An old man-poet, playwright, essayist, and scholar-sifts through the broken fragments of his memory as he recounts what it was like to grow up in Warsaw during the German occupation of World War II. The result is Kinderszenen, a searing and controversial memoir by a major post-war Polish writer that has evoked both debate and praise, now translated into English for the first time. The book's title comes from the suite of piano pieces by Robert Schumann which evoke the innocence and joy of childhood-thus providing a wrenching counterpoint to the violence, destruction, and madness that characterize Jaros¿aw Marek Rymkiewicz's coming of age. While the scenes of his youth are depicted in vivid detail, from his boyish encounters with cats, horses, and turtles up to the shocking brutality of murder and mayhem witnessed at first hand, what really sets Kinderszenen apart is its extended meditation on the nature of war, oppression, and fanatical nationalism, and the possibility-however doomed it may seem-of human resistance to those forces. Here is an enduring testimony that remains starkly relevant to our own time.
On March 1, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled several new nuclear technologies in his annual address to Russia's Federal Assembly, including systems such as a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), nuclear-armed unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), and nuclear-powered cruise missile that would be the first such weapons deployed in the world.1 These systems, according to Putin, would ensure the invincibility of Russia's nuclear arsenal.During the speech, Putin played a video showing one of the new systems-the Sarmat ICBM striking targets in Florida, the home state of then-President Donald Trump.2 Four years later,Russia would use the conventional variant of one of their novel systems-the Kinzhal hypersonicaeroballistic missile-to strike an underground arms depot in Western Ukraine.3 The use of Kinzhal as part of Russia's war on Ukraine came after deploying it to Kaliningrad and Syria-placing it near the borders of multiple NATO members.4

"In 'Through the Pages of the History of the Catholic Clergy,' this book delves into a multitude of perspectives, revealing a Saint Mother Teresa who did not wear a burqa and was not Ottoman or Arab. It shows how Father Gjergj Fishta o.f.m. was a warm gospel of patriotism, even though the Albanians were between Western and Eastern Christianity. Here, it is told about the relocation of the fresco of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Genazzano, Italy; the unforgettable story of Father Anton Harapi O.F.M., martyr of religion and Albanianism; the story of the outstanding personality of little Don Anton Kçira, the family ordeal, as well as his 51-year priestly contribution; the arrest, investigation, shooting, martyrdom, and beatification of the last Abbot of Mirdita, Monsignor Frano Gjin; Mons. dr. Zef Oroshi as the last student of Saverian College in the city of Shkodra; Americans are inspired by the life and work of Mother Teresa; a belated memorial for the friend and scholar of Catholic culture and clergy Kolec Çefa; the outstanding writer of the tradition and the geg school of northern Albania, Msgr. Zef Simoni Ipeshkev; the life and a look at the book of rhymes and poems "Flowers and Blood" by Don Gjergj Simon; two brilliant Albanian-American dissident intellectuals: Prof. Arshi Pipa and Msgr. dr. Zef Oroshi; a life intercepted in the Dossier of the communist dictatorship against mons. dr. Zef Oroshi; Saint Mother Teresa's eight leadership principles in a new book by American co-authors Ruma Bose & Lou Faust: "Mother Teresa CEO"; a perspective on the outstanding researcher and publicist Msgr. dr. Lush Gjergji, the most prominent biographer of Saint Mother Teresa, on the 50th anniversary of his profession; a candle of light on the 121st anniversary of the birth of the first Albanian Cardinal Mikel Koliq as the first in the history of Christianity among Albanians; the writings or Prefaces written by Ndriçim Mlika and Dr. Fran Luli, for other historical books by the author of this book, Klajd Kapinova, etc."
Zvi Helmut Steinitz Memoirs for eternal remembranceFor years I was preoccupied with the thought of documenting the tragic fate of my family members, all of them perished in the Holocaust. Yet for almost my whole life, I tried to suppress the sorrowful past, wary of resurrecting the years of tears and suffering. I rarely spoke of the wartime atrocities. I never returned to the country where death resided, where streams of Jewish blood saturated the earth. I couldn¿t bring myself to stand before the silent mass grave in Belzec, where my parents, my brother and my aunt lie buried together with hundreds upon thousands of Jewish victims. I couldn¿t face the death of those I loved, couldn't look into their eyes. In my mind, they live on. Many years later, vivid images from the monstrous war years began to appear frequently, images that cast a shadow over my day-to-day life and burdened my mind. I gradually became aware of my age, too. I was no longer young, and already I felt under pressure to finally write down the story of my family. All my life I had been haunted by the question of how I had survived the war, where I had drawn the mental and physical strength that helped me to survive those tortuous years. There is no explanation for my survival, and yet I am certain that the upbringing that my parents gave me had a significant influence on my steadfastness and determination, particularly in critical situations. My parents brought my brother and me up with love and human values that I have carried with me through my life. In moments of deepest despair and deadly peril, hidden strengths awakened in me, strengths that sharpened my senses and saved my life. I strongly believe that the values installed in childhood will always stay with a person and develop into principles that a young person can take into independent life. Had I not possessed these principles, not even blind luck or sheer coincidence could have saved me. As the only surviving member of my family, I felt a moral obligation to immortalise in writing the fate of my family and their lives before and during the war up until their tragic deaths. I had the extraordinary fortune of surviving, and I have enough mental strength today to enable me to address the horrors of that time and to tell the story of my family. The Nazis will not succeed in their appalling attempt at erasing my family's existence from this earth. My parents and brother have no personal graves and no gravestone.

