Amidst the turmoil of World War II, Zurich was an enclave where modern art held its ground. In the aftermath, Concrete Art, design, and the "Swiss Style" became emblematic of a modern Switzerland. Influenced by De Stijl, Russian Constructivism, and the Bauhaus, the Zurich Concretists aimed to transform society through aesthetics, design, and architecture. Circle! Square! Progress! brings together the main protagonists Max Bill, Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg, and Richard Paul Lohse along with precursors such as Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Georges Vantongerloo, Theo van Doesburg, and Anton Stankowski. Contemporary witnesses, artist Peter Fischli and curator Bice Curiger, add their unique perspectives. The volume vividly describes the Zurich Concretist's conections with European avant-garde, delving into the hostilities, scandals, and their ultimately successful struggle for recognition against the backdrop of the 20th century's upheavals.
Edition VFO, Verein für Originalgraphik (Association for Original Prints) was established in 1948 to pursue the goals of publishing contemporary art and making collecting affordable to broader audiences. The Zurich-based, much-recognized non-profit institution remains committed to the dissemination of contemporary art, and is now the largest of the few remaining publishers of original printed editions in Switzerland. Print Art Now marks Edition VFO's 75th anniversary. It brings together three exhibitions in Switzerland, at the Musée Jenisch in Vevey, the Museo Civico Villa dei Cedri in Bellinzona, and the Kunsthaus Grenchen, all curated on the occasion of the jubilee. They respectively explore the topics of collecting prints today, the technical and artistic challenges of printmaking, and the emancipation of print as a medium within the traditional hierarchy of visual art. The featured artworks demonstrate how print is constantly evolving as an artistic technique and has become equal to painting, photography, sculpture, or video. The beautiful volume also offers an up-to-date survey of printmaking in Switzerland and highlights its relevance in contemporary art practice.
Whether Old Masters or young Swiss art, whether printed or drawn: with holdings of more than 160,000 works on paper, the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich, the famous university's collection of prints and drawings, is one of the largest and finest of its kind in Switzerland and internationally. Albrecht Dürer, Maria Sibylla Merian, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Pablo Picasso are represented alongside contemporary greats such as Louise Bourgeois, Miriam Cahn, Fischli/Weiss, Urs Lüthi, and Shirana Shahbazi. Founded in 1867 as a classical academic study collection, the archive serves today as a focal point for scholars and art-lovers alike, and as the means for exchange between the university and the public. This lavishly illustrated book takes readers on a fascinating journey across six centuries of art history, featuring some 300 of the collection's highlights. An introductory essay on the history and evolution of the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich and brief texts on 40 selected works accompany the illustrations. The volume is rounded off by personal statements by contemporary artists and researchers from various disciplines, who testify to and comment on the significance and topicality of the collection's holdings.
FERROZINE 536 presents twelve projects by the artist Ottjörg A.C. from the last 20 years. Ottjörg has lived in many different countries for long periods of time - among these, in Germany, Austria and Russia, later repeatedly in China, and for several years in Brazil. His artwork originates from all over the world, inter alia color imprints of scribbled school desks from five continents. Ottjörg combines the analogue experience of traces and testimonies of the past with printing processes. His most important tool is communication. By printing on site - wherever a press can be found - participation and exchange with people of diverse heritages is extended to the technical production of the artwork. Where is the connection between the Pampas of Latin America and the foundation piles of Berlin's Imperial Palace? How is it possible to mention Albrecht Dürer and Kasimir Malevich in one breath? What does horse castration have to do with colonial rule? How can worthless banknotes be profitably recycled? This publication has some ideas to offer.

