"The Islamic Welfare State explains the relationship between government legitimacy, everyday security, and lived Islam in Pakistan-a major Muslim-majority country. Its humanitarian spirit makes Islam a compelling, community-strengthening faith that motivates people to provide essential services to the needy, to foster moral sentiments that build social solidarity, and to thereby challenge the legitimacy of government with its focus on 'protecting Islam' and 'national security' rather than enhancing the lives of ordinary people. The book surveys four kinds of Islamic charities-traditional, professional, partisan, and state. The focus is on ground realities, on the activities of welfare workers and beneficiaries, mostly patients and students from low-income families. The attention to the different political sentiments that different kinds of charity foster allows us to better understand politics and political change in Pakistan and across the Muslim world"--

Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, The University of Kashmir, language: English, abstract: Gurez, a high-altitude valley in North Kashmir¿s Bandipora District is home to 25,000 Dards, who are part of a wider group of Dardic-Shina speaking people spread across the Northern areas of Pakistan and Ladakh as well as parts of Afghanistan. Dard Shin or Dard tribe once had their homeland spread across the valleys, tucked inside the great Himalayas at the edge of north Kashmir from Chitral and Yasin, across the Indus regions of Gilgit, Chilas and Bunji to Gurez valley. Gurez valley is an isolated because of harsh weather area witness during winter season and its location between Indo-Pak Border. The valley is hotspot witnessing frequent shelling, that erupts between the two South Asian neighbors has not only made this beautiful valley largely inaccessible to people from wider society, but also to the Dard Shin villagers who have had to flee their homes on the many occasions when hostilities between India and Pakistan amply. The tribal identity of Dards across Gurez was caught in the pandemonium following the emergence of India and Pakistan as Nation states in 1947. People are trapped in the vicious circle of various sensitive factors such as inaccessibility, marginality of resources, fragility, poor carrying capacity, vulnerability of non-farm employment, un-explored niches, out-migration and erosion of Dard tribe due to displacement etc. The Dard-Shins are believed to be the descendants of the early Aryan settlers who arrived more than two thousand years ago. References to them can be traced back to the writings of Herodotus. The onslaught of modernization and the partition that divided the Dard Shin homeland by a hostile Line of Control between India and Pakistan, Once the gateway to Central Asia, Gurez Valley inhabited by Dard-shin speaking people in a forgotten corner of Kashmir is still home to the Dard people. This tribe squeezed to the remote and hidden Gurez valley in north Kashmir struggling to save their vanishing Shina language, their culture, traditions and a distinct identity. The paper therefore aims to highlight the repercussion of aftermath partition and identity erosion of Dard tribe of Gurez valley Kashmir.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 3.25/4.00, University of the Punjab (UNIVERSITY OF THE PUNJAB LAHORE PAKISTAN - DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS), course: DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS, language: English, abstract: This purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between industrial development and poverty reduction in case of Pakistan. The data is taken from 1975 to 2010. It takes the hypothesis that industrial development will decrease poverty through increased employment and rise in the per capita income. All the variables used in the model are stationary at 1st difference. I have employed ARDL approach to Co-integration to find relationship between industrial development and poverty reduction. The approach and findings of the study are compared with that of regional and East Asian countries, which have developed through industrialization. The t-values for LINDG is highest among the independent variables, which means growth in industry can reduce the poverty to greater extent. The population growth of Pakistan is quite high, by increasing the literacy rate; we can make the labor skilled, increasing human capital, that will lead to more jobs and earning opportunities, reducing poverty.

The first dedicated examination of Alexander the Great's final battle and acknowledged tactical masterpiece. In the years that followed Alexander the Great's victory at Gaugamela on 1 October 331 BC, his Macedonian and Greek army fought a truly 'Herculean' series of campaigns in what is today Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. But it was in the Indus Valley, on the banks of the Hydaspes River (known today as the Jhelum) in 326 BC that Alexander would fight his last major battle against King Poros. Using detailed maps and 3D diagrams, this beautifully illustrated work shows how Alexander used feints and deception to transport a select force from his army across the swollen River Hydaspes without attracting the enemy's attention, allowing his troops the crucial element of surprise. Battlescene artworks and photographs reveal the fascinating array of forces that clashed in the battle, including Indian war elephants and chariots, and horse archers and phalanx formations. Also examined are the differences in weaponry and armour between the opposing sides, which would prove crucial to the outcome. Although a tactical masterpiece, the Hydaspes was the closest that Alexander the Great came to defeat, and was one of the costliest battles fought by his near-exhausted army.