This is a unique record of a unique journey - of two brave clowns who travel into a warzone. The reader is transported through the magical metaphor of space travel, into the poetic and playful imagination of the clowns. They attempt to offer mutual aid and humanity to a nation (Ukraine) that is being systematically dehumanized by its oppressor (Russia). As we enter the warzone with the clowns, we see it, not as darkness and horror, but through a lens of imagination, colour, and hope. This book speaks to trauma and the different and complex ways that we experience it. We see how human contact, facilitated by clowns, helps people to deal with this trauma and to overcome it. The reader is invited inside these experiences, living them through the clown's playful and poetic perspective. The Pretzels Space Odyssey gives a deep and fascinating insight into the practice of healthcare clowning, the skills, techniques, and state of being required to bring humanistic values into institutional systems that prize efficiency and order above all else. It gives insights into how healthcare clowns empower, validate, and celebrate the people they meet through play, imagination, and presence.
At 3.00 a.m. on 18th July, 2014, Mal Garrett and his wife Liz were awakened in Paris by a phone call with the sort of news no one ever wishes to receive: Liz's sister Jill and Jill's husband Roger, from whom they had parted only two days before after a delightful river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam, had been on their way home to Australia on flight MH17, when it was blasted out of the skies over Ukraine. In the days, months, and years ahead, Mal found solace in expressing his pain in poetry. As a former English teacher and author of English textbooks, this was a natural medium for him. Having found his poetic voice, Mal has continued to write poems, both in response to loss but also to capture joy and to reflect on current issues. A particular joy has been that of being a grandparent. Mal is dedicating any income made from the sales of this anthology to assisting the people of Ukraine.

Honors the Summers' discoveries at Kerkenes Dağı, offering new insights and discussions on Anatolia's cultural history between 700 and 550 BC.The period of Anatolian history between the death of the semi-legendary king Midas of Gordion ca. 700 BC and the advent of the Achaemenid Persian Empire ca. 550 BC is dominated by certain narratives: the rise of the Mermnad Lydian Kingdom, from Gyges to Croesus; the demise of the Urartian Kingdom and 'Neo-Hittite'-type culture and polities; and the invasion of shadowy forces from the Steppe: Cimmerians, Scythians and Medes. The discoveries of Geoffrey and Francoise Summers's project at the massive walled city on Kerkenes Dağı have changed the cultural history and texture of Anatolia during this time period, opening up insights into the spread of Phrygian culture and language and inviting further discussion of how the period is framed. This book honors their accomplishments by presenting papers addressing the dynamics and events of that period from various angles, and in various regions and places, as well as other interventions on Iron Age Anatolia, from dating of kings to rare and potentially influential medical techniques. The volume sheds light on and also advocates for further synthesis of the regional dynamics affecting the Mediterranean, Near East and Anatolia together, toward the production of revised, more nuanced narratives.
