume may be used as a supplementary classroom reading or a helpful reference for students of all levels. Both students and instructors, even those trained in linguistics, will find its accessible explanations of grammatical concepts helpful. Grounded in sound scholarship and extensive teaching experience, Making Sense of Japanese Grammar brings a fresh and liberating perspective to the study of Japanese.

Researched and written by a professional linguist with decades of experience as a student of Japanese language, culture, and martial arts-including living and training in Japan for 10 years-"The Language of Aikido: A Practitioner's Guide to Japanese Characters and Terminology" was designed specifically for students and teachers of the Japanese martial art Aikido, but will also be of interest to Japanese language enthusiasts who practice other martial arts such as Karate, Judo, Jujutsu, Iaido, and Kendo.Translating martial arts terminology using a standard Japanese-to-English dictionary is potentially fraught with cultural and contextual errors due to the specialized way that such terminology is used in a Budo study. Even dojo glossaries, while more specifically directed at relevant connotations of such vocabulary, are sometimes lacking in depth and historical and linguist context. Without the combination of a background in the Japanese language coupled with a serious study of Budo, proper understanding of the richness and full meanings of these terms can prove difficult to the non-Japanese speaker. This book attempts to address this problem by introducing the reader to historical and deep contextual information, alternate understandings of terms through the minds of experts in other Japanese martial traditions, and multiple translations of particular kanji (characters). In addition to chapters on Japanese pronunciation and writing systems, this book contains countless entries related to Aikido's history, luminary figures, rank, customs and courtesies, training, equipment, fundamentals, techniques, higher concepts, relevant Japanese proverbs, as well as a sampling of translations of Doka (Songs of the Path) written by Aikido's founder, Ueshiba Morihei. It is, to the best of my knowledge, the single most complete work of its kind in existence in the English language. In the words of Ikeda Hiroshi, Aikikai Shihan 7th Dan and Boulder Aikikai Chief Instructor, "In the process of learning these arts, in addition to learning technical movement, understanding the Japanese language is important-starting with necessary words for use in the dojo including the names of techniques, etiquette-related phrases, practice terminology, and general martial arts vocabulary."

Enter a world of flying rabbits, blue traffic lights, spelling reforms, ancient alphabet songs, viking buffets, worthless theatre tickets, dragons emerging from the clouds, carefully-folded underpants, typhoons on pedestals, tetris blocks, men in the moon, huckster shrikes, and persimmon chips.Flying Rabbits and Blue Traffic Lights is a compendium of fascinating facts about the Japanese language, with plenty of weirdness and zero boredom.

Since it was first published in 1984, the focus of the Japanese for Busy People series has always been to teach Japanese for effective communication. The Kana Workbook teaches the two basic Japanese scripts, hiragana and katakana, which are essential for any student wishing to read Japanese. It teaches not only reading and writing of kana (as these scripts are collectively called), but also listening and pronunciation with the aid of audio recordings which can be downloaded for free from kodansha.us. Sections for practicing individual kana come with reference lines to help learners get a feel for the proper size and shape of each character. It also shows the stroke order, correct angles, and spaces between strokes, so that learners can master even confusingly similar-looking characters. There are also many illustrations which help learners to build their vocabularies.

**NOTE: This version of the book is black and white**The main goal of this book is to help those who are studying Japanese as a second language. For this reason, the book is centered on a specific Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) level. This first book, of the Japanese Kanji Mnemonics Series, focuses on the 361 Japanese characters (kanji) found on the N3 level test and it assumes the reader has knowledge of the two Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana). In order to start using this book, please follow the following steps: 1. FRONT PAGE:a. Flashcard Style: The book is recommended to be used as flashcards. Therefore, the student will find the kanji mnemonic on the front page and the kanji information on the other side.b. Mnemonic: The drawings have been made to match the characters' radicals, elements and history as much as possible. In the cases where this was not possible, I just tried to make it easy to remember. However, creativity from the reader is also highly encouraged. 2. BACK PAGE: a. Common Meaning(s): The student will find the meanings that are most appropriate for the N3 level.b. Sentence: A sentence to help remember the kanji better and that also creates a story that can be used as a mnemonic device. Each sentence was formed by breaking down the kanji into different elements for easy memorization.
