2024 NEW YORK TIMES HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE PICKThe late hip-hop pioneer, seminal graffiti writer, and iconoclast contemporary artist Rammellzee—a legend in his own time to his peers—was a profoundly transformative and influential figure across the art, graffiti, and music worlds.Rammellzee was an enigmatic yet key figure in the nexus of creative forces that defined New York City’s heady downtown scene in the late 1970s and 1980s. In the first major monograph on the multi-hyphenate artist, his inspired vision and wildly diverse artistic output are considered in depth. The oversize volume presents a treasure trove of material, providing extraordinary insight into his creative genius: a comprehensive selection of artworks (his iconic resin frescoes, paintings, sculpture, and performance paraphernalia), never-before-seen documentation of his graffiti work and performances, archival material, and ephemera. Gathered here for the first time, these materials tell this complex artist’s origin story and details his artistic evolution, cementing Rammellzee’s place in the art historical canon.Maxwell Wolf, lead curator of the much-lauded retrospective in 2018 on which this book is largely based, and co-editor Jeff Mao convene a historic gathering of the key actors of the time to tell Rammellzee’s extraordinary story in their own words in an extensive oral history. From graffiti writers, artists, musicians, and actors to filmmakers, photographers, gallerists, and family, those close to the late artist—including Toxic, Futura, Lee Quiñones, Charlie Ahearn, Jim Jarmusch, and Henry Chalfant—provide critical context about his life and work. This richly layered volume is a must-have for the legions of Rammellzee fans, as well as enthusiasts of contemporary underground art and culture, “old” New York, graffiti, and the history of hip-hop. Published in association with the Estate of Rammellzee. Major support for the publication provided by Jeffrey Deitch.

The second part of history and meanings of tattoo motifs. Each group, clan, or community that practiced tattooing had its own places where people prepared for tattooing or where tattooing was performed. Tattoo sessions were accompanied by music, songs, or other rituals. They had tattoo artists and their assistants. Of course, they used various tattoo tools to carry and apply the designs. Last but not least, they also used different ingredients to obtain the inks for the tattoos. For all this, the different communities had their own names and terms, in their own language or dialect, and it is these terms, including descriptions, often already lost in history, that this book presents.
This book celebrates and seeks to understand the overlooked appearances of hybrid forms in visual culture; artefacts and practices that meld or interweave incongruous elements in innovative ways. And with an emphasis on the material aspects of such entities, the book adopts the term 'mixed form' for them.Focusing on key phenomena in the last half millennium such as the cabinet of curiosities, the broadside ballad and the chapbook as early forms of image-text, the scrapbook, assemblage, and, in digital times, so-called 'mixed reality,' the book argues that while the quality of inconsistency is traditionally dismissed, its expression nevertheless plays a vital role in social life.Crucially, Mixed Forms of Visual Culture relates its phenomena to the emergence of the division of labour under capitalism and addresses the shifting relationships between art and life, when singularity and uniformity are variously valued and dismissed in the two arenas, and at different points in history. Two of the book's chapters take the form of visual essays, with one comprising an anthology of found scrapbook pages and the other offering an analysis of artists' scrapbooks. The book is richly illustrated throughout.

HÅNDVÆRK bookazine no. 7 invites you on a visit to an architect, a design firm, a blacksmith, a brazier, a bricklayer, a carpenter and a thatcher, among others, and shows you how bathroom tiles can be made with a high content of crushed discarded bricks. You can learn about painting with egg-oil tempera and get updated on textiles, glass, ceramic, food and drink. From editors’ letter by Rigetta Klint:‘Perhaps you might like to scale up in a future issue of HÅNDVÆRK?’ asked an architect who attended a talk I gave a few months ago about my work on the HÅNDVÆRK bookazine. She added, ‘As I’m sure you know, climate accounts are going to be mandatory in construction from 2023. Initially, there will be a cap on CO2 emissions per square metre per year for new builds over 1,000 m2, and from 2025, the requirement is going to apply to all new construction.’Indeed, I had heard about it, and yes, I was interested in scaling up and taking a look at architecture and construction; in fact, I had already begun. At this point in the process, it was quite clear to me that there are many interests at play in construction, refurbishment and renovation and that dealing with architecture and construction is about much more than just scaling up. Above all, construction is big business – and a huge factor in relation to the above-mentioned and increasingly ubiquitous climate accounts. Where there is a will there is a way, and not just when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint. In my interviews we take a broad look at materials, aesthetics, working processes, working life experiences, lived life experience and education. Ausstellung:Deichtorhallen Hamburg, 28/10/2022 - 14/3/2023KünstlerInnen:Bani Abidi, Sarah Abu Abdallah, Etel Adnan, Latif Al Ani, Khadim Ali, Halil Altindere, Minam Apang, Rasheed Araeen, Thuraya Al Baqsami, Shiraz Bayjoo, Semiha Berksoy, Huma Bhabha, Huguette Caland, CAMP, Tony Chakar, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Tiffany Chung, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Simone Fattal, Marcos Grigorian, Abbas Habiballa, Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, Rokni Haerizadeh, Taloi Havini, Susan Hefuna, Adam Henein, Lubaina Himid, Emily Jacir, Hayv Kahraman, Ali Kazim, Amal Kenawy, Aisha Khalid, Anuar Khalifi, David Koloane, Farideh Lashai, Tala Madani, Taus Makhacheva, Jumana Manna, Marwan, Ibrahim Massouda, Ahmed Mater, Ahmed Morsi, Fateh Moudarres, Michael Rakowitz, Marwan Rechmaoui, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Mohan Samant, Hrair Sarkissian, Hassan Sharif, Wael Shawky, Anwar Jalal Shemza, Ahmed Shibrain, Shahzia Sikander, Rayyane Tabet, Richard Lokiden Wani, Nari Ward, Lionel Wendt, Kamal Youssef, Akram Zaatari
Interviews with 15 tattoo and body modification artists. Modern Primitives examines a vivid contemporary enigma: the growing revival of highly visual (and sometimes shocking) "primitive" body modification practices - tattooing, multiple piercing, and scarification.
The publication closely follows the process of the artist Joan Jonas in developing the multiformat project Moving Off the Land. It is Jonas's most recent body of work and encompasses three years of research into the significance of the ocean throughout history as a totemic, spiritual, and cultural reference. This monograph provides an access to the complete script for the performance, along with annotations, accompanied by images of Jonas's live performance as well as a complete chronology with visuals of the performance's history. Text: Ute Meta Bauer, Stefanie Hessler, Joan Jonas, Markus Reymann, Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza.

A beautifully written memoir that explores the life of a tattoo artist and what tattooing and art mean in our lives.
Painting, photography, film: A one-woman-production, Patricia Reinhart's artistic work presents itself as multilayered, sensual and poetic. Her art explores femininity as the mystery of being, regarding the self in a simultaneously exploratory, deconstructive and authentic way. In the medium of Ciné Collage, the artist interweaves literature, psychoanalysis, film and art history to create surreal-theatrical tableaus that use subtly-chosen narratives to subvert commonly accepted regimes of power and gaze. In painting, inner and outer abstract spaces touch to form color orgies that depict the universe as an interplay of an infinite number of elementary particles. Patricia Reinhart staging a self-portrait in a photo booth in a public area in Paris, selecting gestures and poses that call her own female identity into question. Oscillating between appropriation and dissolution of the history of visual media and literary models, Patricia Reinhart expands her own analyses, observations, and conceptions of the world in interrelated visual media. This monographic publication includes works from 2015 to 2022 by the artist, who resides in both Paris and Vienna.