The artist book "Marcel van Eeden - 1898" is being published to coincide with the Hans-Thoma Prize 2023. The prize-winner, Marcel van Eeden (* 1965), explores Thoma's little-known travels to the Netherlands in 1898. He reflects on Thoma's analysis of Rembrandt van Rijn or Paulus Potter, under the problematic influence of cultural theorist Julius Langbehn. Present-day gum bichromate images of the places Thoma visited alongside historical quotes by Thoma and Langbehn result in a multifaceted, critical consideration of nationalistic views on culture.
In the second half of the twentieth century, they amassed one of the most important and comprehensive collections of art: Irene and Peter Ludwig. Driven by the idea of putting a panorama of global art on display, from 1970 onwards they were instrumental in the establishment of museums and foundations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Russia, Cuba, and China. In interviews with Regina Wyrwoll, fourteen of their contemporaries tell the stories behind the Ludwigs' global activities. Introductory texts offering contextual information, documents and photographs from the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation archive-some published for the first time-and a timeline of their founding of institutions complete the publication.Text: Regina Wyrwoll
The Austrian typographer Helmut Schmid was a master of his craft. He put his own spin on Emil Ruder's teachings at the Basel School of Design while remaining faithful to the principles of clarity, simplicity and elegance. Blending eastern and western influences, Schmid honed his skills and put them into practice in the fields of editorial design, packaging of ethical drugs and visual identity of brands such as Pocari Sweat sports drink (Otsuka Pharmaceutical), Maquillage (Shiseido) and IPSA. He also produced independent publications in parallel, such as Typographic Reflections.Helmut Schmid Typography explores the typographer's oeuvre in its entirety. The book's generous design allows each image to breathe, and the accompanying texts narrate Schmid's life and career in an informative and pleasant manner. Complementing the publications Weingart: Typography and Ruder Typography, Ruder Philosophy, this bilingual monograph completes the Basel school of typographic thought.
Bodies act as powerful signs, as cultural settings: How are bodies represented and how are they looked at? Which types of bodies are never shown or only shown in a particular way or context? Normative ideas of beauty and the body shape our perception of ourselves and the world - and the bodies shown manifest inequalities and reflect the prevailing relations of power and violence.Talking Bodies questions the body images propagated by our visual culture through the medium of the poster. Masterpieces of art history, contemporary self-dramatizations in social media, gender stereotypes, images of black bodies, and the representation of disabled and non-normative bodies are juxtaposed and critically analyzed. With its focus on the construction and impact of body images, but also on possible strategies of resistance, the publication sees itself as a critical contribution to current debates.

"The Folly Cove Designers (officially 1941-1969) was a grassroots collective of predominantly women block printers founded by Caldecott Award-winner and beloved children's book author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios (of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel fame). This trailblazing Gloucester, Massachusetts-based group produced more than three hundred distinct designs, which they block printed on fabric. The designs conveyed personal and regional narratives through the use of shared design principles and the compelling language of pattern. The group was propelled to international fame through commercial contracts with major retailers (F. Schumacher, Lord & Taylor, etc.), articles in leading periodicals such as Life, and participation in seminal fine craft exhibitions. Their work continues to inspire contemporary printmakers around the globe, particularly women printmakers. As the first comprehensive history of the Folly Cove Designers, Trailblazing Women Printmakers documents and celebrates the group's tremendous success and the incredible artistry of its members."
This publication is devoted to an extensive description of the pneumopteria which are also referred to as cloud whales or cloud sponges, and occasionally, in scientific language, as pneumospongia. Often, in older treatises, they have been termed celestial leviathans. These gigantic, cloud-like creatures, which seemed to float in the air without movement or stimulation, could reach several hundred meters in size. In all likelihood, they are extinct today. The species was, however, frequently observed in historical times and has been described by numerous cultures and in many different contexts. With his research findings, Roland Boden provides the first thorough introduction to the nature, appearance, and behavior of the pneumopteria and surveys the history of their exploration and description. In his treatise, defined as fictional research, Boden uses quotations, photographs, reproductions, reconstructive drawings, and computer-generated images, combining real scientific and historical facts with completely fictitious elements to create a parallel reality that cleverly and artistically questions contemporary perceptual processes.

Der Kisokaido durch Japan wurde Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts vom damaligen Herrscher Tokugawa Ieyasu angelegt.
